Chapter 225: A Failure?
Chapter 225: A Failure?
"This won't do. We can't just sit here and wait to be killed by others," Nightingale said with a hint of impatience.
Jiang Cheng couldn't help but smile wryly at her words.
He felt that besides her straightforwardness and limited conversation, she also had a rather impulsive personality.
"We're not doing nothing. Ice Force and I are discussing a plan to find that traitor," he replied.
"What plan?" Nightingale asked.
"We're still discussing it," he said.
Nightingale fell silent after hearing this.
After a while, she said, "Fine, if you find that traitor, let me know. I don't like being pursued, so whoever pursues me should be prepared for the consequences."
"Alright, I understand," Jiang Cheng said and hung up the phone.
He wasn't optimistic about Ice Force's plan, but with no other options, he could only accept it. It was better to keep it to himself than to tell Nightingale.
Fortunately, he had his own idea that might help find the traitor.
The next morning, the streets were bustling with people, a lively scene.
A tall man in his thirties strolled leisurely through the crowd, humming a tune.
He was in a good mood.
If things went as planned, he would soon receive the 500,000 funds.
Five hundred thousand.
For a Tier 6 Force Warrior like him, this was a substantial income, not to mention that he hadn't taken any action. He had only waited for a while and sent a text message after spotting the target.
Just then, his phone vibrated.
The tall man stopped walking, took out his phone, and a smile crept onto his face.
But his cautious nature made him check his surroundings first to ensure no one noticed him before answering the call and walking towards a secluded area.
"Something happened," he said into the phone.
The tall man's expression changed instantly upon hearing this.
"What happened?" he asked anxiously.
"The assassin I sent out yesterday hasn't contacted me yet. I tried calling, but no one answered," he explained.
The tall man took a sharp breath upon hearing this.
"Does that mean it failed?"
The person on the other end of the line paused before replying, "You could say that."
"..." The tall man was stunned.
After a moment of shock, he became uneasy.
If the mission failed and the assassin was killed, it would be better. But if he was captured alive and revealed everything, it would be problematic.
He had been very cautious, never meeting the assassin in person, and being extra careful with text messages. However, if his existence was exposed, the Dawn Society would spare no effort to find him.
"Don't worry," the person on the phone reassured him. "He doesn't know your identity."
"But why did it fail?" The tall man asked, gritting his teeth.
Losing track of the target was understandable, but losing contact was beyond his comprehension.
How could a Tier 3 Force Warrior, with knowledge of the opponent's intelligence and acting from the shadows, be defeated by a Tier 2 Force Warrior?
"I'm not sure either," the man on the phone said, furrowing his brows.
"He has successfully completed several tracking missions without fail and even assisted in killing a Tier 4 Force Warrior. He shouldn't have been defeated by a Tier 2 Force Warrior. Do you think he might have hidden his strength?"
This was the only plausible explanation he could think of.
"Impossible!" The tall man exclaimed, his voice rising.
Realizing his outburst, he quickly lowered his voice.
"He only broke through to Tier 2 level a half-month ago, setting a new record and earning a Vajra Talisman of the importance of talent. You're telling me he's still a Tier 3 Force Warrior?"
"That's impossible," the man agreed, nodding.
"It seems he was careless and slipped up," the tall man spoke, his unease grew.
"Damn it!" The tall man cursed. "I bet that guy reported this to his superiors. My situation is about to get tricky."
"I understand, and that's why I'm calling you. I want to remind you to be careful over the next few days. We still have plenty of time to complete the task, so there's no rush. When you feel the time is right, contact me, and I'll send a stronger assassin to ensure that there won't be any more accidents."
The tall man frowned, "I understand, but the target will likely be more cautious now, and it's possible he won't show up."
In this line of work, it's all or nothing. Either you don't make a move, or you strike with certainty. Otherwise, you risk alerting the target, making it harder to succeed.
"I get it. You're leading this operation, and I'll fully cooperate with you. Oh, I'll transfer 200,000 to your account first, and then the remaining amount after the task is completed."
"Alright."
The tall man's expression improved upon hearing this.
After all, the other party was in the open, while he operated in the shadows. Even if Bing Li and his team knew there was a traitor, what could they do?
Once the target appeared at the meeting, he would simply call his people, and the traitor would surely change positions, unlike last time, where he had sat near the barbecue stall.
Meanwhile, Jiang Cheng arrived at the headquarters.
As he took the elevator to the office building, he paid close attention to the expressions of those around him.
If he were the traitor, seeing Jiang Cheng would likely cause some change in expression, unless he was an incredibly skilled actor.
Unfortunately, as he walked, he didn't spot anyone suspicious, nor did he feel like he was being watched.
Upon entering Bing Li's office, Jiang Cheng arrived as promised, and Bing Li nodded.
"Canghai, for the next period, act as you normally would and leave through the exit. Rest assured, I've arranged for protection inside the meeting, and I'll also monitor any suspicious individuals in the surrounding area. Once we catch him, we'll know who hired the assassin, and the truth will be revealed."
As he spoke, he took out a talisman.
"This is the Vajra Talisman you asked for last night."
"Thank you, Bing Li."
Jiang Cheng reached out and took the talisman.
"Then I'll head back to cultivate."
"Alright, go ahead."
Jiang Cheng turned, and a sense of discomfort rose in his back.
He knew Bing Li was watching him.
However, compared to last night, this feeling of discomfort was much less intense.
Only after closing the door did the feeling in his back fade.
Jiang Cheng looked at the Vajra Talisman in his hand and shook his head.
If he were to encounter a Level 6 or higher enemy, this talisman would be as flimsy as paper.
But since Bing Li was only willing to give him this, there was nothing he could do.
"Waiting passively for the enemy to appear is always the worst option. If we can take the initiative and expose the traitor, we won't have to take such a big risk."
Jiang Cheng's gaze intensified.
Doing this wouldn't be easy.
But there was a way.
The traitor waited at the entrance for him to appear, assuming they knew he was coming to headquarters. Only then would waiting at the exit be useful.
If they didn't even know whether he was coming or not, they couldn't possibly wait at the entrance indefinitely.
This gave Jiang Cheng an opportunity.
His psychic energy far surpassed that of ordinary people, allowing him to sense the gaze of someone behind him within a certain range. If the person was watching from a slightly further distance, the feeling would be even more apparent.
However, this range was limited to just a few dozen meters.
If the traitor was further away, it would be difficult to detect them.
But having a plan was better than having none.
For the next period, Jiang Cheng didn't plan to seclude himself in cultivation but decided to spend time in crowded places.
Perhaps with some luck, he would sense the traitor and then deal with the situation.
If luck wasn't on his side, there was nothing he could do but continue to be the bait.
