Chapter 229: The First Gathering of the Study Group - Part 2
Chapter 229: The First Gathering of the Study Group - Part 2
Clap, clap, clap. Autumn led the applause, and soon everyone in the classroom joined in, showing their agreement.
Liam pressed his hands down, and the room fell silent, waiting for him to speak.
"Since everyone agrees to learn some real skills here, I'll explain my plan. To make our study sessions effective, we should meet at least once a week. We'll set it for every Sunday afternoon."
"So, what exactly will we be learning?" Justin raised his hand and asked.
"We'll use the textbooks and the School's curriculum as a guide, and then delve deeper into the subjects."
"Delve deeper? What does that mean?" Justin asked, looking a bit puzzled.
"Right, it's hard to explain, so Hermione and I will demonstrate. Please move to the side of the classroom to give us some space for the demonstration."
Everyone quickly used their wands to move the desks and chairs against the walls, then watched as Liam and Hermione each stood at opposite ends of the classroom, wands in hand.
After a nod to each other, they began.
Hermione, having been reading Nymph's Transfiguration books recently, chose Transfiguration for her first attack. She transformed the desk behind her into seven or eight wooden spears, which flew toward Liam.
Liam dodged most of the spears, then used an Armor Charm to deflect the one that got past him.
But Hermione's attack wasn't over. With a whispered spell, the spears that had fallen to the ground turned into a vine that lunged at Liam.
Liam calmly waved his wand, and the control of the vine shifted to him. Under his command, the vine transformed into countless wooden needles, which flew toward Hermione, gradually turning metallic as they flew.
Hermione, seeing the danger, quickly switched her half-prepared attack to a defensive spell, blocking the needles. Liam took advantage of this to cast several spells in quick succession, breaking through Hermione's defenses.
Just as he was about to defeat Hermione, a burst of light from her wand temporarily blinded him. She used this opportunity to narrowly escape Liam's attack, though she looked a bit flustered.
However, once she lost the upper hand, the situation grew increasingly unfavorable for Hermione. Soon, Liam ended the battle with a Disarming Charm.
After tidying up the classroom with his wand, Liam looked at the stunned students and asked, "Any questions?"
"That was amazing! I finally understand how you earned the Order of Merlin Medal. The battle with those Dark Wizards must have been intense, right?" Alicia asked, her face full of admiration.
"Not really. We just used some traps that were already in place", Hermione said modestly.
"You seemed to be using very simple magic, didn't you?" Fred asked, suddenly realizing something.
"That's right. All the magic we used was the simplest kind, including Transfiguration, spells, and Dark Arts Defense. This is what we mean by delving deeper into the textbook content", Liam nodded.
"But it looks very different from what we learn in class", George added.
"In fact, all the spells we demonstrated today come from our classes. For example, transforming a desk into wooden spears, then into toothpicks, and finally into needles is standard Transfiguration content. Making them fly is part of Charms. The Disarming Charm and Iron Armor are from Dark Arts Defense."
"But, but this is completely different from what we learned in class", Hannah Abbott stammered.
"Magic can be used in many flexible ways, even though there are many types of it. We should adapt Magic to our needs, rather than rigidly following certain rules. Hermione and I organized this Study Group to help everyone truly grasp the knowledge of Magic by sharing our research. For now, we are sharing our findings, but in the future, everyone will need to participate."
"What you're doing is really—very generous. We start to admire you", the Weasley Twins whispered as they squeezed in, knowing that sharing knowledge with others in the European Magic community, which values secrecy, was a significant gesture.
"If everyone keeps their knowledge to themselves, Wizards will find it hard to progress. Someone has to change this unfavorable situation. Now, as students, we have enough time to start sharing the simplest knowledge. If we keep this up, we can eventually change the world", Hermione added, joining the conversation.
"Alright, I think this is very difficult", Fred said.
"But we believe it's the right thing to do, so we are willing to share a few of our own discoveries in future sessions", George followed up.
This was a good start, Liam thought, a smile spreading across his face.
Seeing that everyone approved of the Study Group, Hermione stepped up to the podium and proposed, "Liam Liang, a recipient of the Second-Class Order of Merlin, was the main fighter in that adventure. So I propose that he lead us. Does everyone agree?"
After watching the two of them demonstrate their combat skills, no one objected to the proposal. After all, as Liam had mentioned, the Magic world was a place where the strong were respected, and the demonstration had clearly shown Liam's strength.
"Thank you for your trust", Liam said, bowing gracefully. His Oriental-style humility and politeness earned him even more enthusiastic applause from the class.
Once the applause died down, Hermione stepped up and said seriously, "I will assist Liam, handling external communications and organizational tasks. The Study Group is a place for learning, so everyone should take it seriously. If you can't attend due to special circumstances, you must inform me in advance. If you fail to notify me and miss three sessions, you will be considered to have withdrawn automatically."
Everyone's expressions turned serious at Hermione's stern tone, but no one objected.
For the rest of the time, Hermione and Liam explained how the Lumos spell could be broken down and modified using ancient runes. By the end of the gathering at nine o'clock, the Weasley Twins, who were quick learners, had already started modifying Lumos, while even the slowest learner, Neville, had understood the spell's mechanics thanks to Liam's explanations. In short, everyone had learned something.
After agreeing to start the first session next Sunday, everyone headed back to their respective houses. Each person left with high spirits, looking forward to the next training session.
"At least it's a good start, isn't it?" Hermione said to Liam as they walked back to the Gryffindor Tower.
"Indeed, today was a good start", Liam nodded in agreement.
