Chapter 2: Supernatural Ability
Chapter 2: Supernatural Ability
"Hey, don't run!"
In the small yard enclosed by a simple wooden fence, Xiaoyan was chasing a butterfly with her tiny little legs.
Lu Qing, on the other hand, sat on a stone pedestal, holding a plant with small red flowers in his hand.
At this moment, in his vision, the plant with the red flowers was emitting a faint white light, and two lines of text were floating above it.
【Bone-Healing Herb: Average quality, medicinal.】
【Seems to be quite effective for bone injuries, may be useful when wounded.】
It took Lu Qing a while to figure out what the text in front of his eyes was all about.
Simply put, perhaps due to his reincarnation, he had gained a supernatural ability.
Currently, the main manifestation of this ability was that whenever he focused his gaze on an object for a certain period, the object would start glowing and display a simple textual description.
Moreover, the longer he maintained eye contact, the more information he would obtain. However, the information wasn't unlimited and seemed to follow some sort of standard.
Lu Qing guessed that this standard was probably related to the light that appeared on the objects.
Grey-glowing objects only ever displayed a single line of text, regardless of how long he looked at them.
White-glowing objects, on the other hand, displayed two or more lines of description.
The Bone-Healing Herb he was holding was the only plant he had found around the yard that emitted a white light.
"Is this some kind of game interface?" Lu Qing recalled the plot-driven games he had occasionally played in his past life.
After thinking for a moment, he beckoned, "Xiaoyan, come here for a second."
"Brother, what is it?"
The little one trotted over excitedly.
"Let me take a good look at you, little sister."
Lu Qing removed the withered grass stuck to Xiaoyan's head and focused his gaze on her face.
Soon enough, a faint white light appeared around the little girl, and a line of text floated above her.
【Lu Xiaoyan: A human child, female.】
What a lousy description!
Lu Qing's face twitched.
Nevertheless, he continued to observe.
After a while, another line of text appeared.
【Poor little human child, she seems a bit malnourished.】
Lu Qing paused, his eyes drifting to the dry, yellowish hair on Xiaoyan's head. He fell silent.
"Brother, are you done looking?"
Xiaoyan looked up at him innocently.
"Yeah, I'm done. Xiaoyan, you'll definitely grow up to be a great beauty."
Lu Qing ruffled the little one's hair affectionately.
Xiaoyan tilted her head, curious. "What's a beauty?"
"Hehe, you'll find out when you're older."
Hearing Xiaoyan's childlike words, Lu Qing's mood improved a little.
No matter what the future held, the most important thing right now was to take care of this little one who depended on him.
This was also the greatest wish of the previous owner of this body before his death.
To live well in this strange new world, Lu Qing would have to rely on this mysterious ability he had acquired.
With that in mind, Lu Qing picked up the Bone-Healing Herb and held it in front of Xiaoyan.
"Xiaoyan, do you know what this plant is and what it's used for?"
Xiaoyan examined the plant with its tiny blue flowers, furrowing her brows in thought before shaking her head.
"I don't know, but Old Zhang's big cow seems to love eating this grass."
Seeing that Xiaoyan didn't know, Lu Qing chuckled. He himself was confused.
Even the previous owner's memories didn't contain any information about the Bone-Healing Herb, yet he had expected a child to know.
However, Xiaoyan's next words surprised him.
"Brother, if you want to know what this grass is, you can ask Old Chen. He loves these flowers and grasses, and he often uses them to brew bitter tea for us to drink."
Chapter 2: The Supernatural Ability
"What about Old Chen?" Xiaoyan asked, her little face scrunching up as if she had just thought of something.
"Old Chen?" Lu Qing searched his memory and soon, a kind-faced, thin elder appeared in his mind.
"Oh, it's the village's respected old doctor," he realized.
A doctor? Lu Qing's interest was piqued.
According to the note, the Bone-Healing Herb was undoubtedly a medicinal herb. He wondered if Old Chen knew how to use it.
"Xiaoyan, did Old Chen come to see me when I was sick?"
"Yes, you were sleeping all the time, and no matter how much I called out to you, Brother, you didn't wake up. I was scared and cried a lot. Then Old Chen came, examined you, and said you had caught a cold. He made you drink a bitter concoction, and after a day, you woke up."
Xiaoyan paused, then exclaimed in awe, "Old Chen is amazing! You only drank a bowl of bitter water, and your illness was cured!"
Lu Qing fell silent. Only he knew that Old Chen's medicine hadn't saved the previous owner of this body.
However, he now recalled that when his consciousness was blurred, he vaguely felt someone forcing something down his throat. A slight warmth had protected his heart meridian, helping him through the difficult period of consciousness fusion.
Otherwise, with his frail body, he might not have woken up at all.
Indeed, this Old Chen was skilled and had saved his life.
As Lu Qing pondered this, he suddenly felt a pair of eyes on him. Looking down, he saw Xiaoyan staring at him.
"What's wrong, Xiaoyan?"
"Brother, I'm hungry."
Lu Qing realized he was hungry too. He hadn't eaten much earlier, and the half bun he had consumed was long digested.
However, he had checked, and there was no food left in the house. The rice jar was so empty that even mice wouldn't bother visiting. If it weren't for Old Zhang's support during his coma, Xiaoyan would have starved.
At this thought, Lu Qing remembered that he should thank Old Zhang and Old Chen for their help. Without them, he and Xiaoyan might not have survived.
But their household was extremely poor, with nothing to offer as a token of gratitude.
He decided to put off the thanks for now and focus on filling their hungry stomachs. But where could they get food?
Most of the family's farmland had been sold by the previous owner to pay for his parents' burial. The remaining plots, neglected, yielded little to no harvest.
So, the idea of foraging for food in the fields was out of the question.
It was a case of distant water cannot quench immediate thirst. Even if they started farming now, it would be too late. The crops wouldn't grow in time to save them from starvation.
After some thought, Lu Qing entered the room that had belonged to the previous owner's parents. He searched around and finally found a small box containing an iron needle and some hemp thread.
The iron needle was significantly thicker than the embroidery needles from his past life, appearing quite sturdy.
Lu Qing took out the needle and heated it over a fire before bending it into a hook shape with a wooden stick. He then took out several strands of hemp thread, carefully twisting them together to form a slightly thicker and more durable thread, which he tied securely to the iron hook.
Next, he went behind the house and cut a resilient bamboo stalk from the bamboo grove, tying one end of the hemp thread to it.
Finally, he attached a piece of dry wood to the thread just above the hook as a float.
With that, Lu Qing had crafted a simple fishing rod.
