Chapter 2: Dr. Solance
Chapter 2: Dr. Solance
Knock, knock.
The sound of the door being tapped.
"Come in."
Hearing the voice, Jing He was a bit surprised but still responded.
With a "click," a middle-aged man pushed the door open. He was wearing a light brown archaeologist's outfit, a pair of round glasses, and looked somewhat weary.
"Dr. Solance."
Recognizing the visitor, Jing He quickly called out his name from memory.
Dr. Solance Koushou, a specialist in meteorites and rocks, was also a history professor at the Kanaz Pokemon Academy. His office was right next to Jing He's Pokemon psychology counseling room.
Like Jing He, Dr. Solance's history classes were rarely attended, and his focus on meteorites and rocks was even more niche than Pokemon psychology.
The difference was that Dr. Solance was a genuine doctor of his field.
"Jing He," Dr. Solance forced a smile, "Could you make me a cup of coffee?"
Watching Dr. Solance slowly walk to the table and pull out a chair, Jing He noticed the dark circles under his glasses and was a bit surprised. "Aren't you not a fan of coffee?"
Despite his words, Jing He got up and started the coffee machine.
"Don't remind me," Dr. Solance said weakly, shaking his head. "I haven't had a good night's sleep in the past two days."
Jing He quickly and skillfully brewed a cup of coffee and placed it in front of him. The rich aroma filled the air.
"It's obvious," Jing He pointed to his thick dark circles.
Dr. Solance gave a bitter smile, picked up the coffee, hesitated for a moment, and then took a large gulp.
The next moment, his face crumpled like a crumpled newspaper.
"Ugh, so bitter." He put down the coffee cup, furrowing his brow. "I can't understand how you people can enjoy this stuff."
His brow soon relaxed, and he seemed a bit more energetic.
"It's the bitterness that keeps you awake, right?"
"But it does have some effect."
Jing He was speechless.
"You'll get used to it if you drink more. Then you can ask the administration for a coffee machine."
Dr. Solance shook his head.
"Never mind, I'm not in the office most of the time. No need to waste public resources."
Jing He just shrugged and changed the subject.
"By the way, what new discovery has you so excited that you couldn't sleep for two days?"
Mentioning his discovery, Dr. Solance perked up immediately, pushing his glasses up.
"This time, we found a really interesting rock with significant research value. One of my students discovered it, but that's not why I haven't been sleeping."
After a brief description of the rock, Dr. Solance's energy waned again.
He ran his hand through his hair, which was a mess, and sighed.
"I don't know what's wrong. Ever since I got back, I've been having nightmares, one after another. I can't get a good night's sleep."
Nightmares?
Jing He was taken aback. He looked Dr. Solance over and said more seriously, "You don't think you've encountered something you shouldn't have, do you?"
"Something I shouldn't have?"
Dr. Solance's face turned pale, and he stammered, "Y-You mean... a ghost?"
As someone who "digs up the past," he had heard many tales of "unearthing ghosts," but he had never encountered one himself.
In the Pokemon world, "ghosts" were not exactly rare.
Jing He smiled gently. "Don't worry, it might just be anxiety or unease from your exploration, or a subconscious reaction to some shock. If it were really a ghost, it wouldn't just show up in your dreams, right?"
With that, he stood up and walked to a corner of the consultation room, where a remarkably comfortable single sofa was placed. It was where he usually took his afternoon naps. He patted the back of the chair, "Would you like to get some rest?"
Dr. Solance looked hesitant, but he soon slapped his cheeks and gulped down the remaining coffee in his cup. "Later, I just managed to regain a bit of energy. I need to finish the lesson plans as soon as possible; the semester starts soon."
Hearing this, Jing He naturally let him be and laid down on the sofa.
"Then you'd better hurry."
His lesson plans were already done, after all. There weren't many to begin with.
Dr. Solance slapped his cheeks once more, thanked Jing He, and strode out of the consultation room. His determined posture suggested another classic case of "one pen, one person, one night, one miracle."
The rain pattered against the window, leaving star-like water marks.
"Mmm."
Jing He opened his drowsy eyes, realizing he had inadvertently slept until evening, with the sky already darkening. The once bright afternoon had turned into a gray haze, the rain splashing and creating a thin mist that enveloped the city, adding an air of mystery.
"Jing He."
A low, raspy, and somewhat ethereal voice suddenly sounded.
Hearing the weak voice, Jing He instinctively jolted awake, sitting up abruptly. "Who's there?!"
"It's me, Solance."
Only then did he see the figure standing in the dim light.
Jing He exhaled, rubbing the goosebumps on his arms as he slowly stood up. "Dr. Solance, you haven't left yet?"
Solance sighed, "I just finished. I probably won't be able to sleep even if I go home. Seeing you still here, I thought you might help me."
"Now?" Jing He glanced out the window. "Not going home?"
"I'm used to it."
As Jing He stood up, Solance immediately lay down on the sofa. Being a bachelor, he often slept at the school to save time for his research.
"Alright."
Jing He rubbed his dry eyes and yawned, pulling a chair to sit beside the sofa. Dr. Solance, seemingly prepared, placed his hands on his chest and closed his eyes.
"Slowly, take a deep breath, hold it, and exhale. Now, you're very relaxed. You're on a grassy field, basking in the warm sunlight." Jing He's soothing and calm voice was like a gentle spring breeze, his magnetic tone making the listener's mind subconsciously relax.
Hypnosis.
With Solance's active cooperation, it was relatively easy for Jing He to provide a simple hypnotic aid for sleep.
In fact, from the original host's memories, this wasn't the first time he had helped Solance fall asleep.
Before long, even breathing came from Solance.
"Rest well."
Watching the now peaceful Solance, Jing He got up and carefully closed the door. Time to leave.
However, what he didn't know was that after he left, a faint red glow appeared on Solance's chest. Soon, black threads began to swirl and slowly coalesce into a mass. A pair of eyes emerged, looking at the sleeping Solance with displeasure, which quickly turned to curiosity.
"Kehe?"
How could that person also do it?
After a brief hesitation, it slipped through the door like a gas, following behind.
