Chapter 211: Keep a Cool Head
Chapter 211: Keep a Cool Head
It was a brand new day.
Ever since eating Naoki's Storm Buns, Aerodactyl felt that it had become the strongest Pokemon on the ranch.
This thought excited it so much that even its walk had an air of swagger.
After delivering Mrs. Dantes her fresh Miltank milk, Aerodactyl's attention turned to the previous champion of the ranch, Groudon.
Seeing Groudon lazily lounging on the grass, Aerodactyl rushed over and stood in front of it, staring intently.
Sensing this unwavering gaze, Groudon lifted its eyelids and asked in confusion, "Agas?"
Aerodactyl eagerly asked, "Roar?" (May I spar with you?)
Groudon: ?
Did it hear that right so early in the morning?
Are you sure? Groudon gave Aerodactyl a skeptical look.
Aerodactyl nodded vigorously, "Roar!"
Groudon remained silent.
It hadn't wanted to bother with this Aerodactyl, but thinking about it carefully, ever since yesterday, Aerodactyl had been flying a bit too close to the sun.
Because it believed itself to be the strongest Pokemon on the ranch now.
As for how Groudon knew about this...
It was because Aerodactyl had told Motostoke while they were gazing at the moon last night.
At first, it hadn't felt anything special, just envy. But now...
This wouldn't do! It was supposed to be Naoki's strongest Pokemon!
Groudon's expression turned serious, and it started to compete with Aerodactyl.
It would be the one to be known as Naoki's most powerful partner!
Just then, Naoki emerged from the greenhouse and saw Motostoke rushing towards him, saying that Groudon and Aerodactyl had started fighting.
Naoki paused, quickly discarded the Spraysquirt in his hand, and followed Motostoke to the Gogoat pen.
Next to the pen was the battle arena he had built to welcome challengers for the Grassland Trial.
At that moment, the two Pokemon had already arrived and were standing at opposite ends of the arena, ready to face each other.
"What's going on here?" Naoki asked anxiously.
"Roar!" Aerodactyl replied excitedly.
"Agas," Groudon's expression remained unchanged, as if this were just a regular sparring session.
Naoki had been worried, but seeing the two Pokemon like this, he gradually relaxed.
After all, it was common for other trainers on their journeys to have their Pokemon battle each other as a form of training.
"Alright then, I'll be the referee for this match!"
Speaking of which, he was quite curious himself.
In the games, Groudon was a legendary Pokemon, but its strength didn't seem to match that of the legendary Pokemon from previous generations.
Now, with Aerodactyl having eaten the Storm Bun, would it be a match for Groudon?
Seeing that they were both ready, Naoki blew a whistle and announced, "Battle start!"
Neither Pokemon attacked immediately.
Aerodactyl, full of fighting spirit, stared intently at Groudon and roared, "Roar!" (I'm coming at you!)
Groudon was speechless: "...Agas."
Seeing this, Aerodactyl sprang into action.
It pulled its wings close and began to gather an air vortex in front of it.
However, in the instant Aerodactyl moved, Groudon also sprang into action.
Its crimson form was like lightning, and it rushed to Aerodactyl in the blink of an eye, abandoning its defensive stance to launch an assault.
"That speed!" Naoki was astonished. Was this what Groudon looked like when it went all out?
The fist that could shatter the earth slammed into Aerodactyl, interrupting its technique. Before Aerodactyl could react, Groudon followed up with a Wide Slash that swept across the field.
Aerodactyl felt its vision darken, and in that first exchange, it was knocked out. Its eyes rolled back, and little stars circled its head.
"It's...over already?" Naoki couldn't believe his eyes.
Groudon looked at Naoki, and as their eyes met, it softened, returning to its usual gentle demeanor.
"Agas!"
"Wow, that was amazing!" Naoki exclaimed, impressed.
Groudon scratched its head bashfully in response to Naoki's praise.
It knew it still had a long way to go!
Groudon's mind drifted back to the time when it was just a Motostoke, standing on the crystalline ground of the 0-Zone, aspiring to be as strong as the powerful Groudon above, who effortlessly fought four opponents at once.
Even then, it had made a wish.
It wanted to become a formidable Groudon, protecting and staying by Naoki's side forever.
And now, it had fulfilled that wish.
It was the strongest Pokemon by Naoki's side.
Naoki stepped forward to heal the defeated Aerodactyl.
The Aerodactyl slowly opened its eyes, looking disheveled and embarrassed.
"Any thoughts?" Naoki asked gently, clearing his throat.
Aerodactyl rubbed the back of its head sheepishly. "Roar..."
It knew it had been too proud.
Seeing Aerodactyl's dejected expression, Naoki couldn't help but speculate.
Groudon would never have initiated a challenge like this on its own.
Based on his understanding of both Pokemon, he guessed that Aerodactyl, feeling overly confident after its recent power boost, had likely challenged the stronger Groudon.
With a smile, Naoki ruffled Aerodactyl's head. "Don't be too hard on yourself. You did great. Just remember one thing—as dragons, we need to stay humble. Be modest, especially around Groudon, who is family to us. It won't think less of you for losing, but other Pokemon might mock you if you boast too much."
Naoki proceeded to illustrate his point with an example. "Imagine going to show off your strength to a wild Aerodactyl, only to be defeated, with them taunting, 'Is that all? I thought you were supposed to be so strong!'"
Hearing this, Aerodactyl's face turned red as it imagined itself in that situation, feeling a mix of shame and anger.
"So, what should we do in that situation?" Naoki asked, popping a translated melon seed candy into his mouth from his pocket.
Without hesitation, Aerodactyl replied, "Roar!" (Let's fight again!)
"And what if you lose again?" Naoki inquired.
Aerodactyl thought carefully, looking conflicted. "Roar..."
It didn't know what else to do.
"That's why," Naoki continued, "it's always good to stay humble. It's a lesson you're learning from your past experiences, and I want you to understand this."
Aerodactyl nodded in agreement.
"It's not your fault," Naoki assured. "I just want you to grasp one important concept. Strength is meant to protect yourself and your companions, not to flaunt to others."
At these words, Aerodactyl paused, considering them. It glanced at Groudon beside it, as if understanding something new, and then nodded earnestly at Naoki.
"Roar!"
Naoki smiled and patted Aerodactyl's head affectionately.
"Your current strength is already impressive, and I have a task for you soon. But we'll need to wait a little longer."
He was referring to the Galarian Spectrier and Glastrier.
Naoki intended to bring Aerodactyl with him to the Galar region. If the game's scenario played out, and they had to fight during the horse-taming process, he could let Aerodactyl test its might against the Spectrier and Glastrier, without their Gmax Rapidash.
He wondered if these two Pokemon, with their base stats of 580, could defeat Aerodactyl, with its base stat of 600.
