Chapter 22: Iron Man's Gift
Chapter 22: Iron Man's Gift
After breakfast, Hass put on his police uniform, unusually stern, and called Jerry over.
“What is it, Dad? Did Elsa break another lightsaber from your collection?”
Jerry looked at Hass, who seemed unusually serious, and his face showed a mix of surprise. This was not like Hass at all.
“Cough, cough, no, it’s not that!”
Hass cleared his throat awkwardly, then put on a serious face again.
“Jerry, you’ve always been very understanding, kind, and full of a sense of justice, and I’m very proud of you. But you’re still a child. If you ever encounter a situation like yesterday again, I hope you’ll think about protecting yourself first. You’re my only son, and if anything happens to you—”
Yesterday, Hass had nearly exploded when he learned at the police station that Jerry and Elsa’s school bus had been hijacked by robbers.
Later, when he found the school bus and heard from Miss Berry about Jerry’s heroic act of taking someone else’s place as a hostage, he felt a mix of emotions.
As a police officer, Hass was very proud and supportive of Jerry’s actions.
But as a father, how could he possibly want his child to risk his life in such a dangerous situation?
Although Jerry wasn’t his biological son, after all these years, Hass had treated him like his own.
In the end, his role as a father overrode his role as a police officer, and he sternly warned Jerry that next time, as a child, he should prioritize his own safety.
“I know, Dad. I was pretty scared too. It won’t happen again!”
Jerry wasn’t a real child; he understood Hass’s concern and nodded in agreement without any argument.
However, if a similar situation arose again, the ordinary boy Jerry wouldn’t step in. The mysterious young wizard would.
“That’s good. You and Elsa stay home and play while I go to work. Call me if anything happens!”
Hass was relieved to see that Jerry didn’t resist or argue. He was worried that Jerry might not understand his warning and develop a rebellious attitude.
But the result was excellent.
Jerry was as understanding and mature as ever, easily grasping his father’s concern.
“Elsa, Dad’s going to work now. Aren’t you going to give me a kiss?”
After talking to Jerry, it was almost time for Hass to go to work. He called out to Elsa, who was watching cartoons in the living room.
Elsa didn’t disappoint Hass. She jumped off the sofa and ran over to kiss his face.
“Dad, can we play a game before you go to work?”
“A game? What kind of game?”
Hass was taken aback.
“Let’s see who can hit the lightest. If you win, I’ll let you go to work!”
Elsa looked at Hass with wide, innocent eyes.
“Alright, that’s easy!”
Hass made a fist and very, very gently tapped little Elsa’s tummy.
“Now it’s my turn!”
Elsa giggled, then clenched her tiny fist and, with a loud shout, said:
“Queen of Ice’s Judgment!”
She then punched Hass’s stomach hard, making him collapse to the ground.
“Okay, Dad, you win. Go to work!”
After delivering her punch, Elsa ran back to her cartoons without a backward glance, leaving Hass completely baffled.
Ding Ling!
At that moment, the doorbell suddenly rang.
Hass opened the door, and a delivery guy, holding a long, large cardboard box, politely asked:
"Is Mr. Jerry Carmen at home?"
"He's here. What do you need?"
Hass's face showed a puzzled expression.
"This is his delivery. Could you ask him to come out and sign for it?"
The delivery guy placed the box on the ground.
"My delivery? I didn't buy anything online."
Jerry, who had come at the sound of the doorbell, also looked puzzled.
He was just an eleven-year-old kid, usually either exercising or looking for opportunities to earn Little Red Stars. He hardly ever went online, let alone bought anything, especially something so big.
The delivery guy glanced at the delivery slip:
"A lady named Virginia Pepper Potts sent this to you!"
"This name sounds familiar!"
As Jerry signed for the package, he tried to recall the few memories he had of the Marvel movies.
"Is she Iron Man's girlfriend?"
"Oh, my God, this is actually Iron Man's suit. It's so cool. Jerry, someone sent you an Iron Man suit, and you can't even buy this thing on the market!"
While Jerry was still trying to remember, Hass had already opened the box, pulled out a life-sized Iron Man model, and looked incredibly excited.
"Dad, this is the suit Iron Man promised to give me yesterday when he saved me. I thought he was joking, but he really did send it to me.
But, you know, isn't your favorite thing the lightsaber from Star Wars?"
"Star Wars is just a movie, but the Iron Man suit is real. I love Tony Stark's suit that can shoot energy beams!"
Jerry was speechless.
He never imagined that his dad, Hass, was an Iron Man fan.
Someone once said that being a "middle-schooler at heart" can be inherited. Jerry didn't believe it until he met Hass and Elsa. Now he knew that "middle-schooler at heart" could indeed be passed down.
Elsa was into all kinds of magic, while Hass was into all kinds of mechs and lightsabers.
"Dad, if you like it, you can have it!"
Jerry wasn't particularly interested in such mechanical suits. When he asked Iron Man for the model, it was just to enhance his image and make sure Iron Man didn't suspect him.
Besides, the model Iron Man sent him was just that—a model. It couldn't possibly have any real weapons.
"Jerry, Dad loves you!"
Hearing Jerry's words, Hass was so happy he almost jumped for joy, and he leaned in to give Jerry a deep "Father's kiss."
"Dad, it's 8:40 now. You have twenty minutes to get to the police station, or you'll be late!"
Jerry deftly blocked Hass's "Father's kiss."
"God, time flies. Jerry, help me put this suit away, and don't let Elsa break it!"
Hass checked the time, quickly handed the Iron Man suit to Jerry, and rushed out in a hurry.
"Sure enough, men never grow up!"
Jerry couldn't help but shake his head.
A thirty-six-year-old, sharp and capable police chief still liked such things, but it wasn't that surprising.
After all, if someone were to give him a pair of nunchucks used by Bruce Lee, he wouldn't be this calm either.
