Chapter 228: The Eye of the Star
Chapter 228: The Eye of the Star
October 12, 2024
Year 1345 of the Starlight Calendar, Month of Blazing Fire (July).
The Starlight Academy's teleportation plaza was bustling with activity. Over a dozen teleportation arrays were arranged in a circle at the center of the square. People were constantly arriving and departing through these arrays.
At the edge of the plaza, Dornohan kept his eyes fixed on the teleportation arrays, occasionally glancing at his pocket watch.
After about five minutes, his eyes suddenly lit up, and he waved at someone emerging from one of the arrays.
"Fleming, over here!"
A few nearby students were drawn by Dornohan's voice and followed his gaze. They noticed the gray robe with a badge indicating a third-level wizard apprentice and their expressions turned serious.
"Third-level wizard apprentice, which course's instructor?"
"A third-level apprentice isn't necessarily a teacher; they could also be a Star Alliance official."
"Hold on, this person looks familiar. I remember now, it's Fleming, the one who ascended to third-level apprentice just after Mentors Xeman and Cole!"
"Ah, it's him!"
Amidst the admiring gazes of the students, Fleming crossed the plaza and joined Dornohan.
Dornohan teased, "You're quite the celebrity at the academy now."
Fleming chuckled, "If we're talking about fame, Mentors Xeman and Cole are the real stars. I'm just the third, and not many remember that."
"Cut it out, being third is enough, I don't even have a rank," Dornohan said with a shrug.
Fleming laughed, "Well, I'm about to advance, right?"
"Almost there. In a couple of years, I should break through."
"Have you decided where you're going yet?"
"I don't have much choice; I'll have to join the Star Alliance."
As the number of third-level wizard apprentices increased, the academy's faculty became oversaturated, and the standards for becoming an instructor rose. Now, a third-level apprentice had to construct at least twelve star rings or make significant contributions in one of the following fields: potion-making, puppeteering, magic item crafting, or biological modification, and pass the exams to qualify as an instructor.
The rest of the third-level apprentices either continued as students or joined the Star Alliance. The latter, while having to fulfill certain duties, received generous monthly stipends, making it an attractive option for many.
Fleming was no exception. However, he would be able to construct his twelfth star ring next year and apply for the instructor exams. The benefits for instructors at the Starlight Academy were far more generous than those for ordinary Star Alliance officials.
After catching up for a bit, they decided to head to the cafeteria for lunch. As the number of students increased, the academy had built several more dining halls. Fleming and Dornohan chose the second cafeteria, where they had eaten their first meal upon entering the academy.
The prices of the recommended menu items, which once seemed exorbitant, were now negligible to Fleming. They ordered a few dishes, and the water sprite quickly brought the food to the table.
Noticing Fleming's disinterest in the water sprite, Dornohan teased, "You must be spending a lot of time with the water sprites hiding in your mansion, huh? Are you getting tired of them?"
Fleming rolled his eyes, "I've been busy with the task of opening a secondary magic stone vein. I've been so swamped that I haven't been back to the city manor for half a year."
Dornohan, curious, asked, "I heard this is a large secondary magic stone vein?"
"That's right, and it's led by Senior Attila."
"Senior Attila," Dornohan said with undisguised envy. "She's got it good, serving as Assistant to Lord Starfall. I heard even Carolina and the Red Widow respect her greatly."
Fleming smiled, "Senior Attila is a student the teacher truly recognizes. Even without her role as an assistant, The two wouldn't dare treat her with anything less than respect."
"But that's different. How many in the entire Star Alliance have a higher status than Senior Attila?"
Dornohan took a bite of fish, chewed, and swallowed.
"I'm actually quite puzzled. So many people took the exams, why did Lord Starfall choose Senior Attila?"
"Others are one thing, but Mentors Xeman and Yisan were also among the participants."
Fleming hesitated, then whispered, "I heard that Lord Starfall is a woman, which is why she chose Senior Attila as her assistant."
Dornohan was taken aback, "Really?"
“Just a rumor, I’m not sure if it’s true or not,” Fleming shrugged. “After all, apart from the top few, no one has ever seen Lord Starfall’s true face.”
“Then where did this rumor come from?”
“It’s said that Lord Amy mentioned it.”
Donohue suddenly understood.
If there was anyone in the entire Star Alliance who had no power but was respected so much that no one dared to provoke them, it was Lord Amy.
Lord Amy’s background was a mystery, and he seemed to appear and disappear at will. Although he wasn’t Lord Su Nan’s magical pet, he was deeply cared for and protected by Lord Su Nan, holding a transcendent position in the Star Alliance.
Moreover, it was said that Lord Amy was extremely knowledgeable, possessing a wealth of information and knowledge about the wizarding world. Even the mentors sometimes sought his advice.
He was also well-informed about many matters within the Star Alliance.
If Lord Amy said it, then it was likely to be true.
After chatting about the gossip for a while, the two of them turned the conversation to the academy.
“Has anything interesting happened at the academy recently?” Fleming asked casually.
“What could be interesting at the academy?”
Midway through his sentence, Donohue seemed to remember something and changed his tone.
“Well, if you want something interesting, there is one thing.”
“What?”
“The academy recently installed a new magical device. It’s said to have come from the Star Alliance and can monitor the energy particle fluctuations throughout the entire academy. If anyone uses magic outside the spell practice and experiment zones, it will immediately detect it and issue a warning.”
“Last month, two students were caught dueling in secret. Not only did they lose a large amount of contribution points, but they’re still in detention.”
Fleming looked surprised. “There’s a magical device like that?”
“Why would I lie to you? The thing is in the monitoring room, and it’s called the Eye of the Stars.”
Seeing Fleming’s curious expression, Donohue smiled and said, “This month, the monitoring room is staffed by Mentor Innocent. I remember he admires you a lot. If you’re curious, you could ask him to let you see the Eye of the Stars.”
Fleming’s heart raced. He specialized in the field of magical item creation, and a device as intriguing as this was impossible not to be curious about.
But he quickly caught on and gave Donohue a sidelong glance, a half-smile playing on his lips.
“I think you’re the one who’s more curious. Otherwise, why would you keep urging me to find Mentor Innocent?”
“Ha, I knew I couldn’t fool you.”
Donohue didn’t seem embarrassed at being caught. He chuckled and said, “But you’re curious too, right? What do you say, are you in?”
Fleming hesitated for a moment, but he couldn’t resist his curiosity and nodded firmly.
“Alright, let’s go find Mentor Innocent.”
With that decision made, the two of them rushed to the monitoring room without even finishing their meal.
The monitoring room was located in the center of the academy, a white high-rise building.
Beside it stood a squad of elite Dual-Blade Spider Flagships (100 heads). If any rule violations were detected in the academy, a Dual-Blade Spider squad would immediately rush to the scene to stop and apprehend the offenders.
A squad of five legendary-level elite Dual-Blade Spiders was more than enough to subdue any student in the academy, except for the mentors.
After passing the inspection by the steel golems guarding the entrance, Fleming and Donohue entered the building.
As soon as they stepped into the hall, they saw a giant crystal orb in the center.
The orb was about the height of a person, oval-shaped with slightly pointed ends, resembling a crystal eye.
Inside the ‘eye’ was a vivid three-dimensional panoramic model.
Fleming recognized it at a glance—it was a panoramic map of the Starlight Academy.
What surprised him was the numerous small green, yellow, and blue dots, numbering in the thousands.
Fleming was about to step closer to take a better look when a staff member stopped him.
“Are you here to use the Eye of the Stars? Do you have a usage permit?”
Fleming was taken aback, but Donohue quickly explained, “Some tasks require the use of the Eye of the Stars. Those who accept such tasks are given temporary permission to use it.”
After explaining, Donohue turned to the staff member and said, “We’re here to see Mentor Innocent.”
The staff member was about to speak when a voice suddenly sounded in his ear.
“You can go. I’ll take care of them.”
The staff member turned and immediately became respectful.
“Mentor Innocent.”
Innocent waved his hand, dismissing the staff member. He then turned to Fleming with a smile.
"You came straight here as soon as you returned. I assume it's for the Star's Eye, right?"
Fleming was surprised, "Did the mentor know I just got back today?"
"You're now a Star Alliance officer, so you don't need to call me mentor. Just use my name," Innocent smiled, then pointed to the Star's Eye, "On-duty mentors can monitor the Star's Eye's status at any time. I knew you stepped through the college gates the moment you arrived."
Fleming and Donohue exchanged glances, both a bit shocked.
Is the Star's Eye really that amazing?
Can it really monitor the movements of everyone in the college in real time?
"Would you like to take a look?" Innocent asked, pointing to the Star's Eye.
Fleming readily agreed, "Sure, thank you, mentor."
Innocent smiled warmly and led the two to the Star's Eye.
"The Star's Eye is a magical device created by Lord Starfall. This is the first prototype, specifically placed in Starlight College for practical use and data collection."
"It can sense all life forms within a certain range whose energy particle intensity meets a certain standard, capture their life information, and record it, then continuously monitor them in real time until they leave the detection range."
"Basically, any creature that reaches the level of a Squire, regardless of type, even puppets, is within the detection range."
Fleming was amazed, pointing to the light points on the Star's Eye, "These are the captured life forms?"
"Exactly. Green points represent the college's wizard apprentices, yellow points represent puppet creatures, and blue points represent other races. Different colors represent different power levels."
Fleming observed closely and indeed saw two dark green points in the monitoring room, with another point of a lighter color beside them, clearly representing the three of them.
Curious, Fleming tapped the green point representing himself, and soon a line of text appeared.
[Fleming Small, Human Male]
[Energy Level: 12 (Third-Level Wizard Apprentice)]
[Position: Star Alliance Officer]
[Threat Level: None]
"Any life form whose information has been captured is recorded on the Star's Eye," Innocent explained.
"Mentor, I heard the Star's Eye can also capture energy particle fluctuations during battles."
"That's correct. When creatures fight, they release more intense and active energy particle fluctuations, which the Star's Eye can capture in real time."
Innocent's face showed a hint of amusement.
"Thanks to the Star's Eye, there have been far fewer private duels in the college recently. The poor red-eyed crows finally have a bit of a break."
Fleming chuckled in agreement, but inwardly he was amazed.
Indeed, anyone chosen by Lord Su Nan to be a proxy controller is no ordinary person, capable of creating such a powerful and magical device.
He immediately realized the significant role the Star's Eye could play in guarding specific areas.
With the Star's Eye, any creature entering its detection range would be instantly captured and monitored in real time.
Unless they could completely mask their energy particle fluctuations and maintain it consistently, any slight leakage would be immediately detected by the Star's Eye.
The existence of the Star's Eye undoubtedly greatly reduces the possibility of enemy infiltration and ambushes!
Currently, it might not seem very significant, but if future interdimensional wars were to occur, its role would be extraordinary.
Even if used only to defend one's own territory, it would still have a significant impact.
"Mentor, what is the effective range of the Star's Eye?"
"The entire Zone 3 is within its monitoring range."
Innocent touched the surface of the Star's Eye, and the college's panoramic model shrank rapidly, the overall view pulling back to reveal three-dimensional models of two towers.
Fleming immediately recognized the Dragon Skeleton Tower and the Starlight Wizard Tower, where Lord Su Nan resided.
The number of dark green points on the two towers far exceeded those in the Starlight College.
After taking a look around, Donohue couldn't help but ask, "Where is Lord Su Nan's point?"
Innocent glanced at him, amused, "You want to monitor Lord Su Nan's movements?"
Donohue realized his mistake and laughed awkwardly.
At that moment, the Star's Eye emitted a buzzing sound, followed by a sharp alarm.
Everyone looked over in shock to see a prominent red circle suddenly appear on the Starlight Wizard Tower.
