Chapter 204: Taking a Tumble
Chapter 204: Taking a Tumble
Aunt Xiang didn't catch what SuSu said, but seeing the girl's face turn pale, her lips losing color, she immediately scooped SuSu up and rushed towards Doctor Liu.
Nuan Xia and Nuan Dong were at the Western Court today, tidying up the chambers. The Princess had already discussed with the Prince to allocate the southernmost chamber to SuSu.
That place would become SuSu's space from now on.
Whether she lived there or not, the room needed to be spruced up, and the storerooms needed to be organized. The Princess intended to transfer SuSu's personal belongings there, making it more convenient for management and upkeep.
Aunt Xiang thought that nothing untoward would happen within the mansion, so she assuredly let the two girls go about their task.
Now, even trying to summon someone to invite the doctor seemed impossible, leaving her no choice but to rush towards the front yard with SuSu in her arms.
Concubine Ren was initially listening to the two chambermaids gossiping about hair ornaments. Hearing the commotion and sensing that something was amiss, she quickly walked towards them. Before she could get a clear view, she felt a gust of wind pass before her eyes.
When she realized what was happening, she saw Qiao Zhi holding Che Lingzhi, crying as if her parents had died: "Concubine Ren, you must stand up for our girl! SuSu, she... she pushed our Lingzhi into the pond!"
Concubine Ren had no interest in dealing with Che Lingzhi's mother's people. Seeing Che Lingzhi's pale little face, she pointed in Aunt Xiang's direction: "I think instead of crying here, it's better to hold the child and go see the doctor first?"
Qiao Zhi had originally intended to take advantage of Che Lingzhi's pitiful state, hoping to gain some sympathy and take the upper hand. Now, hearing Concubine Ren's suggestion, she realized that the other party probably wouldn't fall for her act, and she could only grudgingly hold Che Lingzhi and follow Aunt Xiang.
Seeing this situation, Concubine Ren already had some suspicions in her mind.
However, she didn't consider herself an utterly despicable person, so she thought for a moment and said to the maid, Sun, who was following behind: "Go and ask around. See if anyone from our chambers witnessed what just happened. SuSu is such a good child; how could she possibly push someone into the water?"
Che Lingzhi, on the other hand, was a child full of mischief and always up to no good. Who knew what kind of scheme she had concocted?
Concubine Ren left the latter half of her sentence unspoken.
Maid Sun had already gone to find someone to inquire about the incident.
When Aunt Xiang rushed to Doctor Liu with SuSu in her arms, she startled him.
Although Aunt Xiang was anxious and annoyed, she maintained a shred of rationality.
She briefly explained SuSu's situation and then placed the girl on a small bed.
Liu Hezong had caught a cold a couple of days ago, so Doctor Liu didn't bring her into the mansion today, fearing that she might pass on the illness to SuSu.
Fortunately, Doctor Liu had his assistants, Di Jiao and the others, with him.
One of them nimbly ran towards the main court, while the other had already gone to fetch the medicine box.
Just as they were about to examine SuSu, they heard Feng Xuanrui's vigorous voice: "What happened to my sister?!"
As Feng Xuanrui spoke, he swiftly ran over.
Feng Xuanbin couldn't keep up and was panting as he trailed behind.
Although Feng Xuanbo looked frail, his stamina was quite good, and he closely followed Feng Xuanrui.
Seeing these three, Doctor Liu was taken aback for a moment. When he came to his senses, he pointed outside and said, "All three of you skipped class?"
Wouldn't that infuriate Teacher Shen?
Feng Xuanrui didn't have time to answer that question. After rushing over and seeing SuSu's pale face and closed eyes, he was so frightened that his own face turned white: "Doctor Liu, what happened to my sister?"
Feng Xuanbo lagged a little behind and was surprised to see SuSu's drenched clothes: "She fell into the water? How could she possibly fall into the water when she was fine just now?"
As he spoke, he began to take off his outer garment.
Upon seeing this, Feng Xuanrui also realized what had happened and began to take off his clothes.
Di Jiao had gone to get new clothes and hadn't returned yet. The young girl's clothes definitely needed changing.
Aunt Xiang went to the curtained room to temporarily use the clothes of the two brothers to change SuSu's wet clothes, then wrapped her up again and carried her out.
She then brought the blanket over and covered SuSu with it.
Qiao Zhi rushed over, crying loudly all the way: "SuSu pushed Lingzhi into the water!"
She was afraid that others might not know, so she wailed as she came.
When she reached Doctor Liu, Feng Xuanrui was annoyed and directly roared at her: "Shut up, little girl!"
Qiao Zhi was startled to find the mansion's young master present.
She wanted to speak with him, still holding Che Lingzhi, but Feng Xuanbo beat her to it: "Don't be angry, little six. If these disobedient maids upset you, we can beat and kill them later. It's not worth ruining your health over them."
At the mention of this, Qiao Zhi was so scared that she dared not even breathe heavily.
Doctor Liu was currently examining SuSu.
Qiao Zhi was anxious and wanted to push her way through, but the three young masters stood by the small bed, and as soon as Qiao Zhi moved, she was met with Feng Xuanrui's fierce gaze like that of a little lion.
Qiao Zhi was so scared that she dared not move.
She watched as Feng Xuanrui and his brothers took off their outer garments to cover SuSu, and she couldn't help but have a thought. With a forced smile, she said, "It's still a bit chilly. Doctor Liu, could you please provide a blanket to wrap the child? If not, some clothes would also do."
Feng Xuanrui and his brothers didn't even spare her a glance, their eyes fixed on SuSu, wanting to assess her condition.
Ignored by everyone, Qiao Zhi felt embarrassed and also worried about Che Lingzhi. Mustering her courage, she tried again, "Auntie really cares about Lingzhi. If this child..."
Before she could finish, an old blanket was thrown over her head, along with Feng Xuanbo's slightly cold voice, "You talk too much, and it's annoying."
Qiao Zhi: ...
SuSu's body was originally weak. Although she had gained some nourishment since coming to the mansion, her foundation was still too fragile.
She hadn't soaked in the medicinal bath for long, so its nourishing effects hadn't fully taken hold yet.
While the weather was getting hotter, the water was still cold.
After falling into the water and drinking quite a bit of it, SuSu's condition worried Doctor Liu. He examined her pulse and then helped her expel some water.
The water was spat out, and Doctor Liu carefully cleaned her up before feeling her pulse again and instructing Di Jiao to boil some medicine.
After tending to SuSu, Doctor Liu then carefully cleaned the young girl and only then turned to examine Che Lingzhi.
He only had this one small bed, usually used to store his tools.
After all, the mansion's young masters were typically examined in their own courtyards, so why would they need his bed?
Doctor Liu didn't seem to intend to bring in another bed, instead pointing to the side and saying, "You can sit there and hold the child."
Qiao Zhi wanted to argue, but the words died in her mouth as she saw Feng Xuanbo's smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
Qiao Zhi was so scared that she didn't dare to look up again and just obediently sat on the chair, holding Che Lingzhi.
Compared to the detailed care given to SuSu, Doctor Liu's examination of Che Lingzhi felt more like a routine check-up. After taking her pulse, he instructed Qiao Zhi, "Press on her abdomen and chest a few more times to expel any water. If there's no water accumulation, she should be fine. Di Jiao is boiling some medicine, so give her a bowl of it later."
Qiao Zhi wanted to say that she didn't know how to press properly, but Doctor Liu had already turned around and was busy with his herbs, showing no intention to help further.
Qiao Zhi felt wronged but dared not speak up, so she could only awkwardly help Che Lingzhi expel the water.
