Chapter 226: Unforeseen Departure, Unreachable Thoughts
"Xuan'er is dead?"
A formidable figure, holding a broken jade pendant, exclaimed in shock and anger.
The jade pendant in his hand was obtained during an exploration of a mysterious cave many years ago. It was an extraordinary treasure; by infusing it with one's blood, he could sense their life force at all times.
He had acquired three such pendants, and one of them was infused with the blood of his beloved great-grandson, Mo Xuan.
Just now, however, he discovered that the pendant with Mo Xuan's blood had completely shattered.
The broken pendant signified the permanent loss of the life force it was attuned to.
In other words, his great-grandson, Mo Xuan, was dead. No wonder he was furious.
"Grandfather, what has happened to anger you so?"
At that moment, a middle-aged man dressed in a dark gray robe rushed in from outside and asked anxiously.
"Xuan'er is dead!" the formidable figure replied in a deep voice.
"What? Xuan'er is dead?!?" The middle-aged man exclaimed in disbelief, "Impossible! Elder Qiu was protecting him. Who could have killed him?"
He didn't doubt his grandfather's words because he knew that his grandfather possessed a rare treasure that could sense Xuan'er's condition from a thousand miles away.
However, he, too, found it hard to believe. Elder Qiu was a martial arts master, just one step away from the grandmaster realm of Internal Organ Perfection. Under his protection, who could harm Xuan'er?
"You're asking me? I should be the one asking you!" The formidable figure's aura suddenly erupted, causing the middle-aged man in dark gray to feel suffocated, "I was only in seclusion for a few days, and Xuan'er left Yunzhou. How could you, his father, not even know about it?"
"Grandfather, I've been handling sect affairs lately. I only knew that Xuan'er took a group of disciples to teach a lesson to a manor that offended him, but I didn't know he had chased them out of Yunzhou!" The middle-aged man in dark gray wiped the sweat from his forehead. Despite having attained the martial arts grandmaster realm, he still felt breathless in the face of his grandfather's terrifying aura.
"Investigate! I want to know who killed Xuan'er. I will wipe out their entire clan!"
With the formidable figure's order, the disciples of the Liuyun Sect finally learned that their young sect master had been killed.
This news shook the entire Liuyun Sect.
Everyone knew how dearly the Grand Elder doted on the young sect master.
Now that he was dead, no one could imagine the extent of the Grand Elder's fury.
But one thing was certain: Yunzhou would soon be in turmoil.
...
As the Liuyun Sect's actions stirred up waves in Yunzhou, in Qingfeng Town, the old doctor had finally stabilized Fang Tao and the others' injuries.
Ma Gu and the others were preparing to join the surviving townsfolk in dealing with the corpses.
There were too many deaths in the town.
Including the Liuyun Sect disciples killed by Lu Qing, there were at least a hundred bodies.
It was impractical to bury so many corpses.
Some families had been completely wiped out by the Liuyun Sect disciples, leaving no one to take care of the bodies.
If these corpses were not dealt with promptly, they could lead to an outbreak of plague, causing even more trouble.
Therefore, the best solution was to burn them all.
The townsfolk were grateful to the old doctor for his medical skills and to Lu Qing and his group for saving their lives. Naturally, they followed their instructions without hesitation.
Although they were reluctant to bury the villains along with their loved ones, compared to the threat of a plague, this minor discomfort could be ignored.
So, under the guidance of the townspeople, Lu Qing and his group found a patch of wasteland outside the town and dug a large pit.
Then, with the combined efforts of many, they moved all the corpses from the town and its surroundings into the pit. They piled wood and kindling on top of the bodies.
Of course, this wouldn't be enough.
Among the corpses in the pit were many disciples of the Liuyun Sect, their bodies strengthened through martial arts training. Ordinary firewood might not be enough to reduce them to ashes.
Thus, after the wood was stacked, Lu Qing took out a jade bottle and poured a red liquid around the pit.
Once the bottle was empty, he picked up a torch and asked everyone to step back before throwing it into the pit.
At first, no one understood Lu Qing's actions.
But when the torch landed and flames soared into the sky, sending waves of scorching heat, everyone's faces paled in shock.
Even though they had retreated dozens of meters away, the heat was still almost unbearable.
How high was the temperature in that pit?
What was that red liquid Lu Qing had poured that could fuel such an intense blaze?
For a moment, the townspeople's reverence for Lu Qing deepened.
The fire in the pit burned for a full hour before it finally died down.
When the temperature around the pit began to drop, they approached to inspect it. They saw that aside from ashes, there was nothing left, not even a single bone.
They even noticed that some of the soil and sand around the pit had been melted and vitrified by the intense heat.
The townspeople were both amazed and relieved.
With the bodies burned to such an extent, there was no chance of a plague breaking out.
For their town, this was a blessing in disguise amidst all the tragedy.
Otherwise, they would have had to flee their homes, leaving behind the generations of memories and roots they had established.
The rest was simple.
They filled in the pit and returned to the town.
Along the way, Lu Qing remained silent.
Even upon returning to the inn, he was quiet and pensive, standing by the window, gazing into the distance, lost in thought.
"Qing."
The old doctor, sensing his disciple's unusual mood, walked over.
"Master, I cannot find peace in my heart," Lu Qing said quietly.
The old doctor paused, "Is it because of that little girl?"
"Not just her," Lu Qing shook his head. "I just feel that this matter shouldn't end like this."
"What do you want to do?"
"I want to go to the Liuyun Sect," Lu Qing said, his eyes fixed on the sky outside the window. "If I don't go, I won't be able to find peace or clarity."
"Very well, then I shall accompany you." The old doctor nodded.
"Master..." Lu Qing turned, surprised.
"Don't look at me like that. Do you think I'm that kind of pedantic person who treats everyone the same, regardless of their actions?"
The old doctor gave a soft laugh, but his smile was cold.
He turned and looked at the corner where a bloodstain remained—the spot where a small figure had once stood.
"This old man may be a healer, but that doesn't mean I'm just a healer."
