Chapter 216: Crimson Eyes
Chapter 216: Crimson Eyes
"It's finally time for our counterattack, Kakashi. Don't hold back now," Obito said, feeling a slight relief as he prepared to use his ninjutsu.
"I should be the one saying that. Make good use of all your chakra and don't waste it on ineffective ninjutsu," Kakashi countered, his grip tightening on the White Fang in his hand as he kept his eyes fixed on Berkeley, who was not far away.
"Our youth is truly burning bright today," Might Guy exclaimed, giving a thumbs-up to himself, Kakashi, and Obito.
The three shared a nod, their eyes determined.
Might Guy, ready to charge, shouted, "Let's do this!"
"Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu!"
Obito quickly formed the seals and spat out a massive amount of flames that formed into a four-meter-tall fireball, hurtling towards Berkeley.
Even though Might Guy's previous kick had been impressive, Obito still didn't think he could take Berkeley head-on. So, he wanted to create a suitable opportunity for Might Guy to attack.
The towering fireball, reaching a height of four meters, looked formidable. Although Berkeley could handle it, he didn't want to take the full brunt of this Fire Style ninjutsu if he could avoid it. He immediately darted to his right, attempting to dodge the attack.
But Kakashi wasn't about to let Berkeley escape so easily. He swiftly threw a barrage of shuriken and leaped onto the trees, using them to close in on his target.
Facing the onslaught of shuriken, Berkeley raised the sword in his hand. He gathered chakra in his palm and altered its nature, causing the silver sword to be enveloped in blue lightning.
Swish!
Berkeley swung his sword, now imbued with lightning, and instantly disposed of the incoming shuriken.
"If this is all you've got, this fight will be over soon," Berkeley said with a smirk.
He was impressed by the strength of these three young children; they were all geniuses. In a war, taking down geniuses was far more valuable than defeating ordinary ninjas.
Whoosh!
Just then, Kakashi, armed with kunai, burst forward with incredible speed, aiming a stab at Berkeley from the side.
Clang!
Berkeley calmly spun around and parried Kakashi's thrust with his sword, his expression unperturbed.
As Berkeley prepared to kick Kakashi away, he felt a gust of wind on his body, signaling Might Guy's attack.
"Sand Style: Great Wind Blast!"
Might Guy channeled his chakra into his legs, infusing them with power, and unleashed a rapid spinning kick that generated a powerful gust of wind.
Sizzle! Sizzle!!
Unfazed, Berkeley swiftly gathered his chakra, causing lightning to crackle around his feet. With a powerful push, he sent Kakashi flying backward, then used Lightning Flash to appear behind Might Guy, dodging his kick and delivering an elbow strike that sent Might Guy tumbling forward.
As Berkeley prepared to press his advantage and attack Might Guy with his lightning sword, the real Kakashi burst into action.
"Purple Electricity!"
Kakashi concentrated a large amount of chakra in his palm and swiftly altered its nature to lightning, creating a dazzling purple lightning blade. By changing its shape, he turned it into a sharp, blade-like weapon.
Using the acceleration provided by the purple lightning, Kakashi charged at Berkeley with incredible speed.
While not as fast as the Chidori, the purple lightning had its advantages. It was more suitable for ordinary people who didn't possess the Sharingan, allowing them to enhance their speed to a significant degree.
Instead of changing direction, Berkeley spun his body, slashing his lightning sword towards Kakashi.
But to Berkeley's surprise, Kakashi altered his technique mid-air. The shining purple lightning blade transformed into multiple bolts of lightning, crackling towards him.
Although Kakashi's purple lightning caught Berkeley off guard with its flexibility, he had encountered similar situations in his career as a ninja. He instantly burst forth a large amount of chakra, causing the lightning around his sword to intensify. The blue lightning that coated the blade grew denser, forming a powerful shield that blocked most of the purple lightning. Berkeley then swiftly adjusted his body to dodge the remaining bolts.
Might Guy quickly got back on his feet and charged at Berkeley again, joined by the shadow clone of Kakashi, who had been knocked back.
"Fire Style: Fire Dragon Jutsu!" Obito had been preparing his next Fire Style ninjutsu.
He gathered a large amount of chakra in his throat, compressed it, and altered its form into that of a fire dragon. Finally, he spat out a ferocious fire dragon with sharp teeth.
After unleashing the Fire Dragon Jutsu, Obito felt a sense of emptiness in his body. This technique was far more taxing on his chakra than the Fireball Jutsu.
Facing the relentless onslaught of the three ninjas, Berkeley's expression turned serious.
He swung his sword to keep Might Guy at bay and, in a flash, grabbed the attacking shadow clone of Kakashi, using him as a projectile to throw at the fire dragon.
Boom!!
The fire dragon exploded, engulfing the shadow clone of Kakashi.
Seizing the moment, the real Kakashi drew out his White Fang and slashed at Berkeley with deadly precision.
"Thunderclap Sword!"
A dazzling yellow lightning appeared on Berkeley's sword, causing it to vibrate at an incredibly fast rate.
Berkeley parried Kakashi's attack with his sword while sidestepping to dodge Might Guy's strike.
The immense force transmitted through Berkeley's sword caused Kakashi to furrow his brows. He eyed the dangerous lightning sword warily and quickly retreated.
"This guy is probably one of the stronger jonin," Kakashi thought, contemplating their next move.
Berkeley embodied Kakashi's impression of a jonin—a versatile ninja with no glaring weaknesses in ninjutsu or taijutsu and ample combat experience. He could turn everything he knew into fighting power, making him a formidable opponent.
Even the strongest among them, Might Guy, could only barely hold his own against Berkeley's relentless attacks.
Having expended a significant portion of his chakra, Obito also joined the fray, kunai in hand.
Despite facing three opponents, Berkeley showed no signs of weakening. His speed was extraordinary, and even Kakashi, with his Lightning Flash, struggled to keep up with his movements.
Obito channeled his chakra once more and employed a Fire Style ninjutsu, sending three kunai infused with flames toward Berkeley.
Just as Obito thought victory was within reach, he was unaware that Berkeley had been waiting for an opportunity to strike against him.
Berkeley's feet were enveloped in a mass of lightning, causing him to vanish from Obito's sight, and the three kunai laden with flames fell short of their target.
"So fast!"
Obito's pupils constricted as Berkeley reappeared by his side and swung his sword.
Clang!
Kakashi appeared at the nick of time, blocking Berkeley's sword with his White Fang.
However, Berkeley's planned ambush was far from over. The chakra he had gathered beforehand erupted, causing his sword to be enveloped in a dazzling display of lightning. Kakashi was unable to withstand Berkeley's formidable Lightning Style sword technique, and a bloody gash appeared on his left leg.
"Kakashi!" Obito couldn't help but cry out in worry, and a sense of self-reproach filled his heart. If only he had been more cautious, they wouldn't be in this predicament.
"Sand Style: Great Wind Blast!"
Seeing this, Might Guy burst into action, delivering a kick towards Berkeley to prevent him from further harming Kakashi. Meanwhile, Obito grabbed Kakashi and began to retreat to the rear.
Feeling the numbness in his left leg, Kakashi knew things were taking a turn for the worse. Being slashed by the sword was one thing, but having his leg paralyzed by lightning meant a temporary loss of combat ability.
With all three of them struggling to hold their ground, if only Obito and Might Guy remained, they would have no hope of victory.
"Obito, let me go. Go with Guy. If I expend all my chakra, I might be able to hold him off for a while. You two use the breathing technique to retreat in different directions, and you might be able to escape," Kakashi suggested.
With chakra, he could still move around with one leg and use hand seals.
At this point, Kakashi saw no hope for victory. If all three of them were in peak condition, they might have stood a chance, but in his current state, it would be difficult for him to engage in the battle.
Rather than being defeated one by one, he preferred to make a last stand to ensure Obito and Might Guy's survival. After all, with his leg paralyzed, he knew he wouldn't be able to flee.
After saying this, Kakashi broke free from Obito's grip and stood on one leg.
"What nonsense are you spouting? Do you think that Obito Uchiha and Might Guy are the kind of people who would abandon their teammates and flee?" Obito shouted, his eyes gradually turning crimson.
"Have you forgotten Mu Yue's mission? To survive, this isn't about abandoning teammates, it's about making the right choice," Kakashi shook his head.
"Like this, I'll have a hard time fighting alongside you. Instead of us all dying here, it's better to sacrifice myself so that the two of you can live," Kakashi said calmly. He had always been prepared for such a choice, even if it meant disregarding his teammate's injuries to complete the mission.
For the sake of the mission, he was willing to sacrifice his teammates, and by the same token, he was prepared to sacrifice himself.
Kakashi did not fear death. Before he turned seven, he didn't understand death, and after that age, he no longer feared it.
"If there is an afterlife, I'll ask Father if he regrets the choice he made," Kakashi thought to himself.
"Kakashi, who do you think you are?" Obito asked, lowering his head and clenching his fists tightly.
Obito conceded to Mu Yue's order for them to leave, as the battlefield ahead was far beyond their capabilities, and their presence would only create vulnerabilities for her.
But this time, the enemy was merely an upper-nin level that Mu Yue could take down with a single ninjutsu. Despite having decades more experience, the enemy wasn't much stronger than them.
Facing such an opponent, should they really abandon their comrade?
"No!" Obito screamed within his heart. This was a companion who had been injured while trying to save him. To abandon him now would be no different from dying, because the one making that choice would no longer be the Obito Uchiha he knew.
Obito's pent-up emotions, which had built up ever since Mu Yue's rear guard action, finally burst forth. He couldn't accept his own weakness, his inability to aid Mu Yue in battle, and he resented being looked down upon by Kakashi, who had suggested he abandon his comrade and flee. He couldn't accept it; he truly couldn't!
The extreme emotions caused a surge of unique chakra in Obito's brain, and under its influence, his eyes transformed completely into a bloody hue, with two tomoe patterns floating within them.
In the instant the Sharingan appeared, the world as Obito saw it changed—it became clearer and easier to observe.
"This is..." Obito paused for a moment, instantly recalling the answer he had received from Itachi when he asked about the feeling of opening his eyes. It was exactly the same as what he was experiencing now, perhaps even better.
"Kakashi, you self-absorbed guy, do you think we can't do it without you? It's just the two of us now. Without you, Guy and I can still defeat the enemy. You just stay here and watch!" Obito lifted his head, his blood-red eyes fixed on Kakashi.
"Obito, you actually..." Kakashi exclaimed, his expression one of shock as he realized that Obito had awakened the Uchiha clan's Sharingan at this critical moment.
Kakashi was well aware of the reputation of the Uchiha clan's Sharingan, which greatly enhanced a user's ninja abilities. Any Uchiha who awakened the Sharingan would typically become an upper-nin, given normal development.
Without hesitation, Obito turned and rushed towards Berkeley. Without Kakashi and Obito's assistance, Might Guy soon found himself at a disadvantage against Berkeley.
"Is this the power of unwavering conviction?" Kakashi muttered to himself, recalling Mu Yue's words.
