Chapter 20: An Ordinary Father
Chapter 20: An Ordinary Father
Since the moment of his transmigration, Lu Wu had been striving.
He toiled to climb the ranks of professional Summoners, adapting to his new life and making gradual changes.
For Lu Wu, the most challenging transformation was undoubtedly his relationship with his family.
Due to his transmigration, he constantly felt a sense of guilt, like a nest robber.
This feeling lingered, causing him to subconsciously avoid Li Ruyu during his initial days in the new world, even considering the idea of leaving his family altogether.
However, as time passed, especially after Lu Wu realized that his actions had hurt Li Ruyu, he began to awaken slowly. He understood that while this approach was convenient for him, it was also extremely irresponsible.
It was even more despicable than how he had treated Pang Dudu.
So, Lu Wu decided to change his mindset, no longer avoiding Li Ruyu, and attempting to transform his guilt into a different emotional force. He wanted to care for and make up for the neglect his previous self had shown to his family.
The midnight snack he brought back for Li Ruyu was the first step in his transformation.
But Lu Wu never could have imagined what would have happened if he hadn't taken that step.
If he hadn't made the effort to change, he might have limped home that night.
He only knew that when he returned home and brought Li Ruyu her favorite snack, 'Sky Silkworm Potato,' as he remembered it, her emotions overflowed once more, and for the first time since his arrival, her eyes reddened in front of him.
Witnessing this, Lu Wu finally understood the extent of his misdeeds during his time in this new world.
An indescribable emotion surged within him, leaving the usually eloquent Lu Wu momentarily speechless. He could only scratch his head, telling Li Ruyu to finish her snack and rest early before retreating to his room as he typically did.
However, this time, as Li Ruyu watched Lu Wu retreat to his room, she couldn't help but smile.
Well, women are actually quite easy to please, especially those closest to you. No matter how much you might upset them, a slight change in your attitude or a small gesture of kindness can bring them happiness for an entire day.
Lu HaiKong, who had been following Lu Wu closely, returned home to find his wife with a blissful, silly smile on her face. He couldn't help but raise his eyebrows, his mood lightening. The initial impulse to break Lu Wu's sycophantic legs faded.
Yet, Lu HaiKong still felt a sense of unease, considering how Lu Wu had made his wife cry.
So, after putting his wife to sleep, Lu HaiKong knocked on Lu Wu's door around midnight.
"Dad?" Lu Wu, who was about to sleep, opened the door to find Lu HaiKong looking bewildered.
"Come on, son, let's go for a drink!" Lu HaiKong pulled his son, who was still in a daze, out quietly, finding a still-open grill stand for a drinking session.
"Dad, it's so late, isn't this inappropriate? I'm still a student, and I have work tomorrow!" Lu Wu protested.
He had known that Lu HaiKong would be returning home, but he had pretended not to know, thinking he had avoided the confrontation. He never expected to be dragged out in the middle of the night.
Moreover, seeing Lu HaiKong order a large amount of food and two beers, seemingly intent on getting drunk, made Lu Wu anxious.
"Why are you nervous? A real man can drink through the night! I don't recall raising you to be a coward!" Lu HaiKong passed Lu Wu a drink, even before the food arrived.
This unreliable father was no different from Lu Wu's previous memories.
He started by offering Lu Wu a drink, not even waiting for the food to arrive before downing his beer.
It was clear he intended to get Lu Wu drunk, but Lu Wu dared not succumb.
Lu Wu was in a dilemma; he had to work the next day, and he feared that if he got too drunk, he might say something he'd regret. So, he tried his best to decline, using every excuse he could think of.
Lu Hai Kong tried to persuade him to drink, even using his status as a father to pressure him, but to no avail.
Enraged, Hai Kong cursed at Wu, calling him a coward and a disgrace.
Wu, taking small sips of his drink, felt helpless. He had never seen a father drag his son out for a drinking session in the middle of the night, only to end up cursing him when the persuasion failed.
But Wu had no choice; he was dealing with his father, after all. So, he endured the scolding.
However, just as Wu thought he'd have to bear the brunt of the criticism all night, Hai Kong, after a few bottles, seemed to get drunk. He moved closer to Wu, his words slurring as he asked, "Son, do you resent me and your mother?"
"No! Why would you think that?" Wu replied.
"Don't lie! Your thoughts are written all over your face. You resent us for being useless, for holding you back, for making you summon such a creature, and for not being able to support you financially as much as you'd like. You've been studying hard and looking for work, all because you think we're not dependable, and you want to rely on yourself, right?"
Wu was taken aback; he genuinely hadn't thought that way.
Hai Kong didn't give Wu a chance to explain. "You don't need to say anything. Just listen!"
Hai Kong grabbed Wu's hand and placed two cards in his palm. "Here, one of these cards is from your mother, and the other is my hidden savings. The PINs are your and your sister's birthdays. Together, these cards have a total of 5122.8 yuan. This money was originally meant for buying a house, but now, I'm giving it all to you!"
Wu was shocked. "I can't take this..."
Hai Kong slammed his hand on the table, his voice firm and determined. "I'm giving it to you, and you're taking it. I won't let you start on the back foot. If you want to become a professional Summoner, I'll do whatever it takes to pave the way for you. But understand this: I'm the useless one, not your mother. You can resent me, but if you dare show her any disrespect, I'll break your sycophantic legs!"
After saying this, Hai Kong continued drinking by himself.
He portrayed the image of a father, filled with self-blame and shame, to perfection.
Hai Kong's alcohol tolerance seemed to be low, and with such heavy drinking, he passed out quickly, startling Wu.
In the end, Wu had no choice but to pay for this drinking session and carefully carry Hai Kong home.
During the walk, Wu's emotions were complex.
This was his first real interaction with his father, and he felt he now understood him better.
He saw Hai Kong as a man who might seem unreliable and disheartened, but who deeply loved his family, even if he struggled to express his emotions.
Hai Kong's love for Wu, or perhaps his previous life, was unwavering and profound.
Under the moonlight, the fairy-like existence beside him seemed to think the same.
