Chapter 228: A Powerful Patronus (First Update)
Chapter 228: A Powerful Patronus (First Update)
The patronus charm is known as one of the most famous and powerful defensive spells in the witch world.
It is an extremely complex and difficult incantation that can summon a partially materialized positive force, known as a patronus.
Most witches in the witch world are unable to successfully cast the patronus charm, and even those who can manage to do so often fail to summon a fully corporeal patronus.
For the majority of witches who can cast the patronus charm, their patronuses are merely a mass of silvery-white gas and smoke.
A non-corporeal patronus can only barely withstand dementors, while a corporeal patronus can easily drive them away, fly, send messages over long distances, and even perform physical attacks to some extent.
However, the physical attack capabilities of most corporeal patronuses are rather limited, often resembling those of cats, dogs, rabbits, or even insects like ladybugs and dragonflies, which lack significant strength.
Patronuses in the form of bears, wolves, or tigers, on the other hand, are a different story.
Additionally, the patronus charm is a symbol of a witch's powerful and profound magical abilities.
In the past, witches who could summon a corporeal patronus were often appointed to high-ranking positions in the Wizengamot and the Ministry of Magic.
After a long period of continuous effort, Jerry finally succeeded in mastering this extremely difficult spell.
Actually, the incantation for the patronus charm is not particularly hard to obtain. Jerry had found the spell in a book he bought from Flourish and Blotts.
However, the difficulty of the spell was indeed more challenging than he had imagined.
With his then-current magical foundation, learning such a difficult spell through self-study was nearly impossible.
Therefore, to maximize his strength, he temporarily abandoned his study of the patronus charm and focused his efforts on other areas.
It was only after his magical foundation had significantly improved, and with the help of Voldemort, who served as a walking encyclopedia of magic, that Jerry managed to successfully cast a corporeal patronus before Christmas.
Generally, witches do not know what form their patronus will take until they actually cast it.
Based on experience, a patronus usually takes the form of an animal the witch is close to, or it may reflect the witch's personality, current emotions, and other factors.
Jerry did not have any particular fondness for any animal. When he bought Crookshanks, it was purely because he thought the cat could ward off evil and was useful.
Currently, he mostly sends Crookshanks to stay with Hermione, who dotes on the cat, and Crookshanks also enjoys Hermione's company. Jerry simply does not have much time to take care of it.
Thus, before successfully casting it, Jerry had no idea that his patronus would be a towering figure—several meters tall—of a giant!
Indeed, standing before Jerry, under his control, was a towering luminous giant.
Jerry had seen the form of a giant patronus in magic books, but it was extremely rare. In the recorded history of witches, there was only one known instance of such a patronus.
That was a famous ancient Greek witch, whose existence was documented in chocolate frog cards, known as Andros the Invincible.
During his lifetime, he was the most powerful witch, unbeatable in duels, and could even cast the patronus charm without a wand.
Actually, this can be understood.
After all, the Killing Curse did not exist in ancient Greece, and the patronus charm, being one of the most powerful defensive spells, could basically defend against most magical attacks of that time.
Imagine a giant patronus, unafraid of any spell, possessing the same immense strength as a giant. That would be terrifying for any witch.
The moment Andros the Invincible summoned his giant patronus, he had already won.
"Perhaps, I should test its power to see if it’s really as strong as the rumors suggest."
Looking at the giant patronus he had summoned, Jerry decided to test its various aspects to better understand its power.
And the best way to test it would be through actual combat.
Turning to look around the box space, he quickly found a suitable target to test the patronus' power.
"Norbert, come here!"
He sent a mental command to his first contracted fire dragon, and soon, the nearly adult Norbert, reluctantly flapping its wings, flew toward Jerry.
Norbert was already over a year old and had basically mastered flying and breathing fire. However, it was still a few months away from reaching full adulthood.
Even so, its destructive power was already quite formidable.
Dragon claws capable of easily tearing through human flesh, dragon teeth sharp enough to bite through steel plates, powerful magical flames, and scales harder than steel—all these demonstrated the strength of a Norwegian Ridgeback.
"Alright, don’t feel bad. You’re just playing with Norasha over there. If you do well, I’ll give you an extra meal tonight."
Feeling Norbert’s sense of grievance, Jerry comforted him with a helpless look.
Because Norbert had a high resistance to magic, Jerry often used Norbert to experiment with his spells. This led Norbert to know that whenever Jerry called, it wasn’t going to be good.
This time, however, there was no other choice. Normally, the task of experimenting with magic was alternated between Norbert and the basilisk, but the basilisk couldn’t fly. To fully test the power of the giant patronus, Norbert was the only option.
There was another fire dragon in the box, a Peruvian Venomfang named Norasha, which Jerry had taken from a black market merchant in France. However, it had only just learned to breathe fire and couldn’t fly yet.
"Full attack!"
Jerry issued the command, and Norbert immediately took off, unleashing a massive dragon flame at the standing giant patronus.
To test the patronus' resistance to magic, Jerry didn’t make it dodge but instead raised its arms to cross them in front of its chest.
The powerful dragon flame, capable of melting steel, hit the giant patronus but failed to cause any damage.
However, Jerry could clearly feel that the speed at which his magic power was depleting increased when the giant patronus was hit by the magical attack.
Seeing that magic was ineffective, Norbert swooped down and clawed at the giant patronus’ head.
Again, Jerry did not make it dodge.
The sharp dragon claws grabbed the giant patronus’ head and, with little effort, tore it apart.
Clearly, the giant patronus had low defense against physical attacks.
However, within just a few seconds, the giant patronus’ head had completely restored itself to its original state.
