Chapter 214: Potter's Law
Chapter 214: Potter's Law
The hatching of the dragon egg was much faster than Kyle had expected. Easter Break had only just passed, and he received a letter from Hagrid.
It only said four words: "About to Hatch."
The handwriting was messier than ever, and the letters were crooked. Kyle was certain that Hagrid hadn't taken his eyes off the dragon egg even while writing this note.
If he had glanced at the parchment, the letters wouldn't have been so skewed.
But it was understandable. After all, raising a dragon had been Hagrid's lifelong dream, and now it was the critical moment for the egg to hatch. It was already a feat that he remembered to write a letter.
Kyle hurriedly ate a few bites of grilled sausage and rushed to Hagrid's hut.
"You came just in time. It's about to come out."
Hagrid opened the door and said excitedly, "I was so nervous last night that I couldn't sleep at all."
The egg had already been moved from the fireplace and was now on the table, occasionally twitching.
However, Kyle was disappointed to see no cracks on the dragon egg.
"Judging by the frequency of the movements, it will probably take another two hours for it to hatch," Kyle sighed.
The egg would likely hatch around ten in the morning, and he would be in the Transfiguration class on the third floor of the castle at that time.
If it could have hatched a day earlier, it would have been better. Yesterday morning, they had Herbology, and the third greenhouse was near the grounds. He could have taken a look during the break.
But not today.
After Transfiguration, he had Defense Against the Dark Arts. If possible, Kyle didn't want to be late.
...
After returning to the castle, Kyle was still thinking about this.
The first three days after a fire dragon hatches are the best time to get along with it. At this stage, the hatchling is like a newly awakened creature, still in the adaptation phase. Its aggressive and combative instincts are suppressed to the lowest level, and it has a natural affinity for all living beings it sees.
If he missed this period, it would be much harder to build a good relationship with the dragon later.
It looked like he would have to make a few more trips to Hagrid's place over the next few days.
Of course, gifts were also necessary. He didn't need to prepare anything special; just some dried meat and fish would do.
These were things that Norwegian Ridgeback Dragons liked, perfect for boosting their affection.
In a way, raising a dragon wasn't much different from raising a cat.
In Transfiguration class, Kyle listened absentmindedly to Professor McGonagall's lecture, then raised his wand and transformed the rabbit in front of him into a glittering elegant trophy.
"The shape is perfect, and there isn't a single hair left. If it had been a month ago, I would have given you five points..."
At this moment, Professor McGonagall's voice suddenly came from the side.
"I understand your determination to win the competition, but I must remind you that we are supposed to transfigure slippers... You can't walk in a Quidditch Cup, can you?"
"Sorry, Professor..."
Kyle's face turned red, and he quickly waved his wand again, turning the trophy into a pair of fluffy slippers with cat ears.
Professor McGonagall finally showed a satisfied expression.
"Don't let your mind wander in the next class."
"Hufflepuff gets three points."
...
It was a struggle to wait until noon. As soon as the class ended, Kyle rushed out of the classroom, planning to go and get acquainted with the newly hatched dragon.
On his way past the Great Hall entrance, he saw Harry and Malfoy.
Kyle wasn't surprised. As long as it wasn't class time, you could always find Malfoy near Harry; it was common knowledge...
But they looked a bit different today.
Malfoy is standing next to Crabbe and Goyle, cackling loudly with a smug look on his face.
Harry, on the other hand, is watching them nervously, as if they have some sort of leverage over him.
Both of them are so focused on each other that neither notices Kyle walking past them.
Tsk tsk... Has Malfoy managed to outmaneuver Ron and take his place?
Kyle turns around curiously to take a glance at them.
However, ten minutes later, he understands what's going on.
"So, did Malfoy see the Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon too?"
"I... I'm not sure," Hagrid says dejectedly. "I only saw him at the window, but I didn't notice when he arrived."
Kyle turns to look at the window Hagrid is pointing at and furrows his brow.
The flawless version is available at 69 Books! 6=9+Book_Bar, the first to release this novel.
"I think Malfoy probably just saw something on the table, but he didn't know it was a dragon."
"Really?" Hagrid asks excitedly.
If Malfoy didn't see it, doesn't that mean he doesn't have to send Norbert away?
"I'm just guessing," Kyle says.
The window isn't very high, and most of it is blocked by curtains, leaving only a small gap. If someone were standing in front of the table, they could probably block the view.
But it's hard to say how much of the view would be blocked, as Kyle wasn't there at the time and isn't sure of Harry's position.
However, as far as he knows, Malfoy never misses a chance to cause trouble for Harry. If he had seen the dragon, he wouldn't be in the Great Hall right now but in Snape's office.
Kyle offers Hagrid a few more words of comfort and then takes out some dried fish to playfully tease the newly hatched dragon.
It's no wonder they're dragons; even though the little one has just hatched and is smaller than a kettle, its teeth are already very sharp, easily tearing the dried fish into two pieces.
"Kyle... Is it really okay to feed it this?"
Hagrid asks anxiously, "I remember the book saying it should drink chicken blood brandy at this time and only start feeding it after a week."
Hagrid takes out the book he keeps under his pillow, "A Guide to Raising Fire Dragons for Pleasure and Profit."
He's been reading this book lately, and although some of the content is outdated, it's very comprehensive, including the complete process of raising dragons.
"What you're saying only applies to artificially raised standards. For dragons living in the wild, they can't find chicken blood brandy."
Kyle takes out another dried fish and says, "In fact, for some dragons, like the Norwegian Ridgeback or Hungarian Horntail, they can eat normally after hatching... Those sharp teeth aren't just for show."
"Is that so?" Hagrid blinks in confusion.
But seeing Norbert happily eating the fish, he believes Kyle's words.
Whether it's brandy or fish, as long as it likes it, that's fine.
Soon, the bag of dried fish is empty, and the little dragon burps contentedly, spitting out a small cluster of flames.
"It seems Norbert likes fish..." Hagrid says happily, "Oh, by the way, you probably don't know yet, Norbert is the name I gave it."
