Chapter 199: You Learned Animagus for This?
Chapter 199: You Learned Animagus for This?
What had been a constant headache for George and Fred was no problem for Ivan. Thinking of the various betting odds that Muggles used for sports, he suggested, "Actually, besides setting odds for the outcome of each match, you can set other odds, like who will catch the Golden Snitch, how many goals the winning team will score, or the point difference between the two teams."
Of course, Ivan wasn't sure about the specifics. He was only familiar with the rules of Quidditch.
"Right, why didn't we think of that?" George slapped his forehead, delighted, then continued, "We can also have Wood move you to the Chaser position to control the number of goals. That should be foolproof!"
Ivan rolled his eyes. Do you really think I'm a god? I can control the number of goals?
The other team's Keeper isn't blind; even if I aim perfectly, there's still a chance of being blocked.
However, it was clear that George and Fred had high hopes for him. After tidying up their secret base, they dragged Ivan off to find Wood.
Ivan shook his head and didn't say anything more. He thought Wood would never agree.
After all, the Gryffindor Team had been training with this tactic for over a week. It was impossible to change it at the last minute.
But to Ivan's surprise, Wood agreed after a brief moment of thought.
"That's not a bad idea. Those Slytherins will definitely assume you're a Beater and train accordingly. We'll catch them off guard", Wood said, noticing Ivan's surprise.
"Doesn't that mean our previous training was for nothing?" Harry said, clearly upset. He had taken a lot of hits during the practice sessions.
"Of course not. We can prepare two strategies to handle different situations", Wood explained, as he had been considering this all along.
Ivan's incredible Beating skills would be best used to score goals.
After all, the Quidditch Cup isn't awarded to the team that wins the most matches. It's awarded to the team with the highest cumulative score from all the matches!
This means that each goal is crucial, and catching the Golden Snitch only ends the game and awards 150 points.
Ivan didn't really mind whether he played as a Beater or a Chaser, but he still had some doubts.
"If I play as a Chaser, won't Fred have to play?" Ivan asked.
"What? Fred, can't you play?" Wood picked up on Ivan's implication and turned to Fred.
"That's right. I've been feeling unwell lately and might not be able to play", Fred immediately clutched his stomach, feigning weakness, and winked at Ivan to not expose him.
"I think we should just swap Ivan and Alyssa's positions", George chimed in, subtly blocking Fred from view.
Fred took the opportunity to turn away and discreetly did something. When he turned back, his nose was bleeding profusely.
"I think I should go see Madam Pomfrey. Maybe there's still hope for my health", Fred tried to stop the bleeding with his fingers, but the blood kept gushing out.
Ivan's lips twitched.
Wood also found the scene quite speechless. Although he had no idea why Fred was bleeding from the nose, he wasn't stupid and could tell something was amiss.
“So this is the effect of the Quick-Quit Candy? Quite amusing!” Angelina said with a grin.
“How do you know about the Quick-Quit Candy?” Fred was immediately stunned, his nose bleeding all over his hands.
“Didn’t you distribute the flyers?” Angelina pulled out a flyer from her pocket and waved it in front of him.
Fred turned to look at George, who nodded awkwardly, confirming that he had distributed the flyers a few days ago.
Fred swallowed hard, noticing Wood's darkening expression, and felt that he might be in trouble.
Just as Wood was about to explode, Ivan spoke up to soothe him. “Captain Wood, Fred has had other things to do these past few days. Even if you keep him, he won’t have the focus to train.”
“Captain, Alyssa and I don’t want to be replaced either. Let Fred sit out,” Angelina chimed in.
The other team members also added a few words of persuasion.
George and Fred were quite popular in the Gryffindor Team.
Wood, on the other hand, was getting increasingly annoyed. In the end, he had to compromise, making Fred a substitute who would only play when needed.
“As for the rest of you, get over here and start training. Do you realize the first match is only a few weeks away?” Wood shouted at the team.
Time flew by in a hurry, and before they knew it, it was mid-October.
Apart from the necessary classes and Quidditch training, Ivan spent the rest of his time in the library.
However, after poring over a vast amount of material and even flipping through the "Selection of Ancient Texts", Ivan still couldn’t figure out the meaning of the string of characters.
“So, what is this thing?” During the afternoon Transfiguration class, Ivan tried drawing a simple character in his notebook, muttering to himself in frustration.
Harry, sitting next to him, looked over curiously. His gaze swept over the character Ivan had written, and he suddenly paused.
In his vision, the character seemed to come to life.
“Class dismissed!”
Professor Mcgonagall’s voice from the platform interrupted Harry’s thoughts. Ivan then erased the character he had just written, gathered his books, and prepared to leave.
“Hals, stay behind!” Professor Mcgonagall called out again.
Ivan was a bit surprised but thought that Professor Mcgonagall might be inquiring about his progress with the Animagus transformation, so he stopped.
After the other students had left the classroom, Ivan quickly stepped forward.
Professor Mcgonagall looked quite serious. Before Ivan could speak, she said, “Hals, I heard a few days ago that a peculiar owl caused quite a commotion in the Hufflepuff Girls' Dormitory, even chatting happily with a Ravenclaw girl.”
Ivan felt a surge of guilt. He hadn’t expected that his exploration in Animagus form would be reported to Professor Mcgonagall.
But it was unavoidable. The Hufflepuff common room was incredibly difficult to enter.
In desperation, Ivan had used some special means. In his Animagus form, he had relied on cuteness to convince a first-year young witch to carry him into the Hufflepuff common room.
Everything had been going smoothly until the Hufflepuff young witch had a sudden idea to keep him in a cage as a pet.
