Chapter 212: Ron's Illusion
Chapter 212: Ron's Illusion
After marking the locations of the two medlar trees, Kyle didn't linger and headed back to Hagrid, who was gazing at the cabin, with an armful of twigs he had gathered along the way.
"Oh... Did you find the perfect spot that quickly?" Hagrid turned and stammered, "I wasn't thinking about the dragon egg. I just saw something running over there... probably a Kneazle."
"Are there still Kneazles in the Forbidden Forest?"
"Yes."
Relieved that Kyle believed him, Hagrid continued, "In fact, there are quite a few Kneazles in the Forbidden Forest, but they rarely show themselves to wizards. Even I only catch a glimpse of them occasionally.
As you know, those magical creatures are incredibly intelligent and vigilant. If they want to hide, no one can find them."
Kyle nodded in agreement. Kneazles were indeed very clever.
Newt had always believed that they possessed an innate Legilimency ability, similar to Cat Panthers, but more complex and unlike any known magic.
However, one thing was certain—you could never hide your true intentions from a Kneazle, as they could easily see right through you.
Unconsciously, Kyle thought of his own Tom, who spent his days eating and sleeping, always ready to roll over for a belly rub...
Well, that guy was definitely an oddity among Kneazles, like a Husky in a pack of wolves, standing out with his unique quirks.
Upon their return to the cabin, Hagrid enthusiastically invited Kyle to come in again.
"Maybe next time, Hagrid," Kyle shook his head. "I need to finish my homework, and I want to make use of the holiday to process these twigs.
By the way, remember to send me a letter when the dragon egg hatches. I've helped Newt take care of baby dragons before, so I have some experience in that regard."
"That's... wonderful," Hagrid blurted out, then quickly cleared his throat. "I mean, of course, that's possible if you have the time!"
"Don't worry about that, I'll definitely make time," Kyle waved and started walking towards the castle.
Hagrid turned back towards the cabin.
Inside, Harry, Ron, and Hermione were anxiously waiting. When they saw Hagrid return, they rushed over to him.
"Where's Kyle...?" Harry asked.
"Oh, he had other things to do, so he headed back to the castle," Hagrid removed the bow and arrow from his shoulder and hung it on the wall. "I think you three should get back to your homework too, instead of pestering me about Professor Snape.
I can assure you, he wouldn't steal the Sorcerer's Stone."
"But..."
Harry wanted to say something more, but Hermione spoke up first. "Is what Kyle is doing related to those medlar twigs? And what about the talisman you mentioned earlier?"
"Oh, that..."
Hagrid thought for a moment. "I remember it was a wooden carving about the size of a Galleon, I think it was called... Passing Charm... I can't remember the name, but the meaning is definitely correct.
Those charms were all the rage at Hogwarts last year. Almost everyone had one."
"Passing charm...?" Harry and Ron's eyes lit up, and they asked eagerly, "Can that charm really help you pass exams?"
"How much does it cost?"
"You two..." Hermione said angrily, "If you want to pass your exams, study harder instead of relying on some talisman.
Harry nodded in agreement. "Or maybe the professors don't see it as cheating. After all, Hagrid just said it appeared last year, so it's still quite new."
"You two... Humph!"
Hermione huffed in frustration, too annoyed to continue the conversation. Instead, she turned to Hagrid and asked, "Hagrid, do you really think that talisman can help everyone pass their exams?"
"Of course not," Hagrid laughed. "Even last year, quite a few students got P (Poor)
grades, and there were also quite a few D (Dreadful)
and T (Troll)
grades. Hermione is right, if you want to pass your exams, you need to study hard. That's the only way."
The light of enthusiasm in Harry and Ron's eyes dimmed instantly.
"So, Kyle was lying to us?" Harry asked, a little disappointed.
"Well... not exactly," Hagrid furrowed his brow in thought. "Kyle has said on multiple occasions that the talisman is just a symbol and has no other use."
"But it's strange," Hagrid continued, "Even so, many students still believe that it's useful. I've heard one student say that they've always struggled in Charms class, but they somehow managed to get an A (Acceptable)
on their end-of-term exam."
Upon hearing this, Harry and Ron's eyes lit up once more, while Hermione frowned, deep in thought.
The cabin fell silent, except for the sound of Hagrid sawing wood by the fireplace... er, his singing voice.
If Professor Flitwick were here, he would have certainly told everyone that the student's grade had nothing to do with the talisman and was purely a result of their hard work.
Unfortunately, Professor Flitwick was not present, likely enjoying a drink at the Three Broomsticks.
On their way back to the castle, Harry and Ron continued to discuss the talisman excitedly.
"It can help you pass exams... Wow, that thing is even more amazing than the Sorcerer's Stone!" Harry exclaimed. "I don't care how much it costs, I have to get one!"
"Yeah... I want one too," Ron's enthusiasm faded a little as he felt the few knuts in his pocket. "I hope it's not too expensive."
"I can... um, lend you the money, or you could ask Fred and George," Harry offered.
Harry had been about to say that he could buy it for Ron, but he quickly remembered Ron's sensitivity about Galleons, so he changed the subject. "I remember they were involved with the map at the start of term, so they might be involved with this too. They're your brothers, they'll definitely give you a good deal."
"You're right, I can't believe I forgot about them..." Ron exclaimed, his head shooting up. "They've always gotten along well with Kyle, they wouldn't want their little brother to fail his exams!"
"Humph!"
Hermione suddenly bumped into Ron and quickly walked away from the two boys.
Their laughter died down abruptly.
