Chapter 209: Not the Right Fit
Chapter 209: Not the Right Fit
"Milah, we're taking this mission." Leibi handed over a commission form, signaling that the Lane Engine Squad was about to set out again.
Due to Jett's injury, they hadn't been out for quite some time.
Leibi had taken on some simple jobs to bring in some income, but Troy was really struggling to make ends meet.
Jett, who had additional expenses from his hospital stay, was even more eager to earn some money now that his leg was healed.
"Let me see." Milah carefully examined the form. It was a mission to investigate a theft at the library.
"The risk is low, but since it's a two-week-old case, it's quite challenging. Are you sure you want to take this one?"
"Because it's related to books, we want to give it a try," Leibi explained. "And the reward is pretty good."
Jett confidently added, "No problem. This time, I'll show everyone what I can do!"
Troy mercilessly shot him down, "You said the same thing last time, and you ended up in the hospital."
"Can you stop bringing that up!" Jett fumed. "This time, it's just a petty thief. No one can outrun me!"
Troy retorted, "Idiot, did you even understand the key point? Catching the thief is less important than finding him."
"Stop arguing, you two..." Leibi looked helplessly at Milah. "Please, Milah, we need to work. If we don't, we'll be worrying about rent again in a few days."
"Alright, Rhod?"
"Right away." Rhod scribbled a few notes in the register, then found two documents and handed them over.
Milah looked down and handed the documents to Leibi along with the commission form. "Here are the clues provided by the client. You can look them over on the way. Good luck."
"Thanks~" Leibi took them but didn't rush to leave. Instead, she stared at the two people behind the counter.
"What's up?" Milah asked, "Is there something else you need to ask?"
Rhod also inquired, "Do you need backup? But adding another person would lower the reward."
He had just checked, and the reward was only 100,000 J. While it might be nice to work with Leibi's team, it was too little.
Rhod felt a bit overconfident, having completed two high-difficulty missions recently, and now he couldn't even be bothered with a 25,000 J reward.
He needed to reflect on whether he should adjust his mindset.
"That's not the issue," Leibi waved her hand, looking a bit nosy at Milah.
"I just suddenly feel like you two have great chemistry... Hey, Milah, did something happen while we weren't around?"
By now, Milah could maintain a calm expression when asked. "Nothing happened. Rhod might just be more proficient in his work."
Leibi turned to Rhod, "Is that so?"
Rhod grinned and nodded, "Yeah, nothing happened."
"Strange..." Leibi muttered as she left, clearly not fully convinced.
Rhod finished his tasks and checked the time. "About done. I'm heading to the back yard."
Milah nodded, "Okay."
Rhod didn't move, "I'm going to the back yard."
"Um..." Milah looked at Rhod, and when their eyes met, she saw his full of smiles. She scolded, "Go on, then!"
Rhod finally slipped to the back yard.
He warmed up, did some push-ups, pull-ups, and hit the punching bag for a while. Suddenly, he stopped and summoned Worm.
"Phew~" Worm looked at him with hopeful eyes. Was the big meal about to be served?
Rhod squatted down, patted its head, and asked thoughtfully, "Do you think I've become dumber and more childish?"

Chapter 210: A Big Meal
"Phew?" This question didn't need asking. Worm felt its owner might as well ask if it was hungry.
"You only think about eating." Rhod took out a large bill and placed it on Worm's head. "Eat whatever you want."
Worm ran off with the bill, afraid its owner might change his mind.
Soon, the bill was in Milah's hands: "He gave you this?"
"Phew~" Worm nodded with effort.
"Spending money recklessly." Milah muttered under her breath, then patted Worm's head and smiled, "How about I ask Mr. Cook to make you a big meal?"
"Phew~" Worm was so happy it rolled over, falling off the counter.
It got up and continued bouncing, its excellent cushioning making the fall painless.
...
"Here."
At lunchtime, Milah returned the bill to Rhod.
"This was for Worm's meal..."
Milah said, "I fed Worm, but we didn't need this much."
In a regular restaurant, four or five thousand J was enough for a particularly lavish meal for two or three people.
Rhod handing out ten thousand J was considered wasteful.
"Oh..." Rhod held the bill and thought for a moment, "Then how about I treat you to dinner tonight?"
"No." Milah noticed the disappointed look and looked away, "In a few days."
Going today felt like she was shortchanging Worm's meal. She would feed it a bit more over the next few days.
"Alright." Rhod was in a good mood, turning to the two onlookers, "You two, why are the expressions of the people listening to us more varied than ours?"
The ones eating the staff meal were of course Rachie and today's shift worker, Sally.
These two had been whispering all morning, and by noon, they were almost communicating with their faces.
Rachie said, "How can you blame us? We thought Milah would finally reject you this time."
"Exactly, exactly."
"Plus, you two have been acting strange since this morning. It feels like you're turning into Alzack and Bisca."
"Exactly, exactly."
Alzack and Bisca had been spending a lot of time together lately, teaming up for missions and sitting at the same table for meals. They blushed after just two words and turned even redder when someone said, "You two have a great relationship."
But neither would confess, and the onlookers were getting anxious.
Now these two seemed to be heading in the same direction.
Rhod looked at Milah and countered, "We're not like them."
Rachie was about to ask how they were different when the guild door was kicked open: "We're back!"
"Back, love!"
Milah put down her utensils and smiled, "Welcome back, Natsu, Happy. Don't kick the door, please."
Natsu hurriedly said, "That doesn't matter, Milah, introduce me to the next job!"
"Alright..." Milah started to stand but was pressed back down by Rhod.
"Natsu, let Milah finish her meal first. She didn't eat much this morning..."
Happy hid behind Natsu's shoulder, "Got a leg (click tongue)."
Rhod ignored him and asked, "Just got back, why are you in such a hurry to find a new job?"
"Because we're about to run out of money for food!" Natsu was in a panic, "We need to complete a job today!"
"Love! It's because Natsu accidentally set the mast on fire while breaking the ice for a merchant ship, and we had to pay all the compensation."
Happy looked pitiful, "If we don't work soon, we'll have to catch fish in the river ourselves."
