Chapter 199: Intrusion at the Academy
Chapter 199: Intrusion at the Academy
As soon as this topic was mentioned, Asuka and Misawa eagerly displayed their anticipation. After all, this was Seto Kaiba, a man at the very pinnacle of this world. Everyone would be intrigued by any anecdotes about such a legendary figure, especially if it involved someone they knew personally.
"Do you want me to tell you the truth?" You Xuan asked solemnly.
The duo, sensing some juicy gossip, nodded eagerly.
"Alright, then, here it goes," You Xuan said, taking a deep breath and relishing the moment.
"To be honest..."
The two held their breath.
"...I'm not really that close with Seto Kaiba."
"..."
You Xuan sighed. As expected, looking at their expressions, he knew that no one would believe the truth.
He had barely exchanged a few words with the CEO, and they didn't even have each other's contact information. If he had to be honest, he was only vaguely familiar with Kei because of their mutual connection.
The two were skeptical.
"Really?"
"Yes, really," You Xuan confirmed.
"So, is it true that he gave you a substantial scholarship?"
"...Yes, it's true."
"What about the sponsorship for our lab?"
"...Also true."
"And I heard you got your hands on some rare cards through internal channels at KaibaCorp."
"...That's true as well."
The two: "..."
"Ahem, but I've heard that Seto Kaiba is actually a difficult person to get along with," Misawa said. "It's said that even during his time with the Duel King, Yugi Muto, their relationship wasn't all that great. In fact, everyone in KaibaCorp is supposedly afraid of him."
This was indeed something that many people had always been curious about. Seto Kaiba was not only famous for his dueling skills but also for his notoriously bad temper. To have received favor after favor from him, one would have to be an incredibly close friend.
However, You Xuan shook his head. "It's just a rumor."
"So, he's not really like that?"
"Well, not exactly," You Xuan thought for a moment. "If I had to say, it's probably just a facade he puts on."
"A facade?"
Misawa and Asuka looked at each other, perplexed.
"Seto Kaiba isn't really like what you imagine him to be," You Xuan smiled. "As you know, KaibaCorp used to be a weapons manufacturer, right?"
This was already common knowledge, and the two nodded.
Seto Kaiba and his younger brother were both adopted; they had been taken in by the previous arms tycoon, Gozaburo Kaiba, from an orphanage.
Initially, Gozaburo had agreed to adopt Seto with his own agenda. He intended to use Seto's body as a vessel for his son, Noah, whose consciousness had been digitized due to a car accident. Gozaburo wanted to download Noah's electronic consciousness into Seto's body and use it as a vessel to bring him back to life.
However, Seto proved to be exceptional, and by the age of sixteen, he had already secretly taken control of the entire company, driving the old man to his death and becoming the new CEO. Gozaburo's plans were thwarted, and he could only die with his regrets.
"Seto Kaiba took over a colossal enterprise at such a young age," You Xuan explained. "All the resources and foundations he had were acquired through his own efforts. To make a group of people who had been selling weapons for most of their lives obey his orders and to make a company that used to manufacture planes and cannons shift its focus to researching card games... don't you think he had to act like the person in those rumors to achieve all that?"
The two fell silent, contemplating his words, and then looked at each other again.
It did make sense.
Besides, the CEO was inherently tsundere, and he would never openly admit his true feelings.
A prime example was how he constantly called Jonouchi a "mutt," yet he had rated him as a two-star Duelist, the lowest rating possible, during the Duelist Ratings.
"Who knows?" You Xuan shrugged. "Once a mask is worn for too long, it becomes difficult to take it off."
A brief silence ensued.
"So, you know Seto Kaiba so well," Mizawa said, his voice trailing off as the implication hung in the air.
You still claim you're not close?
You Xuan: "..."
The piercing sound of alarm bells suddenly ripped through the tranquil night sky, slicing through the peaceful forest like a sharp blade, echoing through the valley in relentless succession.
"Is that the Academy's intrusion alarm?" Mizawa's face paled.
Asuka furrowed her brow in concern. "This alarm is only sounded in emergencies. What's happening?"
A mechanical female voice blared through the speakers: "Attention all students, attention all students. The Duel Academy has been infiltrated by unknown individuals. All students are to return to their respective dormitories immediately upon receiving this message.
The Teaching Affairs Section will handle the invasion incident."
"Invasion? At the Duel Academy?"
Asuka's expression turned anxious. "Who could it be? Why would anyone target the Duel Academy?"
"Who knows?" You Xuan shrugged again.
There were too many reasons why this island might have been targeted.
"Regardless, as a precaution," Mizawa stood up, "let's head back to our dormitories as instructed."
Principal's Office
Principal Ryuzaki stood by the window, his face creased with worry as he gazed outside. The sky had turned gloomy, with thick clouds devouring the horizon, leaving only a murky backdrop. Thunderclouds roiled in the sky like enraged beasts.
"A storm is coming," Principal Ryuzaki muttered.
The office door opened, and Professor Chronos rushed in, his face etched with urgency.
"What's going on, Principal? What's this about an invasion at the academy? Why are the students being sent back to their dormitories?" Chronos asked in quick succession.
"Calm down, Professor. We don't have all the details yet, but we know that unauthorized individuals have entered the academy, and their numbers and origins are unknown," Principal Ryuzaki explained. "However, the Teaching Affairs Section has already deployed personnel to conduct a search, and I'm confident they'll pinpoint the intruders soon."
Professor Chronos snapped to attention. "Then I request to be included in the operation, Principal. I, Chronos de Medici, will not allow anyone to lay a finger on our students!"
"I understand your concern, Professor Chronos. However, let's observe the situation for now, and I'll notify you if your assistance is required," Principal Ryuzaki replied.
"Very well, Principal," Chronos said, his voice lowered.
"By the way, Principal, do you think they're after those three cards?" Chronos asked.
Principal Ryuzaki paused for a moment. "I don't think so. It doesn't match 'their' usual methods." He shook his head. "But just in case, I've already dispatched personnel to the 'Seal Site' to assess the situation."
He paused again, his expression turning solemn. "Regardless of what happens, the seal on those three cards must not be compromised."
