Chapter 208: Cangling Debate of Swords (16)
Chapter 208: Cangling Debate of Swords (16)
The face could be perfectly described as horrifying.
Visually, it resembled a hag who had lived over 300 years and kept aging relentlessly.
To put it bluntly, Feng Bu Jue couldn’t even bring himself to comment on its appearance—his mind conjured only cruel words, so he settled for a more tactful sigh: “It’s like a gruesome car crash scene…” He widened his eyes, shaking his head. “I can’t even look away.”
The owner of the grotesque face behind the tree clearly belonged to the “Monster” category. These beings, pre-set by the system as hostile to players, selectively ignored certain player dialogues. Terms like “sci-fi,” “worldview,” or “car crash” from Feng Bu Jue’s mouth meant nothing to this monster. It offered no reaction, nor did these words trigger any flags or alter its behavior.
“Are you… looking for the ‘ringing temple’?” the monstrous face asked.
“Exactly,” Feng Bu Jue replied immediately.
Si Yu shot Feng Bu Jue a sidelong glance, inwardly impressed. Just two seconds ago, he’d never even heard the term ‘ringing temple,’ yet he’s answering with such confidence, not a hint of deception on his face…
“Hehehe…” The face cackled. Then, from behind the tree trunk, came a ding ling… ding ling… bell chime.
“You don’t have a bell. How do you expect to find it?” The monster raised its arm, emerging slightly from the tree trunk. Now visible, it wore a plain white robe. From the exposed sleeves, the garment appeared clean and neatly kept.
Feng Bu Jue had imagined its arm would be wrapped in Putrid mummy bandages, but this was unexpected. He didn’t dwell on the clothing, though—his eyes were instantly drawn to the bell in its hand.
It was a small bell, cup-sized, gleaming silver. Sunlight filtering through the tree canopy struck it, reflecting blinding flashes.
“So having your bell lets us find the ringing temple?” Feng Bu Jue asked.
“Yes,” the monster replied. “You need the bell to locate the temple gate. Want it?”
“Oh? So you’re giving it to me?” Feng Bu Jue pressed.
“Of course, hehehe…” The face laughed again. In its own way, it looked even more terrifying when smiling. “Come take it, and it’s yours.”
“Hehehe… Great.” Feng Bu Jue grinned broadly, pulling his Folding Stool from his satchel.
The monster seemed momentarily confused, perhaps failing to recognize the object as a weapon. Only when Feng Bu Jue approached within three meters did it belatedly ask, “Wait… What’s that you’re holding?”
“Oh, this?” Feng Bu Jue answered calmly. “A stool.”
“What do you need a stool for?”
“I’ve been standing too long. I want to sit down,” Feng Bu Jue said. “Once I get the bell, I’ll take a break.”
The monster’s face twisted with suspicion. “Fine… Come closer…”
Si Yu stood her ground, watching the scene unfold. She couldn’t help but feel amused. Only Feng Bu Jue could inject humor into such a tense atmosphere. Still, she remained alert—should the monster attack suddenly, she’d intervene in an instant.
Feng Bu Jue reached the tree quickly. With each step, he shifted his weight to his rear foot. The leg he extended forward first touched the ground with the toes, tapping a few times before fully stepping down. Only after confirming no traps or collapsing ground did he proceed.
“What are you doing now?” the monster asked.
“Stretching my legs to check for any issues,” Feng Bu Jue replied.
“You don’t know if your legs are fine?” The monster’s expression turned fierce. “Are you suspecting I set a trap?”
“Not at all,” Feng Bu Jue said calmly. “You can’t know if your legs work until you walk a bit.” He suddenly mimicked Michael Jackson’s moonwalk, sliding backward a few steps. “See? This is ‘walking a bit’…”
Si Yu finally let out a stifled laugh.
The monster stared, bewildered. What was that? How did he move backward while walking forward?!
“Hurry up! Do you want the bell or not?!” The monster’s eyes and tone brimmed with obvious impatience and greed.
Feng Bu Jue, analyzing its expressions and scanning the environment, had mostly ruled out traps. The problem must be with the tree itself.
“May I ask… why you’re hiding behind the tree?” Feng Bu Jue asked.
“Come see for yourself, and you’ll know,” the monster replied.
Feng Bu Jue was already close. A few lateral steps would reveal the tree trunk’s hidden side. But as he prepared to sidestep, the monster caught on and snapped, “Don’t move! What are you doing over there?!”
“Just checking why you’re hiding behind the tree,” Feng Bu Jue answered, circling sideways while maintaining distance, determined to glimpse the trunk’s other side.
Unexpectedly, the monster mirrored his movement, staying flush against the trunk, still revealing only its head and arm.
“No circling around!” The monster threatened as the situation turned dire. “Approach straight along the tree trunk, or I’ll destroy the bell!”
The monster overlooked one thing: as it adjusted its hiding angle to match Feng Bu Jue’s movements, Si Yu had already entered its blind spot. In that moment, Si Yu sprang into action, swiftly and silently circling to the other side of the trunk.
From Feng Bu Jue’s vantage point, he could see Si Yu’s movements clearly. Yet his expression and gaze betrayed nothing—no tension, no guilt.
“I’m coming now! Really!” Feng Bu Jue raised his voice, spouting deliberate nonsense to buy time and cover for Si Yu. “I’m striding right over~” He dragged out the words comically, not moving an inch.
In truth, Si Yu needed no amusing cover. Within ten seconds, she had already stealthily reached the monster’s current hiding spot.
The sight that met her eyes sent a jolt through her heart, her delicate brows furrowing. She immediately called out to Feng Bu Jue, “Her head and one arm are all! Her neck and arm are growing straight out of the tree! Don’t get near that tree!”
