Chapter 225: Jonin Instructors Fall Short of Interns
Chapter 225: Jonin Instructors Fall Short of Interns
"I wonder what gifts they're preparing for me?" Obito couldn't help but think during their lunch break.
With less than a week left until his birthday, he felt that Mu Yue, Yahiko, and the others must have already prepared presents for him.
"Guy-sensei's gift will probably be a spandex tracksuit," Obito speculated.
It wasn't that he thought Might Guy was being careless with his gifts, choosing to give everyone spandex outfits. Obito felt that Guy simply loved those tight-fitting clothes too much.
He had never seen Guy wear anything else, and he suspected that Guy's wardrobe consisted solely of variations of those outfits.
Obito could understand the sentiment of wanting to share something you love with your friends.
However, if Guy really did gift him spandex, Obito knew he would only keep it as a collection item and never wear it.
He could empathize with Guy's enthusiasm, but he couldn't bring himself to embrace Guy's unique fashion sense. Wearing those outfits would only invite Kakashi's ridicule.
"As for Rin, she'll probably give me something she made herself," Obito said, recalling the gifts that Rin had given to Kakashi and Guy in the past.
Rin had presented Kakashi with a handcrafted artifact and Guy with a painting she had made herself.
Obito felt that it would be nice if Rin painted their outing from the day before, as long as she didn't include Kakashi in the picture and only depicted him and Rin.
"As for Kakashi and Sensei, they'll probably give me something useful," he recalled Guy's training tools from his last birthday and the cultivation elixir Kakashi had given without hesitation.
Although the elixir was valuable, Obito felt that it would be better to receive something like Guy's gift instead, as the elixir would be consumed and disappear, whereas he preferred gifts that would last.
"I wonder what gift Teacher Mu Yue will give me," Obito said, unable to hide his anticipation.
If he had to pick the gift he was most excited about, it would undoubtedly be Mu Yue's.
Obito felt that Mu Yue put a lot of thought into the birthday gifts for her disciples. For Kakashi's gift, she had learned blacksmithing and crafted a short blade using precious materials.
On Guy's birthday, she had helped Guy's father advance to the rank of Jonin, and her gift to him had been a taijutsu scroll that she had created with Guy's father.
"Hehe, I wonder if Teacher Mu Yue will directly reveal herself as the reincarnation of the Sage of the Six Paths and tell me that I will definitely become the Hokage..."
As he indulged in his thoughts, Obito found himself daydreaming about something he knew was far-fetched.
"Obito, what are you thinking about that has you smiling so happily?"
Rin's voice snapped Obito back to reality.
"It's nothing. My birthday is coming up, and I'm just happy that I'll get to eat cake," Obito chuckled in response.
"Birthdays are indeed wonderful occasions for everyone to come together and have fun," Rin said as she sat down next to Obito, hugging her knees and gazing up at the sky with a smile.
"Rin, do you think there's something wrong with my smile?" Obito asked, remembering Kakashi's previous mockery.
"There's nothing wrong with it at all! Your smile is very unique, Obito, and it makes you look kind," Rin replied softly with a smile in her voice.
With Rin's praise, Obito instantly dismissed Kakashi's words as baseless slander. Rin's opinion held far more weight with him than Kakashi's.
"Haha, your smile is pretty unique too, Rin. It makes you look very gentle," Obito said, unable to stop the corners of his mouth from turning up.
"I think everyone's smiles are great, unlike Kakashi, who's too embarrassed to show his face. He can't accept his own shortcomings, so he ridicules others," Obito praised his companions while taking a subtle dig at Kakashi.
Kakashi, who was on his way to ask Mu Yue a question, happened to overhear Obito's disparaging comment and paused to reply, "I'm just stating the truth."
"I think you're just jealous of my kind smile," Obito retorted confidently, bolstered by Rin's praise.
"Heh," Kakashi coldly snorted in response without elaborating further.
"You know, the fact that you wear that mask all the time shows that you're insecure about your face," Obito said, his tone turning aggressive as he remembered how Kakashi had interrupted his alone time with Rin the day before.
"That's because I'm a Jonin, and you're not even a fully-fledged ninja yet. Concealing one's true appearance is a basic skill for ninjas," Kakashi explained.
Kakashi's eyebrows twitched, and he knew this day would come after being defeated by Obito.
"Ninja rankings aren't just about strength. They also consider your grasp of various knowledge, intelligence gathering abilities, and trap-making skills. With your current level, you wouldn't be able to pass the first stage of the Chunin exams without your teammates' help." Kakashi said, after a moment's thought.
Since he couldn't beat Obito in a practical fight, he decided to outwit him with his extensive theoretical knowledge.
"What's the point of talking about all this when I'm not even a full-fledged ninja yet? The fact is, I'm still stronger than you," Obito countered, hitting a sore spot.
Kakashi was left speechless.
"I need to train harder and win back my pride," Kakashi thought to himself.
He couldn't stand the way Obito was acting superior, and he vowed to turn the tables as soon as possible to end this humiliation.
With that in mind, Kakashi decided to ignore Obito and seek out Mu Yue to ask about the issues he was having with his Lightning Release breathing technique.
Even though it was their break time, Mu Yue never denied her diligent students the opportunity to train. She gladly answered all of Kakashi's questions and even provided demonstrations.
After receiving guidance from Mu Yue, Kakashi quickly formed a mental image, instantly understanding most of the technique.
"So that's how it is!" Kakashi exclaimed, his eyes widening in realization.
"When you encounter problems, don't try to solve them alone," Mu Yue advised with a gentle smile. "Whether it's cultivation or other matters, feel free to come to me."
"Mmm, thank you for your guidance," Kakashi nodded in gratitude and then began practicing the Lightning Release breathing technique.
Mu Yue glanced at Kakashi's proficiency in the Lightning Release breathing technique and was pleased to see a significant increase; it had already reached over sixty points.
Ever since Kakashi's battle with the Jonin, where he had a breakthrough, his progress in the Lightning Release breathing technique had been rapid. At this rate, he might even break Obito's record for mastering the breathing technique.
"Lightning Release, Earth Release, swordsmanship, and breathing technique..." Mu Yue pondered Kakashi's areas of focus for development.
In the original story, Kakashi had copied over a thousand jutsu with his Sharingan, earning him the title of "Copy Ninja." She was determined to steer him away from that path.
In Mu Yue's opinion, it was better to master ten jutsu thoroughly than to learn a thousand haphazardly.
Of course, that didn't mean he would only learn ten jutsu; it was just an analogy. It was more beneficial to learn systematically and in-depth rather than picking up a myriad of techniques superficially—except for those with cheat-like abilities like Kakashi.
