Chapter 2: Fairy Tail
Chapter 2: Fairy Tail
Mirajane finished tidying up the dishes and returned, bringing someone with her.
A peculiarly built person.
— His body was as round as a giant ball, but his limbs were slender, and his face was not fat at all, making him look quite out of place.
From his past experience watching Detective Conan, Rod suspected that this fat man was an imposter.
Mirajane introduced him, "This is Liddas. L-i-d-a-s."
After Rod repeated it, Liddas also greeted him.
Rod realized that the four people he had met since waking up were all quite distinctive, each in their own way, making them hard to forget.
With a puzzled expression, Liddas took out a paintbrush and a canvas and quickly started drawing on his round, fat belly.
First, he drew Rod, then the elderly man who had just left.
Then... the two figures actually jumped off Liddas's body and started moving!
"Is this like the Magic Brush or the Super Beast Pseudo Art?" Rod immediately thought of the stories he knew.
Liddas didn't understand Rod's words and continued drawing.
A forest appeared, and the two small figures entered it, beginning their performance.
'Rod' fell in the forest, and 'the elderly man's' arm stretched and grew larger, picking up 'Rod' and carrying him away.
Then the pink-haired woman appeared, giving 'Rod' a potion, followed by 'Rod' waking up and 'Mirajane' entering the room—familiar scenes from the story.
Rod was dumbfounded. He understood that Mr. Liddas was using this method to explain the situation to him.
He could indeed understand it, but... this method was just too fantastical.
If it wasn't some high-tech projection, then it must be... magic? Spells?
After the small figures finished their performance, they dissolved into puddles of paint, which, with a wave of Liddas's brush, flew back onto the canvas.
Then he took out a few more pieces of paper to show Rod.
The first was a map, marking the forest where Rod had fainted and his current location.
The second showed a wooden building, which was likely the house they were in now.
The third was a group photo, with dozens of people in it.
Rod stared at the third photo the longest, easily finding the elderly man, Mirajane, and Liddas.
Then... he saw a few familiar faces.
Natsu, Erza, Gray!
"Fairy Tail?"
Despite the disbelief, Rod finally realized where he was.
If this was the case, then the peculiar beast, Liddas's magic, and the unique appearances and colorful hair of the people he had met all made sense!
But why Fairy Tail?
If it had been One Piece or Naruto, Rod would have known more about the plots. Fairy Tail... he wasn't really familiar with it!
He could recognize those few people because a roommate had posted a few posters in their dorm.
Apart from those few and the ones not in the picture, like Wendy and Lucy, Rod knew almost nothing about Fairy Tail!
Mirajane noticed Rod's expression, "What's wrong? Do you recognize anyone in the picture?"
Rod looked at her, bewildered by her words.
"Sorry, I forgot again," Mirajane said regretfully, "If Levy were here, she might understand what you're saying."
Liddas asked, "Can't we call Warren to communicate with him?"
Mirajane replied, "Even with Warren's 'Telepathy' magic, he can only transmit sounds to the other person's mind. If they don't understand the language, it won't help."
"Then... should we just teach him our language directly?"
Mirajane nodded, "That's the only way right now, even if it's a bit inefficient. Hopefully, Levy will have a better solution."
"Let me know if you need any help," Liddas lifted his paintbrush, indicating that he could provide visual aids, even in 3D and animated.
"Sure, I'll trouble you, Liddas."
—
Rod's language lessons began shortly after.
He felt quite conflicted. Even if he wanted to return to school, he didn't know how.
And this place was dangerous. The next time he went out, he might not be so lucky and could end up being eaten by a wolf.
For the moment, Rod had no idea what to do, so he decided to follow their lead.
If these were the friends of the main characters, they probably didn't have any bad intentions.
Once he realized they were going to teach him to read and speak, Rod became very enthusiastic.
No matter what he planned to do next, he needed to solve the communication problem first.
Mirajane found a book that looked like a kindergarten primer and used it to teach Rod to read.
She used a magical pen that could write glowing letters in the air to assist her teaching.
Seeing Rod's curious expression, Mirajane went out to borrow another light pen and taught him how to use it.
She guessed that Rod might have never seen magic before.
Rod found it fascinating. Magic tools could be used even by those who didn't know magic.
Or perhaps, as long as he held this pen, he could be considered a mage?
...
Perhaps because there was nothing else to do, Rod's attention was quite focused.
Rod's literacy lessons progressed quickly. It didn't take long for him to master the basic syllables.
The next step was to learn specific words and characters.
However, Mira seemed quite busy. Every so often, someone would come to her with a piece of paper to register and get a stamp.
Unfortunately, Rod couldn't read the words on the papers, so he had no idea what they said.
Some people came and went in a hurry, while others would curiously ask about Rod's situation.
Mira patiently explained to everyone and introduced Rod to the names of these people.
Unfortunately, with so many people, and Rod only able to rely on pronunciation without understanding the meaning, he ended up not remembering any of the names.
The more people who came to Mira, the more uncomfortable Rod felt.
— He seemed to be delaying Mira's work and causing trouble for others.
Mira, however, didn't mind. After all, this was a task the guild master had entrusted to her.
Besides, most people were just there to register their tasks, and the distance between the medical room and the hall wasn't far. Once they understood the situation, they didn't care.
"You."
"You."
"I."
"I."
Mira taught Rod one word at a time, and he repeated after her like a child learning to speak.
Mira pointed to her eyes. "Eyes."
"Eyes."
"Look."
"Look."
Rod noticed that Mira's eyes were very beautiful. He had thought they were black, but on closer inspection, they were a light blue.
Her prominent double eyelids made her eyes look large and lively, and her not-too-long lashes were perfectly proportioned.
Her fine, slightly drooping eyebrows gave her a gentle look, and her slightly downturned eyes seemed to carry a hint of sadness.
But when she smiled, her eyes crinkled into a warm, inviting expression.
"Rod?"
"Ah, sorry." Rod realized he had been distracted.
"It's okay, but the lesson seems to have gone on for quite a while." Mira checked the time and gently stood up, supporting herself with her knee. "Wait a moment, I'll get some food."
Mira repeated her words with gestures.
Rod seemed to understand a few of the words and, combined with her gestures, he could guess what she meant.
He then noticed that it had already gotten dark outside. He had been in his language lesson for half the day without realizing it.
In the past, he had always complained about foreign language classes dragging on, but now the time had flown by.
Maybe it was because he had nothing else to do.
For his second meal in this world, Mira brought him a large bowl of steaming hot ramen.
The bowl was a large white porcelain one with unique red patterns on the rim.
The chopsticks were ordinary brown, and from the feel and weight, they were likely just regular wooden chopsticks.
The real highlight was the bowl's contents: noodles with a hint of oil, deep red slices of char siu, a sunny-side-up egg with a golden yolk, a few pieces of green vegetable, and finely chopped green onions.
The beautiful presentation and color coordination were enough to make anyone's mouth water.
Rod picked up the chopsticks and tried to grab a large bite of noodles, but then thought it would look too messy, so he let go of half of them.
He gently blew on the hot noodles, and before he even took a bite, the aroma filled his nose, making his mouth water.
When the noodles finally hit his tongue, the soft yet firm texture and rich flavor made him admire the chef's skills. He wished for a couple of cloves of garlic, but even without them, the tender, juicy, and slightly sweet char siu was a perfect accompaniment.
The egg was cooked to perfection. Biting into half the yolk was one flavor, and letting the remaining half soak in the broth was another.
A bite of the blanched yet still slightly crisp green vegetable was the perfect palate cleanser before the next round of deliciousness.
Before he knew it, Rod had abandoned all pretense of being polite and was slurping away.
After finishing the food, he didn't forget to sip the clear, rich broth—pure, smooth, and deeply flavored. Indeed, if the noodles were this good, the broth couldn't be far behind.
Rod let out a long breath, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. The lingering flavors in his mouth and the warm feeling in his stomach gave him a profound sense of happiness.
"Delicious, thank you!"
"I'm glad you liked it." Mira smiled and placed a glass of water on the bedside table before leaving with the empty ramen bowl.
When she returned, Mira was carrying a small bag, and a large man was with her.
The man wore a dark blue high-collar coat, and through the open collar, a tattoo on the left side of his neck was visible.
— It was the same symbol as on the ramen bowl, but in black.
Rod then remembered that it was the Fairy Tail emblem.
He hadn't noticed where Mira's emblem was located.
"This is Elfman, my brother," Mira introduced.
Elfman had a scar by his right eye, which gave him a slightly intimidating look even when he wasn't making any particular expression.
Rod noted the name "Elfman" but didn't understand the word "brother."
However, looking at Elfman's demeanor and his white hair, which matched Mira's, he guessed this was probably her brother.
