Chapter 213: Today's Captive is a Bit Too Eager
Chapter 213: Today's Captive is a Bit Too Eager
You Xuan emerged from the spatial gate created by the Great Opening, experiencing once more the dizzying and surreal sensation of soaring through the clouds. As his disoriented senses slowly returned to normal, he found himself in a completely different setting.
The surroundings seemed to be enveloped in darkness. Above, a crimson crescent moon hung in the pitch-black sky, casting its eerie light upon the dilapidated rooftops and cobblestone paths below, which reflected a dark crimson glow.
Lining the streets were ancient buildings in a medieval style, their doors and windows tightly shut, devoid of any signs of life. Occasionally, a gentle breeze would stir, causing the curtains by the windows to flutter silently, their soft whispers resembling strange murmurs.
"Have I arrived in the world of spirits?" You Xuan furrowed his brows as he looked around, a sense of dissonance lingering within him that he couldn't quite explain.
"Is there something different about this spirit world compared to the previous ones?" He turned to ask.
The Messenger of the Great Opening appeared beside him, his expression peculiar as he studied You Xuan. After a moment, he spoke, "No, it's not that the spirit world is different. It's..."
He paused.
"...it's you who is different."
"Me?"
You Xuan clenched his fist. The sensation of touch felt real, and everything he saw, touched, and smelled seemed authentic, yet the sense of dissonance remained.
"Yes. To put it bluntly, your physical body isn't actually here. You are here in a projected form of some sort." The Chaos Warrior explained, "Similar to how spirits usually appear in your Duelist world."
His expression grew even more peculiar as he added, "It's that consciousness projection device, isn't it? Truly astonishing. Even I have never encountered such a situation before."
You Xuan had a hunch about what was happening.
It had to be the result of Kaiba Corporation's cutting-edge "Link System" technology.
The Link System was developed based on the black-tech Duel Disk used by the CEO in The Dimensional Dark Side, designed to project a user's consciousness into a shared virtual platform for gaming.
Unexpectedly, You Xuan's combination of the Link System while in a logged-in state and the Great Opening's rare spatial ability had caused a bug-like projection of himself into the spirit world. The avatar he was using was the virtual image he had created in the Link System, and his body was an artificial construct created by the system based on his consciousness.
He wondered if Kaiba Corporation was aware of this unconventional application of their technology. However, their technology was evidently robust enough to function even in another world, and he could easily log out and return to his physical body in the Yellow Dorm whenever he wanted.
As the Chaos Warrior had pointed out, it was similar to how spirits usually manifested in the human world. The only difference was that spirits typically required their corresponding cards as a medium.
With this new method of entering the spirit world, You Xuan's future explorations would be much more convenient and less risky. He wouldn't need to physically travel to the spirit world each time, and he could log out and resume his exploration at any time. He could even attend classes during the day and continue his adventures in the spirit world at night.
The town he currently found himself in appeared to be abandoned. As You Xuan walked along the street, he didn't encounter a single soul.
After about ten minutes, as he turned into another street, he finally spotted figures at the end of the road. A group of armored creatures, their appearance suggested they belonged to the demon race, although he couldn't identify their specific species.
The demons had also noticed him, and they immediately started shouting.
"Over here! There's another living one!"
"Stop right there!"
"Don't let him escape!"
Brandishing their blades and spears, the demons charged towards You Xuan, their voices echoing through the empty streets.
The demons approached, surrounding You Xuan in the middle, exchanging glances with each other.
Their captive's nonchalant attitude seemed to leave them momentarily unsure of what to do.
"Hmm, should I have run just now?" You Xuan mused aloud, making the situation even more awkward.
One of the demons brandished a gleaming knife and snapped, "Move!"
You Xuan shrugged.
Fine, he would keep walking.
Currently, his state was similar to that of a spirit in the real world; aside from Dark Games that directly harmed his consciousness, he was virtually invulnerable. So having a knife pressed against his face barely registered as a threat.
As he walked alongside the group of demons, You Xuan took the opportunity to ask about their surroundings, "May I ask, where are we headed?"
The demons looked perplexed, seemingly puzzled by the captive's ability to remain calm in such a perilous situation.
However, one of the kinder demons answered, "Of course, we're headed to the stronghold."
"Stronghold, I see," You Xuan nodded, "Could you remind me what this stronghold is like?"
One of the demons gave him a strange look, as if the question was absurd.
"I'm a foreigner, just passing through," You Xuan explained.
The demon scrutinized his unique attire and seemed to agree that he didn't look like he was from around there. He let out a laugh.
"Heh, a foreigner, huh? Well, now that you're here, don't even think about leaving," the demon sneered.
"The stronghold is a sanctuary protected by the True God, a concentration camp for rebels, and hell for anyone who dares to defy the will of the God," another demon declared loudly.
True God...
You Xuan thought to himself, I wonder if this God is also a scaly scumbag like Olihagan?
This guy, Olihagan, seemed to have his claws in everything; his influence even reached various spirit dimensions.
It appeared that this group of demons might also be spirits that had fallen under Olihagan's control. This deserted town had probably been evacuated during the invasion of the dark forces.
The stronghold the demons mentioned was one of Olihagan's bases in this world. From their description, it seemed to also serve as a prison.
The spirits who had previously lived in the nearby town were likely imprisoned there, making it similar to a POW concentration camp.
The last time You Xuan had visited an Olihagan stronghold in the spirit world, he had fond memories of it.
The hospitable leader of that outpost, White Bone King, had welcomed him with his entire family, and after a pleasant duel, entrusted his wife and children to You Xuan's care.
Another outpost leader, the Beetle Armor Knight, had gone out of his way to greet You Xuan warmly, traveling a great distance with his entire household to show his hospitality.
That duel had also been quite enjoyable, and the rewards had been plentiful.
So, You Xuan had a rather positive impression of these outposts established by the generous scaly scumbag in the spirit world. Upon hearing this, he couldn't help but look forward to this 'stronghold'.
After all, in the spirit world, there was a chance to obtain new card series that might not even be known in the outside world yet.
"How much further is it?"
"Are we there yet?"
"Why is it taking so long?"
". . ."
You Xuan asked these questions repeatedly as he walked, leaving his captors bewildered.
"Um, why is our captive more eager than we are?"
