Chapter 210: The Rai Kage Arrives
Chapter 210: The Rai Kage Arrives
Located in the western region of the River Country, Mikatsuki and her disciples noticed a significant change in the landscape as they approached Mikawa Town—the vegetation became sparse, a stark contrast to the abundant forests of the Fire Country.
"The scenery here is certainly unique," Obito commented with interest.
The lush greenery of the Fire Country had become monotonous to him, but the northern regions of the River Country offered a novel experience.
"If we go further west, we'll even find deserts," Mikatsuki added with a smile. "But first, we have a mission to complete."
The thought of exploring a desert excited Obito, even if it was just for sightseeing.
"Yes! Let's finish the mission and enjoy the view," he said, a hint of enthusiasm in his voice.
"It would be great if we had a camera to capture these moments and show them to Lin," Obito said, thinking of his cousin, Nohara Lin, back in Konoha.
Obito wished he could take on A-rank missions every day, but the reality was that he didn't have enough money. Cameras were expensive, and while he had earned some money from missions during his internship, he had also set aside a substantial amount to buy a gift for Teacher Mikatsuki and to support his grandmother.
Mikatsuki led them to meet the client in Mikawa Town to gather detailed information about the mission.
The client was a middle-aged man in his forties, and from their conversation, Mikatsuki learned that this was a collectively funded mission initiated by the residents of Mikawa Town and nearby villages.
"This group of mountain bandits has been rampant in our town and the nearby Mount Suya for months, committing robberies and home invasions," the middle-aged client sighed. "We hired samurai to deal with them before, but they couldn't find the bandits and returned empty-handed."
"Don't worry, sir," Obito assured him. "We ninjas are far more capable than samurai. Dealing with these mountain bandits will be a breeze."
The middle-aged man studied Obito carefully, his expression doubtful. Obito's appearance—that of an innocent, naive child—did not inspire confidence.
Among the group, the man thought that only the adult, Mikatsuki, and the silent child wearing a mask seemed capable.
"Rest assured, we will handle this swiftly," Mikatsuki smiled reassuringly.
A mere band of mountain bandits was no concern to her; her Byakugan saw everything, and they could not hope to hide.
"We are counting on you, ninja-sama," the middle-aged man bowed. "Please resolve this issue as soon as possible. We are fortunate here in town, but the villages near Mount Suya live in constant fear."
Following the client's instructions, Mikatsuki and her group made their way to Mount Suya, not far from Mikawa Town.
The mountain loomed taller and more treacherous than the one they had visited in the northern region of the River Country.
However, to these ninjas, even the most formidable mountain was no obstacle. With their chakra-enhanced abilities, they could scale walls and leap across great distances with ease.
Upon arriving at the mountain, they indeed found signs of habitation but no people.
"Could it be that the mountain bandits happened to be elsewhere today?" Might Guy looked around, perplexed at the absence of any bandits.
"There are people here, but they're hiding," Mikatsuki shook her head.
These bandits were indeed crafty. It seemed they had received word of their coming and had dispersed to hide.
If they had encountered ordinary ninjas without canine summons or tracking abilities, they might have gotten away with it.
But their luck had run out. Against Mikatsuki, there was no point in hiding. With her Byakugan, she had seen them long before they even set foot on the mountain.
"Something's not right," Kakashi frowned, sensing something amiss. "If they were hiding in a hurry, there should be signs of their passage."
"I've spotted some of them," Mikatsuki said. "Let's capture them and get some answers."
Soon after, Mikatsuki and her disciples located the hidden bandits.
Some of the bandits, seeing the youthful appearances of Obito and Kakashi, attempted to kidnap them to bargain with Mikatsuki. Their plans were swiftly thwarted—Might Guy kicked one in the face, sending his teeth flying, while Obito burned others with his fire jutsu.
"Who's your leader, and where are the others hiding?" Mikatsuki demanded.
"If you don't talk, you'll get to eat fireballs," Obito threatened, flames dancing in his hand.
"Let's split up and interrogate them. Someone will surely be willing to talk," Mu Yue said, a slight smile playing on her lips.
She then divided the mountain bandits into six groups and separated them for questioning, with each of her three disciples interrogating one group, while she herself created two shadow clones to question three groups simultaneously.
"We will never betray our brothers," one of the mountain bandits defiantly replied to Mu Yue's questioning.
At that moment, one of Mu Yue's shadow clones walked over and said, "The ones I interrogated confessed. Some of the bandits are hiding in secret passages within the cave, and..."
The determined expression on the mountain bandit's face instantly faltered as he realized that someone had indeed given away their hiding spot. "I'll tell you everything! Please spare my life! There are four of them hiding in the cave's secret passage, and..."
Fearing that he would lose his value if he didn't speak quickly enough, the mountain bandit blurted out everything he knew about the hiding places.
Mu Yue's expression remained unchanged, her acting skills on point. She had actually left that particular group of bandits untouched, knowing they were there but choosing not to act until this very moment.
"Everyone else has already confessed to this. If this is all you have to offer, you can go die," Mu Yue said coldly, brandishing a kunai and moving to stab the mountain bandit's neck.
"Wait, I have more information! There are villagers who collaborate with us, providing intelligence so we can carry out precise robberies and avoid ambushes!" The mountain bandit's eyes widened in fear at the sharp kunai, and he quickly tried to buy himself more time.
Mu Yue paused, her movement halted. She wasn't too surprised by this revelation; it wasn't unusual for desperate villagers to turn to banditry or collaborate with them during difficult times.
However, she didn't take his words at face value. She used the same tactic on the remaining bandits and eventually concluded that the first bandit she had interrogated was indeed telling the truth.
After capturing all the mountain bandits, Mu Yue separated them once more and had them identify each other's crimes. Those with minor offenses and those who provided valuable information were spared, but Mu Yue ended up killing most of the bandits. She then captured the villagers who had collaborated with the bandits and handed them all over to the client.
"This is the situation," Mu Yue said to the client. "How you choose to deal with them is up to you."
"Thank you so much!" The client expressed his gratitude, surprised at how quickly Mu Yue and her team had resolved the issue of the troublesome mountain bandits.
"Those mountain bandits are despicable," Obito said angrily as they left Mikawa Town. "Instead of working hard and earning an honest living, they choose to rob and hurt others."
He had been infuriated listening to Mu Yue interrogate the bandits about their crimes, especially those who had not only stolen but also harmed people.
"Yes, it's infuriating," Might Guy agreed, sharing Obito's anger after hearing about so many dark topics.
Kakashi remained silent. He had undertaken similar missions to suppress mountain bandits in the past, and they had always ended with the bandits being slain. Somehow, he felt angrier this time around.
"Since we're angry, we should work harder to cultivate and make the world a better place. But that requires tremendous strength," Mu Yue said, gazing up at the sky.
Following their previous plan, Mu Yue then led her disciples westward, eventually reaching a desert of golden sand.
Obito marveled at the endless expanse of golden sand, devoid of any vegetation. The only colors that met his eyes were the yellow of the sand and the blue of the sky.
"This is amazing! So much sand!" Obito exclaimed, his anger soothed somewhat by the wonders of nature.
Out of curiosity, he stuck his hand into the sand and was surprised to find it unusually hot. He then pulled Might Guy and Kakashi over and had them feel the heat as well.
As Mu Yue contemplated whether to stay in the area for a few days to train her students before returning, she suddenly noticed a yellow mist rising from the desert, and someone running through it.
Mu Yue activated her Byakugan to observe the situation more clearly, and her eyes widened in surprise. "Obito was right. It's the Rai Kage, but it's the future Rai Kage," she muttered.
