Chapter 210: The Rescue
Chapter 210: The Rescue
Upon entering the room, Chen Chuan quickly scanned the area. The large space was sparsely furnished, with steel-framed bunk beds occupying what should have been the office desk area. On each bed lay a person in a state of unconsciousness.
The walls, floor, and ceiling were adorned with bizarre patterns. There were four individuals in the room, and as Chen Chuan intruded, their faces showed not fear but an indescribable madness.
One of them immediately turned his gun towards the bed, aiming at the unconscious person. But before he could pull the trigger, a pebble accurately struck his wrist, causing it to explode with a snap. Bone fragments protruded from the skin, and as the pistol fell to the ground, the man let out a cry of pain.
Chen Chuan, having thrown the pebble, continued walking forward. He lightly brushed the head of one person who rushed towards him, gently pushing it aside. Then, he lifted the belly of another person, propelling them both upwards. As he moved past the two, heading towards the last person still standing, their bodies were flung into the air.
One of them flew towards the opposite wall with a whoosh, hitting it with a dull thud and immediately falling silent. The other soared towards the ceiling, creating a ring of cracks upon impact, and then fell back down along with the chandelier above, smashing into silence.
Only then did the last person realize what was happening. Despite his panic, he seemed to be driven by some belief, and his expression turned crazed in an instant. He clenched his fists, ready to engage in hand-to-hand combat with Chen Chuan. However, before he could charge forward, a hand had already reached out and pressed against his forehead.
With a thud, his head slammed into the wall behind him, his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed.
The man with the broken wrist, despite the cold sweat on his forehead, endured the pain and bent down to pick up the gun. His eyes were filled with malice, but just as his hand touched the gun, a foot stepped on it with a crunch, crushing both his hand and the gun into powder.
Without waiting for his scream, Chen Chuan patted his head lightly with his palm, instantly silencing him. The man lay powerless on the ground.
Chen Chuan turned around and scanned the room once more. He confirmed that no one was pretending to be asleep, and only then did he relax slightly. Among the unconscious people, he found Min Lan, her face pale and cheeks sunken. She lay with her eyes tightly shut, but her breathing was still noticeable, and her body seemed mostly intact.
Assuming there were no other complications, her body's functions as a fighter should allow for a quick recovery.
Chen Chuan walked to the door, grasped the handle, and gently turned it. As the door opened, the Patrol Bureau and Secret Sect Review Bureau members stationed nearby became aware of his presence and immediately raised their guns. However, upon seeing Chen Chuan, they swiftly lowered their weapons.
Chen Chuan stepped out, nodded to the people outside, and then moved aside. The Patrol Bureau members and the Review Bureau personnel rushed into the room. Soon, a voice shouted from within, "Medical personnel, hurry up here!"
Seeing that the situation was under control, Chen Chuan descended the stairs and left the building. From the moment he entered until his departure, it took no more than three minutes to subdue everyone inside.
He returned to Director Lei's car and sat down.
Director Lei said, "It seems the situation has been resolved."
Chen Chuan nodded.
Director Lei continued, "Well, your commission is now complete. I will report to the Action Division and have it recorded in your file."
"Thank you, Director Lei," Chen Chuan expressed his gratitude.
Director Lei waved his hand, "This matter falls within my responsibilities; there's no need to thank me."
The two waited for a while longer, and then a team member descended the stairs and reported to Director Lei, "Sir, all the individuals have been captured. The scene has been photographed and sealed off. The people have been sent to the medical station, but some of them had their internal organs sold."
Director Lei explained to Chen Chuan, "This Secret Sect views people as resources to be exploited. They extract life force and sell the altered organs."
He then asked the team leader, "What are the identities of these individuals?"
The team leader replied, "They are just regular logistics personnel. According to the confessions just obtained, the altered organs of the three fighters already had buyers lined up, but recent changes in the situation prevented the sale from taking place."
Director Lei calmly assessed the situation, "The altered organs of fighters require professional equipment for preservation. This might be the reason they hadn't acted yet."
He inquired further, "Has the Patrol Bureau been informed?"
The team leader confirmed, "Yes, they have been notified. All necessary actions have been taken."
Director Lei instructed, "Station a team at the scene, and the rest of you can return."
"Yes, sir!"
The car window was rolled up, and the vehicle slowly started, heading back the way it came.
Director Lei spoke again, "It seems the 'Vitality Sect' you mentioned extracts life force. I wonder who the recipients of this life force are."
Director Lei's voice turned grave, "They are most likely the upper echelon of this cult. Judging by the number of people involved in the ritual, there's probably only one person, and he might still be hiding in Yangzhi."
"Chen Chuan spoke earnestly, 'Director Lei, if there's a need for students during the upcoming arrests, just give them a call.'
Director Lei nodded, then raised his hand, 'Enough of that. Did you know that Liu Zhan has been transferred from his original position, and a new person has been hired?'
Chen Chuan was curious, 'Where is he going?'
Director Lei looked at him and slowly replied, 'The Foreign Affairs Bureau. He'll still be a director there.'
Chen Chuan hadn't expected Liu Zhan to return to his original position after all the trouble he'd caused. He thought for a moment and said, 'Director Liu has always been adept at handling foreign affairs, so this position should suit him well.'
Director Lei agreed, 'You're right. There's no one in the Government Hall who understands foreign affairs better than him, so it's best to let him utilize his strengths.'
Chen Chuan smiled, thinking that this position should be very stable, the kind that could last until retirement. For most people, it would be a dream come true, but for a bureaucrat like Liu Zhan, it might be a torment.
Director Lei spoke up, 'You must come to my wedding with He Nan.'
'Of course, Director Lei,' Chen Chuan replied. 'Has the date been set?'
'It was supposed to be in October, but it seems like the work at the bureau never ends. He Nan is also a bit indecisive about it. I've known her for many years, and she's always been decisive in important matters, but when it comes to her own affairs, she hesitates.'
'Perhaps it's because she cares too much,' Chen Chuan suggested.
Director Lei glanced at him, 'That's not something you'd expect from someone your age, but you're right...' He looked ahead, 'Sometimes, when you care too much, it becomes difficult to make decisions.'
The car arrived at the school gate, and Director Lei bid farewell, and Chen Chuan returned to the school.
...
After a brief moment, another twenty days passed, and by late September, the turmoil in Yangzhi City gradually subsided. Normal news began to air on the radio.
On September 27th, Chen Chuan received a call from Old Feng. On the other end, Old Feng's tone was relaxed, 'Student Chen Chuan, come out for a bit, and bring your summoning form.'
'Sure,' Chen Chuan replied. He retrieved the form and left the school, heading to the gate where Old Feng's car was parked. Old Feng was waiting in the back seat. Chen Chuan approached, greeted him, and got into the car.
As the car started, Old Feng asked, 'Have you thought about the application form Commissioner Cao asked you to fill out?'
'Yes,' Chen Chuan answered.
'Let me see it.'
Chen Chuan took out the application form from his pocket and handed it over. Most of the items he requested were medicines, and some of them, after consulting with Cheng Zitong, were only available from the Great Prosperity Republic government. These medicines would be very beneficial for his upcoming combat practice.
Apart from medicines, there was also a high-quality protective suit. Once he obtained the armor permit, he could wear it.
Old Feng reviewed the form and commented, 'You're asking for too little. Commissioner Cao has been well-fed this time. Is that sword of yours forged using ancient methods?'
'Yes,' Chen Chuan confirmed. 'It was gifted to me by a skilled predecessor who excels in crafting weapons.'
Old Feng took out a pen and added a few more medicines to the list. 'Medicines can be used to cultivate one's life force, and these ancient 'forbidden weapons' can also be maintained with medicines. I've added a few specialized medicines for soldier strengthening, which are only available within the Great Prosperity Republic government.'
He then added a model number to the protective suit and handed the form back to Chen Chuan, instructing, 'Give this to Commissioner Cao.'
Chen Chuan smiled, took the form, folded it, and put it back in his pocket.
As the car drove on and entered the Patrol Bureau Headquarters, the patrol officers on both sides saluted in unison. Chen Chuan noticed that the atmosphere was more solemn compared to his previous visit, and people were no longer rushing around.
After parking the car, the two men walked inside and reached the previous operation conference room, where Commissioner Cao stood alone, as if waiting specifically for them.
Chen Chuan stepped forward and placed the summoning form on the table. Commissioner Cao glanced at it and asked, 'Did you bring the application form?'
Chen Chuan took out the form from his pocket and placed it on the table as well.
Commissioner Cao picked up the form and recognized the familiar handwriting. He looked up at Old Feng, who returned his gaze, but neither said anything. Commissioner Cao took out a fountain pen and wrote 'Approved' on the form, then signed his name on the summoning form.
He then took out his seal and stamped both documents. Pushing them forward, he said, 'I'll keep the summoning form for records, and you can keep this one for yourself.'
After Chen Chuan took the forms, Commissioner Cao addressed him, 'Student Chen, the national summoning has concluded, and you are now free to act as you please. Remember, those not involved in this operation are not to discuss the specific details. If the nation requires your services again, we will summon you, so please be prepared.'
Old Feng added, 'The usual period is one year, but emergency situations are an exception, and we will provide compensation. Well, Student Chen, now that the summoning is over, don't linger here. I'll take you to the warehouse to collect your items.'
