Chapter 222: Obito's Training Mission Conclusion
Chapter 222: Obito's Training Mission Conclusion
"I really lost." Kakashi Hatake, held at knifepoint by Obito Uchiha's kunai, felt a moment of dizziness as Mu Yue declared Obito's victory.
Just six months ago, when Obito had come to him for help with his body technique practice, Kakashi could have easily defeated him with his Lightning Body Flicker Technique.
Six months was a long time—translating to one hundred and eighty-one days. Yet, it also felt short to Kakashi, who still remembered his numerous effortless victories over Obito not long ago.
Kakashi, who had never lost to anyone his age, had lost thrice in just over a month.
He had lost to his rival, Might Guy, who had been tirelessly working to surpass him. He had also lost to the even more gifted Uchiha Itachi. And today, he had lost to Obito Uchiha, who had been defeated by him countless times before.
In all three of these losses, Kakashi acknowledged his opponents' well-deserved victories. They had not won by luck but by their own skills and strength.
However, accepting defeat did not diminish his desire to win. In fact, he felt a strong reluctance to accept his decline. Initially, Might Guy and Obito had been far inferior to him, and Itachi was even younger than him by two years.
"Don't get too cocky," Kakashi said, brushing off the dust from his clothes. "You've only beaten me once, and I've beaten you countless times before. I'll be back on top soon enough." He glared at Obito's arrogant smile.
He admitted his failure but refused to accept a permanent state of defeat. He knew the reason for his losses—he had become too lax in the past two years, entangled in the so-called missions and rules of a ninja, neglecting his own cultivation.
Now, things were different. Kakashi intended to be true to himself. He didn't seek everyone's approval; he only needed to stay true to his beliefs.
"Save your big talk," Obito retorted, unperturbed by Kakashi's harsh words. "Going up against me with the Sharingan—you never had a chance." He continued to smile triumphantly.
Although he had only won once, he felt that this single victory was more valuable than all of Kakashi's previous wins combined.
"We'll see about that," Kakashi replied, a slight smirk hidden behind his mask.
This time would be different. He would show Obito and Might Guy the incredible growth rate of a genius.
With his extraordinary talent and Mu Yue's guidance, Kakashi believed his strength would soar in no time.
Mu Yue smiled at the determined expressions on their faces. It was good to have ambition and a goal; their strength would increase rapidly.
[Disciple Uchiha Obito's Training Complete. Rewards: Chakra +2500, Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu (Mastery), Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Claw Red (Proficiency).]
Another reward of 2,500 chakra points. Mu Yue was now only 4,000 points away from her 50,000-point goal.
Although it was the Fireball Jutsu, a mastery-level ninjutsu was always welcome.
[Disciple Uchiha Obito has received an optional Life Mission.]
[Life Mission: It is not that one becomes the Hokage to be acknowledged, but that one is acknowledged to become the Hokage.]
[Main Objective: Become the Hokage of Konohagakure.]
[Mission Progress: 0%]
[Mission Rewards: Dependent on mission completion rate and strength growth during the mission. Rewards will be calculated and distributed every 10% progress.]
[Note 1: Mission will automatically fail if Uchiha Obito defects from the village or if Konohagakure is destroyed.]
[Note 2: Life Missions are extremely challenging. Once accepted, the next Life Mission can only be undertaken after completion. Choose wisely.]
[Note 3: The greater the difficulty, the greater the reward.]
Mu Yue contemplated Obito's Life Mission. It wasn't an easy task, but it wasn't impossible either.
If Minato became the Fourth Hokage and didn't meet an untimely end, and if Danzo's faction targeting the Uchiha clan was eliminated, there was a chance for Obito to become the Hokage.
After some thought, Mu Yue decided to accept this mission. Although she felt that Obito might trigger another mission in the future—one that could bring an end to the ninja wars and establish peace—this mission could be linked to Itachi's.
If Obito became the Hokage, the conflict between the Uchiha clan and Konoha could be resolved.
Moreover, Mu Yue sensed that the progress of this mission would increase rapidly.
With the position of Hokage as the ultimate goal, Obito's promotion and popularity among the people on the battlefield would likely contribute to the mission's progress, as these were essential steps towards becoming the Hokage.
In addition to Obito triggering a Life Mission, Kakashi also successfully triggered a Training Mission.
[Disciple Kakashi Hatake's Training Mission:]
[Defeat Uchiha Obito, Uchiha Itachi, and Might Guy in combat, and become the strongest among Mu Yue's disciples.]
Mu Yue could only say that this task was a bit challenging. While the gap between them wasn't significant at the moment, Kakashi's diligent training, along with Tobirama and Might Guy's efforts, meant they wouldn't be slacking off mysteriously.
Unless Kakashi suddenly had a breakthrough in his breathing techniques, it would be difficult for him to overtake the others in a short time.
"Lin, I was amazing earlier, wasn't I?" Tobirama couldn't help but ask, approaching Haruno Lin.
"You were incredible! Defeating Kakashi like that, your classmates would be so surprised if they knew," Haruno Lin exclaimed, full of admiration.
If it weren't for Might Guy's precedent, Haruno Lin would have been even more astonished.
Kakashi's performance during their time at the Ninja Academy had been crushingly dominant, leaving a deep impression on Haruno Lin.
"It's not that big of a deal," Tobirama replied, his pride swelling. "Now that I've unlocked the Sharingan, defeating Kakashi is only natural." With Haruno Lin's praise, Tobirama's ego inflated further, and he began to feel a sense of superiority.
"The power of the Sharingan, huh? Tobirama, once I can consistently open the second gate, I'd like to experience the power of the Sharingan myself," Might Guy said passionately.
"Uh..." Tobirama's soaring ego suddenly stabilized. If his opponent were Might Guy, he didn't feel very confident about winning.
While Kakashi's burst speed was impressive, it only lasted for a moment. In contrast, Might Guy, with his Eight Gates and Rock Breathing, could maintain high speed and power throughout the entire battle.
"Haha, let's talk about that later. I need to get more familiar with the Sharingan's power first," Tobirama hedged, neither refusing nor agreeing.
He didn't want to refuse outright in front of Haruno Lin, as it would make him seem afraid of Might Guy. But if he agreed, there was a good chance he'd end up embarrassed.
"The second gate..." Standing beside them, Gengetsu felt a growing sense of urgency as he listened. It seemed that Kakashi, Tobirama, and Gengetsu had all made small breakthroughs during this trip.
After resting until 1:30 in the afternoon, they resumed their training. Tobirama and Gengetsu practiced the All-Directional Breathing, Might Guy did recovery training, and Kakashi continued his efforts to master the basics.
"Teacher Mu Yue, I've combined the Lightning Breathing with my family's sword technique to create a new move, but it has some drawbacks. Can you help me take a look at it?" Kakashi asked Mu Yue during their training.
One reason he had lost to Tobirama was the limitations of his Thunder Flash technique. Once his opponent saw through his attack trajectory, it was challenging to make it work, and the speed that didn't match his reaction time left him unable to react to counterattacks.
"Go ahead and show it to me," Mu Yue nodded.
"Thank you." Kakashi expressed his gratitude and then drew his White Fang, altering his breathing rhythm as he prepared to strike.
"Thunder Flash!"
Whoosh!
Lightning crackled around Kakashi's feet, and with a thunderous roar, he shot forward like a bolt of lightning parallel to the ground.
Boom!
The tree that Kakashi had targeted toppled instantly.
"Are you having trouble reacting to your own speed?" Mu Yue asked thoughtfully.
Mu Yue felt that Kakashi might have a talent in this regard. He had already given Kakashi the Purple Electricity technique, which didn't require the Sharingan, and now Kakashi had come up with another skill that seemed to outpace his reaction time.
"Yes, and I feel like this technique is too linear. If my opponent figures it out, it won't be effective," Kakashi admitted.
"Don't worry about the attack trajectory for now. When you become stronger, if one flash doesn't work, you can always flash multiple times in succession," Mu Yue said, addressing the heart of the issue. "The more critical problem is your reaction time."
"There are two fundamental solutions to this. One is to master the technique of using Lightning-attribute chakra nature to enhance your nerves, which will improve your reaction speed. The second is to master the ultimate insight of the breathing technique and attain the 'Clear World' state."
"You can learn how to enhance your nerves once you reach the 'Constantly Active' level in Lightning Breathing."
"Constantly Active..." Kakashi was familiar with this term, as Tobirama and Gengetsu were currently training in this area.
"So, how do I attain the 'Clear World' state?" Kakashi asked thoughtfully.
As far as he knew, Tobirama and the others had been practicing their breathing techniques for half a year, and they had only just begun their "Constantly Active" training. He wondered when they would complete their training and how long it would take for him to reach the "Constantly Active" level himself. Kakashi dared not imagine how arrogant Tobirama would become in the year it might take.
"I can't say for sure," Mu Yue replied. "It depends on your personal enlightenment. Some people may practice breathing techniques their entire lives and never master it, while others may be born with a natural understanding.
The difference in difficulty between nature transformation and ninjutsu, for instance, was immense, and there was also a significant gap between advanced and basic ninjutsu.
Once the Lightning Breathing technique reached perfection, Kakashi's issues would be a thing of the past. Not only would Thunder Flash pose no problem, but even ten consecutive flashes would be effortlessly executed.
Of course, as a master of breathing techniques, Mu Yue was aware that it was possible to attain the 'Clear World' state without perfecting the breathing technique. However, he felt that this was even more challenging than achieving perfection in the breathing technique itself.
It was no longer a matter of compatibility with the technique but rather possessing an exceptional innate talent for breathing techniques.
"Is it that difficult? I may never master it in my lifetime," Kakashi said, surprised by Mu Yue's response.
"That's why it's considered the ultimate technique of breathing control," Mu Yue smiled. He then prepared to demonstrate the power of the 'Clear World' state to Kakashi.
"Attack me."
Without hesitation, Kakashi swung his blade towards Mu Yue.
"You're aiming for my left arm," Mu Yue stated as soon as Kakashi's blade began its arc, effortlessly dodging the attack.
"Your next target is my thigh."
"Now, you're going for my heart."
Mu Yue continued to predict each of Kakashi's subsequent attacks with uncanny accuracy, moving with a speed that, while not overwhelming, kept him just out of Kakashi's reach.
Kakashi's expression grew more astonished by the second. Mu Yue's ability was astonishingly powerful.
Without relying on physical prowess or an abundance of chakra, Mu Yue effortlessly evaded all of Kakashi's attacks solely through his extraordinary reactions.
"This is merely one of the abilities of the 'Clear World' state. It also enables you to see through your opponent's weaknesses and bring out your full potential," Mu Yue explained.
Just listening to Mu Yue's description sparked a strong desire within Kakashi to attain this formidable ability.
If he could master this power, Obito's Sharingan would be no threat.
"If one day you experience a sense of transparency in your mind, allowing you to see and control every muscle and blood vessel in your body, then you will have entered the 'Clear World' state," Mu Yue described, giving Kakashi a glimpse of what it felt like to unlock this ability.
Kakashi's expression turned serious as he committed Mu Yue's words to memory.
"While it may not be possible to completely cure your issue in a short time, there are ways to alleviate it to some extent. You can undergo special training to enhance your reaction capabilities," Mu Yue continued.
Reaction capabilities could indeed be enhanced through training, but there was a limit to how far one could go. Expecting to reach the level of Namikaze Minato or the Fourth Raikage was unrealistic, but it was possible to enhance reactions to a respectable degree.
"In battle, if the timing isn't right, it's best to avoid using it. And even when you do use it, limit yourself to once or twice per fight," Mu Yue advised.
Obito's ability to counter Kakashi's Thunder Flash was due to his Sharingan, as well as the fact that he had witnessed the technique once before, giving him prior knowledge.
"Thank you for your guidance. I know what I need to do," Kakashi nodded gratefully.
"Keep pushing forward. If you can unlock your true potential, you will one day master the 'Clear World' as well," Mu Yue encouraged.
Offering words of encouragement cost nothing, and Mu Yue enjoyed motivating his disciples. While it might be difficult, there was always a chance they would succeed.
Inspired by the desire to defeat Obito, Kakashi threw himself wholeheartedly into his training of the Lightning Breathing technique.
"Teacher Mu Yue, I'd like to accompany you on missions next year as well," Gengetsu approached Mu Yue after the training session and expressed his wish.
"I feel the need for some real-world experience outside the village," Gengetsu explained, having witnessed the significant growth in strength of Obito and his team through their missions.
"If I'm still in charge of internships next year, that won't be a problem," Mu Yue agreed.
Indeed, Gengetsu needed to experience real combat to grow stronger, and if all went well, by the third semester of the next academic year, his chakra should surpass 70,000, making it safer for him to venture out.
4k words, with another 3k to go. I'm considering buying some melatonin to help with my sleep schedule; it's getting a bit challenging to maintain a consistent sleep pattern. Went to bed at 11:30 PM yesterday but couldn't fall asleep until after 2:00 AM.
