Chapter 223: The Homeland Reconstruction Plan
Chapter 223: The Homeland Reconstruction Plan
8:00 a.m.
Ye Ci arrived in Verity Lake Town by helicopter. As the current Champion of the Padia League, her job wasn't just to recruit talent for the league but also to maintain peace and stability in the Padia region.
Upon learning of the incident, Ye Ci made her way to Verity Lake Town without delay.
Miss Jun Sha, who was directing the rescue operation for the injured, immediately came forward to report on the previous night's events when she learned of the arrival of the Champion.
Jun Sha: "The fire started at around 4 a.m. due to a trainer who forgot to put out their campfire before leaving the mountain, causing an ember to fall on the dry leaves nearby."
"The fire department and the police station received emergency calls at 4:10 a.m. By the time the fire department arrived, the fire had already been raging for twenty minutes and was spreading further."
"The fire department immediately began fire-fighting efforts, but there are a lot of combustible materials on the mountain during this season, and the fire was raging fiercely. We could only create firebreaks to prevent the spread, but we were unable to extinguish the entire blaze quickly."
"At the most critical moment, a..." Jun Sha paused for a moment before continuing, "...a trainer came to our aid. He sent out a Pidgeot, and that Pidgeot used Rain Dance, which caused the fire to weaken."
"It wasn't until 6 a.m. that the mountain fire was completely put out. After that, we immediately launched a search and rescue operation."
As they entered the mountain, Ye Ci listened to Jun Sha's report.
Upon hearing that a trainer had sent out a Pidgeot to extinguish the fire with Rain Dance, she couldn't help but ask, "Don't the Pokemon of the fire department know Rain Dance?"
"Yes, they do." Jun Sha's expression turned strange. "But the power of those Pokemon is insufficient. Both the coverage area and the intensity of the rain were too weak to effectively curb the spread of the fire."
"As for that trainer's Pidgeot..."
Jun Sha paused to imagine before describing it, "It has mastered the move Rain Dance to a miraculous level. It wasn't an ordinary Rain Dance; it was a torrential downpour that engulfed the entire back mountain. Thanks to it, the fire was brought under control so quickly."
Hearing this, Ye Ci's face showed a look of surprise.
A Pidgeot that has practiced Rain Dance to a miraculous level?
That was indeed rare. While Pidgeot was a rather rare Pokemon, she had seen a few in the hands of other trainers during her long career as a trainer.
However, those trainers tended to focus on moves like Dragon Rage and Feather Dance instead of weather-type field moves like Rain Dance.
Ye Ci nodded as she recalled various past experiences. "It seems we have to properly thank that trainer."
As they spoke, the two of them officially entered the back mountain.
Before coming here, Ye Ci had imagined countless scenes of devastation.
But when she truly stepped into the area, what she saw was a lush landscape filled with verdant grass.
Ye Ci was stunned for a moment, but soon, she noticed something amiss.
That wasn't real grass; it was a Grass Field created by Grass-type energy! Ye Ci looked up abruptly, and she saw that the entire mountain was covered in a layer of green light.
As the wind blew, the countless blades of grass swayed gently in the breeze.
Ye Ci: "?"
A question mark appeared in the mind of the Champion.
Seeing this, Jun Sha took the initiative to explain, "The Grass Field here is also a move used by that trainer's Pokemon. Although I didn't see it myself, Joy told me that it was three Gogoat."
Jun Sha's face showed a grateful smile as she continued, "Thanks to them, the rescue team had more time to work."
Ye Ci understood what Jun Sha meant without needing further explanation.
Grass Field... This was a move that could restore the stamina of Pokemon.
She remained calm on the surface, but her heart was shocked.
What kind of Pokemon could use Grass Field on such a large scale? Coincidentally, she also had a Gogoat in her team.
Could her Gogoat do the same? Ye Ci asked herself.
She couldn't.
"What kind of person is he?" Ye Ci asked.
Jun Sha recalled Naoki and couldn't help but smile as she thought of his usually serious demeanor. "He's a very gentle person. He loves Pokemon and runs a ranch here. Oh, by the way, although I haven't seen those three Gogoat, I have drunk their milk."
"Not just me, but everyone in town has heard of those three Gogoat because their milk can make people healthier."
Ye Ci was stunned. "...A ranch owner?"
She decided that she would pay him a visit later.
But for now, they had more pressing matters to attend to.
"Come on, keep it up!" Naoki encouraged the three Gogoat who were still maintaining the Grass Field, cheering them on while feeding them Grass Dumplings.
In just half an hour, with the help of the Grass Field, many wild Pokemon had regained some of their strength.
They emerged from their hiding places, only to be spotted by the patrolling Babo and Gurled, who brought them to Naoki.
Now, in addition to the initial Electabuzz and Lileep, there were quite a few injured Pokemon gathered here.
Two Jumpluff, a Throh, two Swirlix, three Foongus, and a completely charred Slakoth.
In addition to these, Gurled had also brought back some Pokemon who had lost their lives in the fire.
Seeing the motionless, blackened Woobat and Decidueye lying on the ground, everyone present fell silent.
Naoki tried to treat Woobat with his most effective recovery dishes, but to no avail.
They had lost their lives completely, and unless an Articuno was present, no one could bring them back.
Gurled and Motostoke Sadpedro hung their heads in sadness.
Glaceon felt a lump in her throat.
Babo floated in the air, his voice somber, "Ba..."
Naoki sighed and said, "What we can do now is to give them a proper burial and let them rest in peace."
There were no specific places for Pokemon funerals like the Pokemon Tower or the Pokemon Memorial in the Padia region, so they could only find a suitable spot in the forest to lay them to rest.
At that moment, the three Gogoat finally reached their limit, and the grass on the ground turned into specks of light and disappeared.
"You've done well! Now, go and get some rest!" Naoki patted their heads gently.
The other Pokemon continued to search for injured Pokemon, but after a while, they still couldn't find any.
Naoki thought that perhaps the Pokemon in the nearby area had already fled in advance.
Seeing this, he called off the search and rescue operation and found a patch of land untouched by the fire. There, he dug a few holes and buried the deceased Pokemon.
Electabuzz, Foongus, Throh, and the other Pokemon watched with sad expressions on their faces.
Naoki consoled them, "Don't worry, they haven't truly died. Their souls have merely left their physical bodies to start a new life, and their bodies will eventually return to the earth."
Naoki played the role of a priest, holding a simple funeral for these Pokemon.
Afterward, he turned to the group of Pokemon behind him and said, "For the time being, you can stay with me. I'll provide enough food for all of you to get through this winter."
Hearing this, the group of Pokemon lowered their heads, their expressions gloomy.
They were aware of their predicament; without help, even if they had survived the fire, they wouldn't have made it through the harsh winter ahead.
The fire had taken everything from them.
No food, no shelter.
Chestnut the Patrat started wailing again, its cheeks puffed out in distress.
Its tree hole! All those chestnuts and berries it had stored!
Naoki: "..."
He sighed and said, "Follow me! Come to my place, and next spring, I'll replant the trees here and help all of you rebuild your homes."
Hearing that their homes could be rebuilt, the group of Pokemon immediately looked up with hopeful eyes.
"Chuu?" asked a pair of Plusle and Minun.
Naoki couldn't understand them, but from their expressions, he guessed they were asking if he was serious.
He nodded, "Of course, I'll plant the saplings here, and before long, they'll grow into towering trees again. Then you can return to the forest and live in your rebuilt homes."
The group of Pokemon finally looked a little more cheerful.
They gazed at the man in front of them with grateful and touched expressions.
"Let's go!"
Naoki began walking back to the ranch, with a trail of small followers behind him.
Along the way, Naoki ran into Miss Jun Sha, who was riding her motorcycle.
She had been on her way back from the Pokemon Center, where she had gone to get more Potions for Joy, and upon seeing Naoki and the trail of dirty, dejected Pokemon following him, she nodded as if she had expected this.
What champion? He was taken aback for a moment before realizing that Ye Ci also intended to pay him a visit.
Seeing the expression on his face, Miss Jun Sha smiled and said, "Don't be nervous. The Chief Champion doesn't put on any airs; she's quite approachable."
Naoki thought to himself that he wasn't nervous, just surprised.
As she had other matters to attend to, Miss Jun Sha didn't linger. After a brief chat, she turned her attention to the group of wild Pokemon behind Naoki:
"Search and rescue teams from other cities have arrived, and the townspeople have organized a Pokemon rescue squad. The League has distributed a large number of supplies, and until the ecosystem of the back mountain recovers, the rescue squad will be responsible for taking care of the Pokemon there. You can send these Pokemon to the rescue squad if you'd like."
Naoki shook his head. "Never mind that, I'll take care of these Pokemon myself. They're more familiar with me, and the orchard had a good harvest this autumn, so I can afford to feed them."
"Alright then," said Jun Sha.
With that, Miss Jun Sha hurried off.
Naoki, too, returned to the ranch with the group of Pokemon.
The Ride Gogoat had worked the hardest that day.
As soon as he returned to the ranch, Naoki filled their trough with Grass Dumplings.
The Ride Gogoat sniffed the aroma of the Grass Dumplings and bleated eagerly, crowding around the trough and gobbling up the dumplings to replenish their Grass-type energy.
Naoki clapped his hands and put away the basket.
Next was the issue of shelter and food for this group of Pokemon.
Including the previously rescued Patrat, Klefki, Plusle and Minun, Throh, Trubbish, and Electabuzz, there were sixteen refugee Pokemon in total.
Naoki had also wanted to include the Pidgeot, but it had flown off somewhere and couldn't be found.
Food was easy to solve; the orchard had yielded an abundance of tree fruit in the autumn, and those fruits could be stored to help these Pokemon through the coming winter.
As for shelter...
Naoki thought for a moment, then went to the storeroom of the old house and fetched a hammer and saw. He began constructing sturdy and aesthetically pleasing wooden houses for the Pokemon using wood planks and nails.
These houses, of varying sizes, were installed by Naoki in the tree orchard.
The Pidgeot preferred to live in high places, so Naoki secured its nest on top of one of the tree fruit trees.
The other Pokemon had no particular requests, so Naoki placed their nests under different fruit trees.
Walking through the orchard, one could spot a small wooden house built for the smaller Pokemon every few trees.
Additionally, Naoki lined the insides of the houses with special windproof and insulated materials and laid a thick, fluffy blanket on the floor.
Once the nests were complete, the Hoarder Patrat was the first to give it a try.
It scurried into the cozy nest, and its bald tail, burned bare by the fire, could clearly feel the softness and comfort of the blanket beneath it, causing the Hoarder Patrat to let out a satisfied sigh.
This nest was even more perfect than its previous tree hole.
It could almost imagine how comfortable it would be to hide in this nest during the winter when snow blanketed the outside world.
Seeing the expression on the Hoarder Patrat's face, Naoki couldn't help but smile. "If you like it, I can make you another one in the back mountain once it's been rebuilt."
Upon hearing this, the Hoarder Patrat's face lit up with delight.
"Alright, you relax here, and I'll go check on the other Pokemon," Naoki said.
He strolled through the orchard, inspecting the Pokemon.
The Pidgeot, Plusle and Minun, Throh, Swirlix, Grasswhistle, Thwackey, and Foongus, among others, were all very satisfied with their wooden houses and grateful to Naoki for providing them with a refuge.
Noticing their sentiments, Naoki smiled but didn't say much, merely telling them to make themselves at home.
Then, he approached the Electabuzz.
Due to its size, the Electabuzz wasn't suited to live in the wooden houses.
Thus, Naoki had no choice but to send it to live with the Salazzle and Diglett in the underground cave system.
The cave had an underground lake, and given its distance from the surface, the temperature remained warm even in winter, making it an ideal place for the Electabuzz to spend the colder months.
Only after settling all the Pokemon did Naoki finally have some time to himself.
He stood in the ranch and suddenly remembered the sleeping Klefki in the house. Hurriedly, he turned and walked inside to check on the Klefki's condition.
