Chapter 221: The Wandering Pokemon
Chapter 221: The Wandering Pokemon
"Hmm? What are you doing here, Mr. Naoki?"
Miss Joy had noticed Naoki and Golurk standing by the side. She knew Naoki, as his ranch was quite famous in this seaside town, and she had also visited the ranch before to examine her riding goat. Over time, she had become acquainted with the gentle young ranch owner.
Naoki explained, "My ranch is nearby, and I came to help out."
The tall and robust fire captain thanked Naoki, "We were able to get the fire under control quickly, thanks to your help."
Miss Joy looked puzzled. After Junsher explained the situation to her, she exclaimed, "Ah?"
So, Mr. Naoki is such an amazing trainer? Miss Joy thought to herself.
She was surprised but then recalled the three grass-type riding goats with exceptional power that she had seen during her last visit to the ranch, and it didn't seem so strange anymore.
After some small talk, everyone turned their attention back to the mountain behind, shrouded in the rain.
Miss Junsher frowned, her serious face looking even more solemn.
The fire captain and his crew also wore worried expressions, waiting for the fire to be completely extinguished before they could begin their rescue mission into the mountain.
Miss Joy, with her hands clasped together, prayed, "I hope the Pokemon living in the mountain will be safe..."
It would take some time for the rain to stop.
Everyone gathered under the car shed, looking weary and taking a seat to rest.
Naoki sat beside Golurk, his eyes scanning the front, observing the fire brigade of this world.
Just as he had expected, the fire brigade here consisted of humans and Water-type Pokemon.
Among them were the commonly seen Psyducks, Golducks evolved from Poliwags, the lovable Quagsires, the spaced-out Slowbros, and the fierce-looking Gyarados...
Naoki also spotted a familiar Pokemon—the festive duck Pokemon that often came to his tavern for a drink.
Miss Junsher stood beside him and, noticing his expression, said, "Some of these Pokemon live in the wild, and after being rescued by the fire brigade, they stay to help out."
Naoki nodded and then discussed the upcoming rescue operations with Miss Junsher.
"You'll be heading into the mountain to rescue the wild Pokemon once the rain stops, right?"
Miss Junsher affirmed, "In a fire of this scale, the Pokemon can't get through this crisis on their own. It will take time for the mountain to recover its original look, so we must lend a helping hand."
Naoki had intended to mention Lecrown, but thinking about it, he wasn't yet confident about bringing Lecrown to their side completely, so he changed the topic.
"I have a lot of Berries stored in my ranch. If you need more rescue resources, feel free to contact me."
He wanted to help as much as he could.
Hearing this, Miss Junsher was slightly taken aback but then smiled, "Thank you, but you've already been a great help. The Pactia League will be providing us with relief supplies, and I believe the Chief Champion, Yazhi, will also come over since such an incident has occurred."
Yazhi...
Naoki noticed the admiration in Miss Junsher's tone and thought that the people of Pactia must hold the Chief Champion in high regard.
At that moment, Miss Junsher's Vulpix let out a pitiful whine.
Naoki turned to see the fluffy Vulpix soaked in the rain, its paw pads caked with mud.
The sad-looking Vulpix sat beside Miss Junsher, lowering its head to look at its dirty self.
Naoki couldn't help but comfort it, "Don't be sad. Once we're done here, you can go back and get cleaned up."
The Vulpix looked up at him and then happily barked twice, "Vulpix!"
"It really likes you!" Miss Junsher exclaimed in surprise.
Naoki thought for a moment and replied, "Maybe it's because I treated it to a fruit juice milkshake?"
The Vulpix wagged its tail excitedly, "Vulpix!"
Witnessing this scene, Naoki felt a tingling sensation in his heart.
The fluffy, warm, and affectionate Vulpix—he really wanted to raise one, too!
But it seemed like Vulpix Pokemon were only available to the Junsher family.
In this world, Vulpix and Ninetales were symbols of the Junsher family, and almost every Miss Junsher had a Vulpix by her side.
Was it a monopoly? Naoki didn't think so because he had never heard of any rumors that the Junsher family prohibited trainers from raising Vulpix Pokemon.
Moreover, some traveling trainers also had Vulpix Pokemon with them.
After all, it was impossible for a single family to control an entire species of Pokemon. Take the case of Natsu's Dragon-Riding family; they didn't monopolize all the Dragonite in the world.
Perhaps it was because of the Vulpix Pokemon's loyal, reliable, and intelligent nature?
Noticing his stare, she turned and asked, "Is there something the matter?"
Naoki snapped out of his reverie and replied, "It's just that every Miss Junsher I've met looks exactly the same."
Hearing this, Miss Junsher couldn't help but chuckle. "That's true. The Junsher family is quite extraordinary; every girl born into the family looks like a Junsher, and it's likely due to our identical genes. It's the same for the Joy family as well."
Naoki glanced at Miss Joy, who was busy in the distance.
Miss Junsher continued, "However, we're not completely identical. There are some Junshers and Joys with darker skin who live in tropical regions, probably due to geographical influences."
"That's amazing," Naoki remarked.
Speaking on the topic, Miss Junsher's expression grew distant. "If I had a choice, I wouldn't want to look like this. Outsiders always confuse me with other Junshers."
Naoki fell silent at her words.
This reminded him of Tracey, who had traveled with Ash in the Pokemon anime.
Tracey had the remarkable ability to tell Joys and Junshers apart.
Gradually, the fire that engulfed the mountain retreated, the downpour ceased, and the sky began to brighten.
In the morning light, a Haxorus descended slowly from the sky and landed beside Naoki.
The surrounding firefighters' eyes lit up at the sight of the Haxorus.
"Is this the Haxorus that stopped the fire?"
"What a powerful Haxorus!"
"It's the town's savior! We must express our gratitude!"
Even the Water-type Pokemon looked on in admiration.
The fire captain stepped forward, representing the entire fire brigade, and bowed solemnly to the Haxorus. "Thank you for your hard work, Haxorus! We are deeply grateful for your assistance."
Amidst the outpouring of gratitude and admiration, the Haxorus seemed pleased but also a bit embarrassed.
"Rao!" it called out twice to the group.
The fire captain looked perplexed and turned to Naoki for clarification.
Naoki smiled and interpreted, "It's saying that it's only doing what it should, as it's also a part of this community."
"Rao!" the Haxorus nodded vigorously.
The tough-looking man's eyes softened as he regarded the Haxorus with appreciation.
"Well done, Haxorus! Nonetheless, we must express our sincere thanks."
"Rao~" the Haxorus responded.
Now wasn't the time for idle chatter.
The fire had left behind a trail of devastation.
What was once a lush mountainside was now reduced to black ashes and charred trees.
The firefighters sprang back into action, joining forces with Miss Junsher and Miss Joy to search for any surviving Pokemon within the mountain.
Naoki watched with Haxorus and Golurk for a while, and soon enough, they spotted Pokemon being carried out on stretchers and taken to Miss Joy's ambulance for emergency treatment.
The sight weighed heavily on the hearts of those present.
Naoki sighed and turned to Golurk and Haxorus. "Let's go."
There wasn't much they could do here, and their abrupt departure earlier had likely worried the other Pokemon.
With Haxorus and Golurk in tow, Naoki hurried back to the ranch.
As expected, when he arrived, he found a group of worried Pokemon waiting for him: Axew, the Servine siblings, Glaceon, and others.
Naoki quickly reassured them, "It's alright, there's no need to worry."
The Pokemon breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Naoki patted each of their heads affectionately, intending to send them back to rest. However, he was suddenly interrupted by a flustered Palossand rushing towards him from a distance.
It pointed towards the chicken coop and exclaimed, "Baba!"
"Hmm?" Naoki furrowed his brow. "What's wrong?"
Without the translation berry, he couldn't understand the Pokemon's words, but Palossand's demeanor suggested that something was amiss with the chickens, perhaps a wild animal attack.
Palossand tugged on his arm, urging him to come and see.
Naoki followed Palossand to the chicken coop, which was situated by the river that flowed through the ranch.
Just then, he spotted something being swept downstream by the river's current.
As he focused his gaze, he realized it wasn't trash but a group of dirty and bedraggled Pokemon! They looked panicked as they struggled in the water.
Without hesitation, Naoki signaled for the Servine siblings to assist.
The two Servines nodded and stepped forward to the riverbank. They extended their hands, and a blue light appeared in their eyes.
Sister Ai Guanshi gently patted the back of a hungry Patrat.
Naoki stood aside, surveying the group of Pokemon.
In addition to the Patrat, there were five other Pokemon: a Grubbin, a Tympole, a Bronzor, an Archen, and a pair of Patrat, one larger than the other.
Each Pokemon looked utterly bedraggled, their bodies bearing burn marks, and their faces and fur caked with black soot.
It was clear that they had escaped from the fire.
They had probably tried to seek refuge in the river to escape the flames, only to be swept downstream by the swift current.
After a moment's thought, Naoki instructed his brother, Ai Guanshi, "Go get me the burn medicine."
"Ai Yi," his brother acknowledged calmly, nodding and dashing back into the house to retrieve several bottles of burn spray from the medical kit.
Naoki approached the timid Tympole, its body weak but alert, and said, "Don't be afraid. I mean you no harm. You're injured, and I'm here to help."
As he spoke, Naoki held up the burn medicine for the Tympole to see.
Sensing the human's good intentions, Tympole lowered its guard.
Naoki sprayed the burn medicine all over Tympole's body and then moved on to the rotund Grubbin.
Unlike the cautious Tympole, Grubbin was still trembling in fear, its plump body shaking.
As Naoki drew closer, the Grubbin suddenly tensed, its belly glowing as a strong electric current surged from its Electric Sac. The electricity enveloped its body, a defensive mechanism.
Naoki tried to soothe the Pokemon, "Grubbin? Grubbin, don't be scared. There's no danger here. You're safe now."
Grubbin remained stiff, shivering with fear, still on guard.
Naoki was at a loss for a moment, unsure how to approach the Pokemon with its body surrounded by electricity.
Just then, Babuto stepped forward, eager to help.
It flew to Grubbin's side, releasing a current of electricity from the electric sacs on its cheeks.
The current met Grubbin's electricity, creating a crackling sound.
Initially surprised, Naoki soon realized that this was a primary means of communication among Electric-type Pokemon.
They exchanged currents as a way of greeting and expressing friendship.
Indeed, with Babuto's reassurance, Grubbin gradually relaxed its tense body.
It uncurled itself, using its tiny yellow eyes to cautiously scan its surroundings.
Naoki smiled at it reassuringly, "Relax, I'll heal you."
This time, Grubbin didn't resist, and its burns were successfully healed.
The third Pokemon was the Archen, tilting its head with a goofy expression.
Naoki had thought this silly-looking Archen would be easier to approach, but before he could get close, it flapped its wings and flew away, soon disappearing from sight.
"?" Naoki was puzzled.
Helpless, he turned his attention to the remaining Pokemon.
The Patrat had encountered humans before and seemed relatively friendly, so it didn't resist like Grubbin.
Its treatment went smoothly, though its fur was burned bald, leaving it looking rather pitiful.
The pair of Patrat consisted of a large and small one, the smaller one hiding behind the larger. The smaller Patrat didn't have many wounds, but the larger one was severely injured.
They eyed the human and the group of formidable-looking Pokemon warily.
Naoki knelt down, holding out his hands to show he meant no harm, "Don't be afraid. I'll help treat your wounds."
The pair of Patrat glanced at each other and then cautiously stepped forward after witnessing Naoki treating the other Pokemon.
Naoki sprayed the burn medicine on the larger Patrat's back and praised, "You're a very reliable husband."
"Chi, chi," the Patrat pair squeaked.
"There, all done. You're good to go now."
Naoki poked the two little ones with his fingers and then moved on to the Bronzor.
Unlike the Bronzor he had seen before, this one didn't have its hammer, either having lost it during its escape or not having had time to forge one.
At that moment, Bronzor was doing its best to crane its neck to look up at Naoki.
Naoki smiled gently and was about to greet it when, to his surprise, Bronzor suddenly collapsed, falling into unconsciousness.
