Chapter 210: Rescue
Chapter 210: Rescue
Upon entering the room, Chen Chuan's gaze swept across the area, revealing a crudely furnished large space. Where there should have been a desk, there were instead several steel-framed bunk beds, each occupied by a person in a state of unconsciousness.
The walls, floor, and ceiling were adorned with bizarre patterns. There were four individuals in total, and upon Chen Chuan's intrusion, their faces showed no fear, only an indescribable madness.
One of them immediately turned his gun towards the person lying on the bed, but before he could pull the trigger, a pebble precisely landed on his wrist. His wrist instantly snapped, and bone fragments protruded through his skin. As the gun fell to the ground, he let out a painful cry.
Chen Chuan, having just thrown the pebble, took a step forward, lightly brushing his hand against the head of one of the charging individuals, gently pushing it back. He then reached out and lifted the stomach of another person beside him. As he moved past the two, rushing towards the last person still standing, their bodies were flung into the air.
One of them seemed to be forcefully pushed, flying towards the opposite wall with a swish. A dull thud sounded from the wall, and they immediately became silent. The other flew towards the ceiling, creating a circle of cracks upon impact, and then fell back down along with the chandelier above, landing in a heap and remaining motionless.
It was only then that the last person seemed to realize what was happening. Despite his panic, he appeared to be sustained by some belief, his expression turning crazed in an instant. He clenched his fists, intending to engage Chen Chuan in hand-to-hand combat. However, before he could charge forward, a hand had already reached out and pressed against his forehead.
A loud thud resonated as his head slammed into the wall behind him, his eyes rolling back as he collapsed.
The man with the broken wrist, despite the cold sweat on his forehead, endured the pain and bent down to pick up the gun. His eyes were filled with malice, but just as his hand touched the gun, a foot stepped on it, crushing his hand and the gun into a powder.
Before he could scream, Chen Chuan lightly patted the top of his head with his palm, instantly silencing him. The man lay powerless on the ground.
Chen Chuan turned around and scanned the room, ensuring no one was pretending to be unconscious. Only then did he relax slightly, and among the people lying there, he found Min Lan. Her face was pale, her cheeks sunken, and her eyes tightly shut. However, she was still breathing, and her body appeared mostly intact.
Assuming there were no other complications, as a fighter, she should recover quickly.
Chen Chuan walked to the door, grabbed the handle, and gently turned it. The patrol bureau and secret sect review bureau members stationed near the corridor entrance immediately raised their guns upon noticing the movement. But upon seeing Chen Chuan, they quickly lowered their weapons.
He stepped out and nodded to the people outside. The patrolmen and review bureau members immediately rushed into the room. A loud voice soon echoed from within, "Medical personnel, get up here quickly!"
Seeing that the situation was under control, Chen Chuan descended the stairs. From the time he entered the building until he came out, it had only taken three to four minutes to subdue everyone inside. The task that took the most time was actually going downstairs.
He returned to Director Lei's car and sat down.
Director Lei said, "It seems the issue has been resolved."
Chen Chuan nodded.
Director Lei continued, "Well then, your commission is complete. I'll report to the action team and register it."
Chen Chuan expressed his gratitude, "Thank you, Director Lei."
Director Lei waved his hand, "This was within my duties; you don't need to thank me."
After a brief wait, a team member descended and reported to Director Lei, "Director, we've apprehended everyone. All the evidence at the scene has been photographed and filed, and the people have been sent to the medical station. However, some of them had their internal organs sold."
Director Lei explained to Chen Chuan, "These secret sects view people as resources to be exploited. Aside from extracting life energy, they can also sell the organs of the dying."
He inquired of the team leader, "Who are these people?"
The team leader replied, "They're just ordinary logistics personnel. According to their confessions, the organs of the three fighters had already found buyers. However, due to recent changes in the situation, they hadn't been sold yet."
Director Lei calmly assessed, "The extracted alien tissue from fighters requires professional equipment for preservation. Perhaps that's why they hadn't acted yet."
He asked, "Has the patrol bureau been informed?"
The team leader responded, "Yes, we've informed them. Everything that needed to be handled has been taken care of."
Director Lei instructed, "Have a team stand guard at the scene, and the rest of you can return."
"Yes, sir!"
The car window was raised, and the vehicle slowly started, heading back the way it came.
Director Lei said, "Your classmate should be fine."
Chen Chuan hoped, "I hope the others are okay too."
Director Lei's voice carried a hint of heaviness, "As long as these sects exist, such incidents are inevitable. We can only strive to detect them promptly and do our best to prevent them."
Chen Chuan paused, then asked, "Director Lei, you mentioned the 'Life Sect' extracts people's life energy. I wonder who are the recipients of this energy?"
Director Lei spoke in a deep voice, "The upper echelon of this cult is likely involved. Judging by the number of people conducting the ritual, there's probably only one person, and he's possibly still hiding in Yangzhi."
Chen Chuan replied earnestly, "Director Lei, if there's any need for students during the upcoming arrests, just give us a call."
Director Lei nodded, then raised his hand, "Let's not discuss this further. Do you know that Liu Zhan has been transferred from his original position and a new person has been appointed?"
Chen Chuan couldn't help but ask, "Where is he going?"
Director Lei looked at him and slowly said, "The Foreign Affairs Bureau. He'll still be a director."
Chen Chuan was surprised that Liu Zhan had returned to his original position after all the trouble. After some thought, he said, "Director Liu has always handled foreign affairs with ease. This position is probably suitable for him."
Director Lei agreed, "You're right. No one in the Government Hall is more familiar with foreign affairs than him, so they decided to let him utilize his strengths."
Chen Chuan smiled. This position was likely very stable, the kind that could last until retirement, a dream come true for most people. But for a bureaucrat like Liu Zhan, it might be a torment.
At this moment, Director Lei said, "You must attend my wedding with He Nan."
Chen Chuan replied, "Of course, Director Lei. Has the date been set?"
"It was originally scheduled for October, but it seems the Bureau's work is still ongoing, and He Nan is also undecided. I've known her for many years, and she's always been decisive about major matters, but when it comes to her own affairs, she's always hesitant."
Chen Chuan said, "Perhaps she cares too much, Director."
Director Lei glanced at him, "That's not something someone your age should say, but you're right..." He looked ahead, "Sometimes, when you care too much, it becomes difficult to make decisions."
The car soon arrived at the school gate. After bidding farewell to Director Lei, Chen Chuan returned to the school.
In the blink of an eye, more than twenty days passed. By the end of September, the disturbances in Yangzhi City gradually subsided, and normal news began to air on the radio.
On September 27th, Chen Chuan received a call from Old Feng. On the other end, Old Feng spoke casually, "Chen Chuan, come out for a bit, and bring your draft notice."
Chen Chuan agreed, took the notice, and left the school. He found Old Feng's car parked outside the gate, with Old Feng waiting in the back seat. Chen Chuan greeted him and got into the car.
Once the car was moving, Old Feng said, "Have you thought about the application form that Commissioner Cao asked you to fill out?"
"Yes," Chen Chuan replied.
"Let me see it."
Chen Chuan took out the application form from his pocket and handed it over. Most of the items he requested were medications, some of which he had inquired about with Cheng Zitong. These were drugs that only the Dongshun Republic could provide and would be very beneficial for his upcoming combat cultivation.
In addition to the medications, there was also a high-grade protective armor, which he could use once he obtained the armor permit.
Old Feng looked over the form and said, "You're asking for too little. You don't have to save Commissioner Cao any trouble. He's had a good run this time. Is that sword of yours crafted using ancient methods?"
"Yes," Chen Chuan replied, "It was gifted to me by a senior who was skilled in forging knives."
Old Feng took out a pen and added a few more medications to the list. "People use medications for cultivation, and these so-called 'forbidden weapons' can also be nurtured with drugs. The ones I added are specifically for nurturing and strengthening weapons, and they're only available within the Dongshun Republic."
He then added a model number to the protective armor and handed the form back to Chen Chuan, reminding him, "Give this to Commissioner Cao when you see him."
Chen Chuan smiled, took the form, folded it, and placed it back in his chest pocket.
The car drove into the headquarters of the Patrol Bureau, and the patrolmen on both sides saluted in unison. Chen Chuan noticed that the surroundings were much more orderly than before, no longer bustling with people coming and going.
After parking the car, the two walked inside and headed for the previous operations meeting room. Commissioner Cao stood there alone, as if waiting specifically for them.
Chen Chuan approached and placed the draft notice on the table. Commissioner Cao glanced at it and asked, "Did you bring the application form?"
Chen Chuan took out the form from his chest pocket and placed it on the table as well.
Commissioner Cao picked up the form and looked it over. Recognizing the familiar handwriting, he glanced at Old Feng, who returned the gaze. Without saying a word, Commissioner Cao took out a steel pen and wrote 'Approved' on the form, then signed his name on the draft notice.
He then took out a seal and stamped it on both documents, pushing them forward, "I'll keep the draft notice for our records. You can keep this copy."
After Chen Chuan took the form, Commissioner Cao looked at him and said solemnly, "Chen Chuan, the national draft has concluded. You are now free to act as you please. Remember, those not involved in this operation must not discuss the specifics with outsiders. If the need arises, we will draft you again, so please be prepared."
Old Feng added from the side, "Usually, the interval is one year, but emergencies are an exception. In such cases, we will provide compensation. Alright, Chen Chuan, the draft is over, so don't linger here. I'll take you to the warehouse to collect your items."
