Chapter 226: If You Do Not Take This Path, Your Mind Cannot Truly Be Clear
"Xuan has died?" A figure radiating terrifying aura clutched a shattered Jade Token, his face contorted with shock and fury.
The Jade Token in his hand was a rare treasure he had obtained during a mysterious expedition into an ancient ruin long ago. It was a Unique Treasure—one that, once infused with a person’s essence blood, allowed its owner to sense that individual’s life force at any distance.
Back then, he had acquired three such tokens. One of them had been infused with the essence blood of his most beloved grandson, Mo Xuan.
But just moments ago, he had discovered that this very token—bound to Mo Xuan—had completely shattered.
A shattered Jade Token meant the life force of its bearer had vanished entirely.
That meant Mo Xuan was dead.
How could he not be enraged?
"Grandfather, what has happened? Why are you so furious?"
A middle-aged man in dark robes suddenly appeared at the doorway, rushing in with urgency.
"Xuan is dead!" The figure spoke in a low, heavy tone.
"What?! Xuan is dead?!" The man gasped in disbelief. "Impossible! He was protected by Elder Qiu. Who could possibly have killed him?"
He didn’t doubt his grandfather’s words. He knew the old man possessed a Unique Treasure capable of detecting the state of his grandson from a thousand miles away.
Yet he still couldn’t believe it. After all, Elder Qiu was a Nei Fu Da Cheng master—only one step short of the legendary Nei Fu Man Yuan Zong Shi realm. Under his protection, how could anyone harm Xuan?
"You ask me? I’d like to ask you!" The figure’s aura exploded violently, pressing down on the middle-aged man like a crushing weight, making him gasp for air. "I’ve only been in seclusion for a few days. And yet, Xuan has already left Yun Zhou. As his father, how could you not know?"
"Grandfather, I’ve been dealing with sect affairs these past days. I only knew Xuan took a group of disciples out to teach a certain manor a lesson for offending him. I had no idea he’d actually pursued them beyond Yun Zhou!" The man’s forehead broke into cold sweat. Though he had reached the Wu Dao Zong Shi level, the sheer pressure from his grandfather left him struggling to breathe.
"Find out! Now! I want to know who killed Xuan. I’ll wipe out his entire family. I’ll exterminate his whole clan!"
With that command, every disciple of Liu Yun Zong realized the unthinkable—Shao Zong Zhu had been murdered.
The entire sect trembled.
Who didn’t know how deeply the Tai Shang Elder cherished Xuan?
Now he was dead. No one could imagine the fury the elder must be feeling.
But everyone knew—Yun Zhou was about to shake to its core.
…
While the entire Yun Zhou region was thrown into turmoil by Liu Yun Zong’s reaction, in Qingfeng Town, Old Doctor finally managed to stabilize Fang Tao and the others’ injuries.
Ma Gu and the rest were preparing to work with the surviving townspeople to deal with the corpses.
The number of the dead was staggering.
Including the Liu Yun Zong disciples slain by Lu Qing, there were at least a hundred bodies.
Burying them all properly was clearly impossible.
Not only had entire families been slaughtered by the sect’s disciples, leaving no one to collect their remains—but with so many corpses piled up, if not dealt with quickly, disease would surely spread, bringing far greater disaster.
The only sensible solution was to burn them all.
Old Doctor was a healer. Lu Qing and the others had killed the villains and saved the town. The townspeople, deeply grateful, followed their every word without hesitation.
Though they were reluctant to burn the evil men—along with their own loved ones—they knew that preventing a plague was far more important than their personal discomfort.
Under the townspeople’s guidance, Lu Qing and the others found a barren patch of land outside the town and dug a massive pit.
Working together, they moved every corpse—both inside and outside the town—into the pit, then piled up wood and firewood on top.
But even that wasn’t enough.
Many of the corpses were Liu Yun Zong disciples—martial cultivators with hardened bodies. Ordinary flames wouldn’t burn them completely.
So after stacking the wood, Lu Qing took out a jade bottle and began pouring a red liquid around the edge of the pit, continuously dripping it in.
When the entire bottle was empty, he took a torch, ordered everyone to retreat, and then tossed it into the pit.
At first, no one understood what he was doing.
But as the torch hit the ground, flames roared upward in a violent inferno. The searing heat wave that rolled out made even those standing dozens of meters away stagger and gasp.
If even the heat at that distance was unbearable, what must the temperature inside the pit have been?
What kind of substance had Lu Qing poured into the ground—something that could generate such a terrifying blaze?
From that moment on, the townspeople’s respect for Lu Qing deepened even further.
The fire burned for a full hour before finally dying down.
When the heat at the pit’s edge had cooled enough, they approached to inspect.
Inside, only ash remained. Not a single bone or scrap of flesh was left.
Even the edges of the pit’s walls had been so intensely heated that some of the soil had melted into a glass-like substance.
The townspeople stared in awe. Their hearts eased—this kind of destruction meant no plague could ever arise.
For their town, it was a stroke of fortune in the midst of disaster.
Otherwise, if a plague broke out, they’d all be forced to abandon their ancestral home—fleeing the land their families had lived on for generations.
Afterward, the task was simple.
They filled the pit with earth and returned to town.
On the way back, Lu Qing said nothing.
When they reached the inn, he stood silently by the window, staring into the distance, lost in thought.
"A Qing," Old Doctor noticed the change in his disciple’s mood and walked over.
"Master," Lu Qing said softly, "my heart is not at peace."
Old Doctor paused. "Is it because of that little girl?"
"No," Lu Qing shook his head. "It’s not just her. I feel this matter shouldn’t end here."
"What do you plan to do?"
"I want to go to Liu Yun Zong," Lu Qing said, eyes fixed on the sky. "If I don’t take this path, I cannot find peace. My mind will never be clear."
"Then I’ll go with you," Old Doctor said, nodding.
"Master…?" Lu Qing turned in surprise.
"Don’t look at me like that. Do you really think I’m some old fool who treats good and evil the same?" Old Doctor chuckled, but his smile was cold.
He turned toward a bloodstain in the corner—the very spot where the tiny figure had once stood.
"Though I am a healer," he said, "it doesn’t mean I am only a healer."
