Chapter 2 : Mushroom Omelette

The kitchen of the Laughing Cloud inn was big enough. I was overjoyed the first time Madam Anne showed me this kitchen.

It has a cob oven, and a brick stove.

The stove is really interesting. The brick table was almost as high as my chest, with the top covered by plain metal and there’s a hole for a big pot.

I really want to cook something but this place lacks cookware, kitchen utensils and the stove was too big for a tiny girl.

Besides, the fire to cook was directly from under the brick table, it will be too dangerous as the space is large enough to burn me inside.

“I wanna cook something…”

I let out a soft sigh.

“Vierra… It is a bright hot day today isn’t it?”

Sir Boru walks into the kitchen, with a bright smile on his face and talks in a loud voice and big laugh when he hands me a sack as big as my head.

“What is it?”

I opened the sack that he gave me. It looks so small but when I open it and look inside, it’s like there's no end to its capacity.

“That is a magic bean bag. Useful isn't it”

I look at him with a blank mind.

“Help me to take the vegetables and fruit to the table. I need to feed the horse. And be carefull, I forgot whatever I had put inside before”

Sir Boru laughed and walked to the stable.

“Magic bean bag… This world has magic and demons and human beasts… even though I cannot remember my old life, I am pretty sure that all of this was not normal.”

I take out the mushroom, carrot, onion and a few unknown fruits for me. As I rummaged inside, I saw dozens of eggs and felt joyous for things that I wanna make for the first time in this world.

“I wanna make mushroom omelette.”

“What is it? Do you know that black fat face plant?”

It was when madame Anne took out some of her grilled meat, and a few glasses of the sweet berry beer for the guest I realised it was already lunch time.

“Madam Anne, this is a mushroom.. Have you eaten this before?”

“No… we never saw that type of vegetable.”

After feeding the horse, Sir Boru got to the kitchen and saw us talking about the mushroom.

“I met a few children from a village near the river, they begged for me to help them and buy the fruits from them. I just buy everything they have. So we can eat those things?”

This is my chance, they didn’t let me use the kitchen since it will be too dangerous for me. But this is the chance for me to persuade them.

“Of course we can eat all this , we even can mix them with the eggs. I can cook it, I promise to be carefull. Everything is still fresh and I can make something delicious. Trust me, it will be nothing you have taste before”

“Sounds delicious to me, alright I start the fire for you.”

Sir Boru flick his finger and the fire under the brick stove lights up furiously.

“Be careful… Oh dear… Do you wanna spend whole night repairing the kitchen again?''

Madame Anne swishes her hand gently and the fire calms down.

“Haha… Sorry. I just can’t wait to see what this girl can make for us. I am starving.”

I just smile as Madame Anne continues nagging Sir Boru. I take the smallest knife they have, the one that is light and fits with my small hand.



I start cutting the mushroom and the onion into fine dicing and then mincing the onion.

Then crack the three eggs into a bowl and whisk it using the wooden fork.

Next I crashed the black pepper using the knife handle.

I was surprised that this world didn’t know black pepper could be used as a food ingredient.

Yesterday, I found a bowl full of black pepper in the kitchen and when I asked Madame Anne about it, I was shocked as it used to expel demons.

“Boru buys that thing from a girl that needs money for her mother's medicine. She said that she collected this in some forest and it could help to drive away evil.”

Madame Anne dont know what to do with it, so she just put it there in the kitchen.

Sir Boru really has a soft heart, he will just buy anything that people in need sell to him.

This inn barely got people to come, but he never hesitated to help people and Madame Anne was never angry about it.

“V, you look so good with that apron and you're really skilled at handling knives on that chopping board. But that apron is too big for you and the colour is so dull. I should look for some linen to make a new one.”

My hand stopped when I heard Madame Anne mumbling, but since I can’t really hear clearly any words she spoke I just smiled at her.

“Boru dear… did you still have that clear crystal from Carlos?”

“I kept it in the magic bean bag.”

He handed over the magic bean bag to Madame Anne, she blinked and a crystal pendant was already at her hand.

“V… come here. Wear this pendant.”

“What is it, Madame Anne?” I look at the pendant at my palm, so small yet too flashy to be carried around.

“I put a spell in it. A good one. It was a fireproof spell so I can be at ease every time you use that stove”

There is a sparkle reflecting in her eyes.

“Thank you.”

Madame Anne looked at me with a sparkle in her eyes, like how a proud mother would look at her daughter.

I wonder if my mother in my previous life looked at me like that too.

“Well, you should go prepare for the firewood Boru dear, and I should say that V will prepare lunch for us today.”

“I will do my best to satisfy your stomach.”

I check the pan temperature, I sprinkle a drop of water to the pan and it jumps around. I remove the pan from the heat and add a small amount of olive oil to lightly coat the surface.

“Where did the bowl go? It should be under the… on the table?”

I believe that table was empty before. I frown... try to remember but then I just conclude that maybe Madame Anne prepared for me before she leaves.

I need to loosen the wood to reduce the heat. I put the onion and when I hear the sizzling sound, it makes me feel like I am indeed alive.

When the aroma of brownish onion hit my sense of smell, I put the mushroom and the crushed black pepper to cook until beautifully browned.

Then spread the mushroom evenly to the surface of the pan and slowly pour the eggs until it covers the whole surface.

I check the end of the omelette, when it actually didn’t stick to the pan, I fold the thick omelette slightly into the middle to make it become square in the middle of the pan.

“That looks promising delicious food for our stomach lady.”

Sir Boru standing beside me after placing a wooden box at my feet.

“Thank you, I am sorry for the trouble.”

I stand on the wood box he made for me.

“Don’t worry about it young lady...Hahahaha.”

“You sure laugh too much, It will be ready soon. Sir Boru, should I make one for our guests as well?”

“They get the medium room, the payment includes the food as well. Urmm… you should if the ingredient is enough to make for the guest as well.”

I took a look at the table, and the eggs were plenty enough for dozens of people and with that much mushrooms no one would be hungry for a few days.

“It is more than enough.”

“Keep the hard work young lady.”

Sir Boru then continued chopping firewood at the courtyard.
