Chapter 227: The Advancing Baboon
Chapter 227: The Advancing Baboon
The envoy frowned.
What was wrong with this man? Did he not sense the barrier of Orichalcos at all?
Normally, just feeling the energy rippling from the activation of the barrier should send a chill through one's soul. The envoy observed Du Xuan with confusion, but soon suppressed his emotions.
Regardless, with the barrier now active, his power had been enhanced to the maximum. No matter where this guy came from, as long as he offered a sacrifice to the God of Orichalcos through this duel, it would be enough.
"I activate the magic card, 'Angel's Charity.' I draw three cards, then select two cards from my hand to discard."
He drew from his deck, and two cards from his hand were sent to the graveyard, as if devoured by the blood-colored duel disk.
"I then set a monster and another card. My turn is over."
Du Xuan: "My turn, draw."
He drew a monster card.
"Normal Summon 'Asura'."
[Asura: 1700 ATK]
Asura, a four-star soul monster with the ability to attack all opposing monsters on the field. It was also recognized as an excellent lower-level bruiser in the early real-card duels.
"Asura attacks the face-down monster."
Asura danced with his six arms, wielding short swords, and threw flying swords. The face-down monster on the field was instantly shredded.
"The monster you attacked is 'Quick Flying Squirrel'," said the envoy. "When this card is destroyed in battle, I recover 1000 life points, and then I can special summon any number of 'Quick Flying Squirrel' from my deck in face-down defense mode.
I special summon two more 'Quick Flying Squirrels'."
[Envoy: LP 4000 → LP 5000]
Two new face-down monsters appeared on his field.
Quick Flying Squirrel was also an excellent monster with a last will and testament. Destroying it would give your opponent life points, but if you didn't, your opponent could instantly gather tributes for an advanced summon, easily summoning a powerful upper-level monster and gaining field control in the duel.
"Asura's effect allows me to attack all monsters on your field once." Du Xuan waved his hand lightly, "Attack the remaining two 'Quick Flying Squirrels'."
Asura threw his flying swords again, and the remaining two face-down monsters were pierced by a thousand swords, exploding.
"So I recover 1000 life points for each Quick Flying Squirrel destroyed."
[Envoy: LP 5000 → LP 7000]
"But it's not over yet."
The corner of that man's mouth twitched, revealing a sinister smile.
"At the moment you destroyed the last mole, the effect of this guy in the graveyard also activated!" The envoy raised his hand and shouted, "I activate the effect of 'Green Baboon, the Forest Guardian' in the graveyard! When a Beast-Type monster I control is destroyed by battle and sent to the graveyard, I can pay 1000 life points to special summon this card from my hand or graveyard!" (Old effect)
Hearing this, Du Xuan instinctively raised his eyebrows, thinking, "Are you just making things up? This card can only be activated when a Beast-Type monster is destroyed by a card effect, right?"
But he immediately realized, "Oh right, this is the GX era. This isn't an anime effect, but the pre-adjusted effect of 'Green Baboon, the Forest Guardian' from the real-life card game."
Any player who had experienced the GX era of the real-card duels would never forget this card. Green Baboon once had incredible potential when it was first released, and a top-tier Beast-Type beatdown deck was built around it.
In fact, K Corporation had made rulings and weakened the effect of this card later on. With environmental acceleration and version changes, players nowadays might not understand its original strength. But Du Xuan was fortunate to have experienced that early version and still remembered it.
The current effect of Green Baboon stated that it could only be special summoned from the hand or graveyard when a Beast-Type monster on the field was destroyed by a card effect. But the earliest version simply stated that it could be activated when a Beast-Type monster was destroyed.
And during the GX era, the ruling for this card was that it could also be activated during the damage step. In other words, when a Beast-Type monster was destroyed by battle, Green Baboon could still jump out from the graveyard.
This meant that as long as Green Baboon was in the duelist's hand or graveyard, almost all Beast-Type monsters they controlled were effectively granted destruction immunity.
Such a ruling change undoubtedly weakened the Baboon Deck conceptually, essentially taking away its claim to immortality.
However, it was clear that the version Yu Xuan was facing now was from before the ruling change.
And if his opponent was using a Beast-type deck specialized around Green Baboon as its core, then what Yu Xuan was up against might very well be a variant of the top-tier Baboon BEAT Deck from the GX era in its heyday.
"I see," Yu Xuan murmured, understanding dawning on him. "No wonder they say the envoy sent by the organization is extraordinary."
Bringing a top-tier Deck from the GX era into this spirit world was nothing short of a massacre.
However, Yu Xuan narrowed his eyes, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips as he found this Duel even more intriguing.
This trip to the spirit world was turning out to be quite the adventure.
"I pay 1000 Life Points! Green Baboon returns from the Graveyard!"
[Envoy: LP 7000 → LP 6000]
A massive green baboon leaped onto the field, pounding its chest in a show of intimidation as it glared ferociously at Asura.
[Green Baboon, the Forest Guardian: ATK 2600]
"Then, I activate my face-down card, 'Rush Attack'! Destroy one Beast-type monster on my side of the field, then select one monster on your side of the field and return it to the Deck!" The envoy declared.
He paused, his sinister face twisting into a cruel smile.
"I destroy my own Green Baboon and return your Asura to your Deck!"
The green baboon roared and charged like a human cannonball. Asura was struck and instantly turned into a golden beam of light, returning to Yu Xuan's Deck. But the green baboon also self-destructed in the process, exploding into pieces.
"But at this moment, the effect of the other Green Baboon discarded in the Graveyard activates!" The envoy cackled. "When a Beast-type monster I control is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, by paying 1000 Life Points, I can Special Summon this card from my hand or Graveyard!"
[Envoy: LP 6000 → LP 5000]
As soon as the green baboon on the field shattered, a vortex opened up on the ground, leading to the Graveyard. The second Green Baboon emerged, pounding its chest and roaring.
[Green Baboon, the Forest Guardian: ATK 2600]
"Furthermore, Green Baboon gains power from the 'Orichalcos Barrier'!"
The green baboon pounded its chest again, letting out a deep roar. A hexagram appeared on its forehead, and its body seemed to be engulfed in a greenish flame.
[Green Baboon, the Forest Guardian: ATK 2600 → ATK 3100]
"Hahaha! Behold the strongest power bestowed upon me by the gods!"
Yu Xuan pondered.
Green Baboon, the Forest Guardian, was indeed a powerful card in this era. However, Asura was a Soul Monster, and it would have returned to his hand during the End Phase of the turn it was summoned anyway. So, hadn't the envoy been a bit hasty in activating that Trap?
Although it was true that returning Asura to his Deck had cost Yu Xuan an extra card, he soon recalled how the Devil Bishop hadn't even recognized the artificial human, Sogar.
Perhaps the spirits in this spirit world generally had less knowledge about Duel Monsters cards and their effects, which would explain why they didn't recognize the properties of Soul Monsters.
In fact, Yu Xuan's advantage in simply knowing the card pool was already significant in the anime world, and it seemed to be even more so in this spirit world.
The envoy stood with his hands on his hips, still smugly chuckling.
"I don't know who you are, but regret your foolish challenge. In the face of the immortal Green Baboon, you never had a chance!"
