Chapter 211: When to Stand Your Ground
Chapter 211: When to Stand Your Ground
The day after giving birth, Ou Guohua was fully prepared and boarded the bus home.
Accompanying her were Deng Yuntai and Zhang Xiuping.
Ou Guohua’s parents, Ou Father and Ou Mother, did not rush back to Poxin Village. Instead, they followed the group back to Naye Village.
They were pleased that their daughter had given them a granddaughter, but as rural people, they were well aware that most villagers favored boys over girls. They suspected that their daughter's in-laws shared this mindset, and they were not entirely at ease without checking in on the situation themselves.
"Here come the in-laws!"
"Ai, Huahua, you’re finally back!"
"It’s a girl, but that’s fine. Girls are good, and they’re less mischievous than boys."
"Huahua, go back to your room and don’t catch a chill. I’ll go kill a chicken and make ginger wine."
"..."
Upon returning home, Ou Guohua almost doubted her eyes when she saw the warm and welcoming attitude of her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. She had anticipated that her mother-in-law would have some harsh words for her after giving birth to a girl, and she had mentally prepared herself to ignore any minor slights. However, she was completely taken aback by the unexpected kindness.
Could it be that her parents’ presence was the reason her mother-in-law was putting on this act?
It wasn’t unreasonable for Ou Guohua to think this way. She had been married for almost a year, and during that time, she had a good sense of her mother-in-law’s character. Given that she had gone to the county to give birth without consulting anyone and returned with a daughter, her mother-in-law should not have been this welcoming.
The only explanation was that her mother-in-law was putting on an act for her parents.
But that didn’t quite make sense either. While her mother-in-law might be acting, why would her sister-in-law also be part of the act?
What was really going on?
Ou Guohua was genuinely confused by the sudden change in her mother-in-law’s and sister-in-law’s behavior.
What she didn’t know was that all of this was thanks to her husband.
Ever since Deng Changyuan had made a strong statement in front of his family a few days ago, his mother and sister-in-law had been in a panic, trying to find ways to make amends. Now that they saw Ou Guohua return from the county with a newborn, both the mother-in-law and the sister-in-law quickly showed their concern and care.
Their goal was clear: to convince Deng Changyuan to stay in the family and not split off on his own.
This situation taught a valuable lesson: whether dealing with outsiders or family, there are times when you need to stand your ground. If you can’t bring yourself to fight for your rights and choose to be passive, even your family will not consider your feelings. But if you stand up for yourself, no one can ignore you, and your words will carry weight.
If Deng Changyuan had remained silent and allowed his mother and sister-in-law to criticize his wife a few days ago, Ou Guohua’s return would have been very different. Even if they had refrained from saying much in front of her parents, their attitude would not have been as warm and welcoming as it was now.
But Deng Changyuan did not remain passive. He acted decisively to quash any negativity, which is why Ou Guohua was now being treated so well.
Ou Father and Ou Mother were unaware of the underlying reasons but were relieved to see the warm and welcoming attitude of their daughter’s in-laws. They now believed that their daughter might have misjudged her in-laws, who were not as bad as she had described.
In the afternoon, Deng Changyuan returned from his work at the brick factory. Seeing his wife getting along well with his family, a smile never left his face. He was quite satisfied, realizing that the warning he had given to his parents and his elder brother and sister-in-law had indeed been effective.
Mr. and Mrs. Ou stayed overnight at their in-laws' place and returned to Poxin Village the next day, feeling reassured.
...
In the room, Ou Guohua, puzzled, recounted the unusual behavior of her mother-in-law and sister-in-law to her two sisters. She furrowed her brow and said, “Sis Ping, Sis Fang, don’t you think this is strange? They didn’t mention my trip to the county to give birth at all, and they didn’t even care that I had a daughter. My mother-in-law is treating me better than when I first married into the family. It’s just unbelievable.”
Hearing this, Zhang Xiuping and Ou Guofang exchanged glances, both seeing the confusion in each other’s eyes.
Zhang Xiuping pondered and said, “Ahua, it does sound a bit strange, but it’s a good thing for you. There’s no need to worry about the reasons behind it.”
Ou Guofang nodded. “That’s right. Why overthink it? It’s a rare good thing that your mother-in-law and sister-in-law are being nice to you. At least they’ll help with the baby, making your postpartum recovery much easier!”
Ou Guohua smiled. “You’re right. I was bracing myself for a tough time when I came back, but this is a pleasant surprise.”
Ou Guofang asked, “Ahua, how was your trip to Bobai to give birth?”
Ou Guohua sighed. “This trip to the county really opened my eyes. The county is a different world compared to our village. Giving birth at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital gave me a lot of peace of mind. The midwives there are professionals, much better than the amateur midwives we have in the countryside.”
Zhang Xiuping added, “Ahfang, I suggest you also go to the county to give birth. By the time you’re due, I’ll already be doing business there. You can stay with me; we can squeeze in. You’ll only need to pay for the travel expenses and hospital fees, which won’t be too much. But it’s much safer than giving birth in the countryside.”
Ou Guofang was somewhat intrigued and nodded. “I’ll talk to my husband, Ahdong, about it and see what he thinks. If he’s okay with it, I’ll come to the county to find you, Sis Ping.”
Zhang Xiuping agreed. “I’ll write down my address for you so you won’t get lost.”
Ou Guofang hesitated. “Sis Ping, I’ve never been to the county before. Can you write down the address in detail? I’m afraid I might not find it otherwise.”
Zhang Xiuping laughed. “Don’t worry. The county isn’t as big as it seems. I live next to the police station. You can ask anyone for directions, and they’ll point you in the right direction. Plus, our restaurant will be open by the time you come to give birth. If you’re worried about finding my place, you can always go to the restaurant first.”
“Sis Ping, what’s your restaurant called?”
“It’s called Sui Feng Restaurant, right across from the People’s Cinema. It’s easy to find.”
“Got it, I’ll remember that.”
