Chapter 220: A Trap to Die For?
Chapter 220: A Trap to Die For?
"Duel!" x2
[You Xuan, LP: 4000]
[Bishop, LP: 4000]
"It looks like I'll be taking the first turn." Bishop hummed lowly.
"My turn, draw." He glanced at his hand and quickly drew a card. "I activate the Magic Card, 'Pot of Avarice and Humility.' I reveal the top three cards of my Deck, add one of them to my hand, and shuffle the rest back into my Deck."
You Xuan narrowed his eyes. So it was the legendary Pot of Greed and Stinginess? Back in the day, when real cards transitioned from the Synchro to Xyz era, the treatment of this card was almost on par with the ancient Pot of Greed—it was a staple in virtually every competitive Deck.
Although the Pot of Greed and Stinginess had the restriction of not being able to Special Summon during the turn it was activated, it was entirely acceptable given the game's pace at the time.
In fact, You Xuan had searched for every card with the character "jar" on the market, so he knew that the Pot of Greed and Pot of Avarice hadn't been released yet. However, it seemed that the Kaiba Corporation and the International Dueling Society ( likely referring to the International Dueling League or a similar organization, as there isn't an 'International Illusion Society' in the series) already had inside information, and it was possibly a new card that hadn't been made public yet.
You Xuan nodded slightly. As expected, he could recognize the card's alias, and it certainly looked like an elite monster. He now had something more valuable than the mediocre cards in the underground fortress.
Actually, the Pot of Greed and Stinginess might not even be necessary for his current Deck, but since it was free, it wouldn't hurt to keep one on hand.
Devil Bishop drew three cards from the top of his Deck in one breath, then hooked his lips and hummed, "Hmm, it seems your luck isn't very good. You flipped such a powerful card right away."
He then displayed one of the cards: "Now, according to the effect of the 'Pot of Avarice and Humility,' I choose this powerful Trap Card, 'Blast Held by a Tribute,' to add to my hand!"
You Xuan: "."
Well, what can I say?
It's indeed a powerful Trap Card.
In every sense of the word.
"Then I activate the Magic Card, 'Pot of Greed,' to draw two cards." Bishop drew some cards. "Then I Summon 'Lion-Headed Crocodilus'!"
[Lion-Headed Crocodilus, ATK: 1900]
"Next, I Set two cards in my Spell & Trap Zones. My turn is over." Bishop declared.
You Xuan glanced at the monster on his opponent's field.
Crocodilus, and it's not even a Fiend-type... He then recalled that since entering the door, his opponent had been using Water-Attribute-based Spell Cards, starting with a Water-Attribute spell.
"I see, a Water-Attribute wizard, so you're using a Water-Attribute Deck." You Xuan understood, "My turn, draw.
I activate the Quick-Play Spell Card, 'Hand Destruction,' from my hand. Each player discards two cards, then draws two cards."
Devil Bishop selected two cards from his hand and discarded them, humming softly.
"It seems your hand isn't ideal. It's not too late to surrender now."
You Xuan paid him no mind and drew five more cards in one breath.
"I Set five cards in my Spell & Trap Zones. My turn is over."
Devil Bishop: "?"
Death Lord: "?"
No Summoned monsters?
And he started with five Set cards?
What's his strategy here?
"Even after replacing your hand, you didn't draw any monsters to Summon?" Devil Bishop scoffed, "So you're just a jumping clown, after all. It's unlikely to encounter any strong Duelists in a place like this anyway."
Death Lord spoke in a deep voice, "Be careful. I have a bad feeling about this kid."
The count tended to keep to himself in the underground fortress, and he hadn't witnessed You Xuan's Duel in the square. But from his opponent's composure, his confident decision to end his turn without setting up any monsters despite having five Set cards in his backrow, he instinctively sensed that something was amiss.
"Calm down, Count. He's just a small fry. I can take care of him in a couple of moves." Bishop declared, "My turn, draw!
I activate the Quick-Play Spell, 'Dust Tornado,' to destroy one of your Set Spell/Trap Cards."
"In response to Dust Tornado, I activate my Set card, the Trap Card, 'Pandora's Notes.' When my opponent activates a card or effect that targets a card in my Spell/Trap Zone, I can change the target to this card instead. Then I draw two cards from my Deck." (Original card effect)
"What?"
Bishop frowned as he watched his Dust Tornado envelop You Xuan's Pandora's Notes. You Xuan then drew cards from his Deck.
"Tch, so you even have a countermeasure for my backrow."
Devil Bishop pouted in displeasure.
"In that case, I activate the Magic Card, 'Burial from a Different Dimension,' to banish three Magic Cards, 'Pot of Greed,' 'Dust Tornado,' and 'Pot of Avarice and Humility,' from my Graveyard and draw two cards from my Deck.
"So, you want to take advantage of my draw effect, huh?" Bishop frowned.
As he spoke, images of three Magic Cards appeared and turned into golden specks of light that drifted away. Devil Bishop drew two cards.
Glancing at the cards he drew, Bishop immediately revealed one of them.
"Now, the effect of this monster in my hand, 'Aqua Elf, Akuaeria'! This card can be Special Summoned by removing from play a Water-Attribute monster in my Graveyard! I remove the Water-Attribute monster discarded last turn due to your 'Hand Destruction' effect and Special Summon Akuaeria!"
A vortex to the Graveyard opened, and a monster card emerged from it, only to be sucked into a swirling vortex of water and disappear. A burst of water erupted on the field, and a wise-looking elf girl with aquamarine hair stepped out from the watery curtain.
[Aqua Elf, Akuaeria, ATK: 1600]
The girl's eyes sparkled with intelligence, giving her the appearance of a clever elf.
Of course, You Xuan wasn't about to go easy on her just because she looked like a smart and cute girl. He casually waved his hand and said, "Then, I reveal this face-down card, the Trap Card, 'Lightning Blast'. It negates the Special Summon of an opponent's monster and destroys it." (Original Card)
A pitch-black lightning bolt struck Akuaeria, who screamed as she was blasted by the dark lightning and exploded into smithereens.
"Damn it, how dare you treat Akuaeria like that!"
Devil Bishop seemed infuriated.
"Then, I Summon 'Sea Scaled Serpent'!"
The serpent was entirely covered in vibrant red scales, its body resembling a suit of armor with tightly packed, orderly scales. Its body was long and sleek, and its sharp fangs were clearly visible within its gaping maw.
[Sea Scaled Serpent, ATK: 1800]
"Do you think such a simple trick can block my attacks? You really underestimate me." Dark Devil Bishop shouted angrily, "Sea Scaled Serpent, attack directly!"
You Xuan remained calm and casually waved his hand again.
"Then, Trap Card 'Piercing Pitfall'. During this turn, when an opponent's monster declares an attack, that monster is destroyed, and the opponent takes damage equal to half the original Attack Points of the destroyed monster."
As the Sea Scaled Serpent charged forward, it suddenly stumbled and fell into a hidden deep pit. The pit was filled with metal spikes, instantly impaling the serpent and leaving it riddled with holes.
The giant serpent struggled desperately, twisting its body and screaming in agony before finally exploding with a loud bang.
[Dark Devil Bishop, LP: 4000 → LP: 3100]
"Ugh..."
Bishop staggered backward, gritting his teeth.
"Tsk, such a sneaky tactic."
But he quickly straightened up. "However, my assault isn't over yet.
I still have Lion-Headed Crocodilus! Attack!"
The short-snouted crocodile had a lion-like mane of thick, fluffy hair. Its body was covered in hard, pointed scales, resembling a suit of steel armor. It charged out like lightning, its short yet powerful limbs leaving deep claw marks on the ground. As it ran, the spikes all over its body made piercing sounds, like sharp arrows cutting through the air.
The monsters summoned in this world were all physical entities, and the psychological pressure on Duelists being charged by such fierce beasts was indescribable.
"How terrifying. Very well, it's time for another face-down card." You Xuan raised his hand again, "Trap Card 'Prison Fire'. When an opponent's monster declares an attack, send one card from your hand to the Graveyard and destroy the attacking monster. Then, inflict damage to your opponent equal to half the original Attack Points of the destroyed monster." (Original Card)
Devil Bishop: "!?!"
Again?!
Hellish flames soared into the sky, instantly turning his arrogant Lion-Headed Crocodilus into ashes. The flames continued to surge toward him, causing Bishop to howl in pain.
[Dark Devil Bishop, LP: 3100 → LP: 2150]
"You damned mutt!" Devil Bishop snarled.
In a single turn, three of his monsters were destroyed, and his Life Points had taken a significant hit. Yet, his opponent hadn't even summoned a single monster.
A ridiculous thought suddenly popped into his mind.
Could this guy be planning to defeat himself like this?
