Chapter 194: Void Nest Insects
Chapter 194: Void Nest Insects
New wild monsters appeared, three somewhat ugly purple insects, occupying the position of the large dragon pit.
Rod originally thought that the position should have been the Canyon Vanguard, but today he finally confirmed that it was a wild monster he didn't recognize.
He suspected that the game might have secretly updated while he was away.
However, from their color, he knew these creatures might have something to do with the 'void.'
Rod just hoped they wouldn't have any overly complicated backgrounds or mysterious settings like other wild monsters.
So far, all the wild monsters had been cooperative, causing no trouble, and logically, this one shouldn't be any different.
However, out of caution, Rod still decided to go to the outskirts for the first summoning.
In the forest outside of Magnoia, Makarov led Rod to a relatively spacious spot.
"You've been so careful all this time," Makarov observed, looking at the cage in Rod's hand, "What's this about?"
Rod replied, "I originally wanted to use a white mouse, but since we don't have one, I'll use a white rabbit instead. It'll be a while, but it won't be dangerous."
"Alright, let's get started."
"Good... should we prepare a defensive spell first?" Rod still hoped to prepare in case the wild monsters went out of control.
Makarov raised his hand, his index finger glowing with a large golden light orb, and then two golden magic arrays appeared like shields in front of both of them: "Like this?"
"Make it a bit stronger, like the Spirit Orb or something."
Makarov was surprised, "How do you know about the Spirit Orb?"
"I saw it in the library, those old books with worn-out covers are always treasures," Rod explained, "but if these are books involving ultra-magic, why would they be just randomly placed in the library?"
"Knowledge is meant to be shared, otherwise, the efforts of our predecessors would be in vain."
Makarov laughed, "As long as it's possible, all the magic in the library can be freely studied. So... have you learned the Spirit Orb yet?"
"Not yet, it's too complicated, just a few pages and I get a headache," Rod was a bit unhappy, feeling that the thing looked more difficult than it seemed.
The strongest defensive ultra-magic, seeing it is hard to learn."
"True, half a year ago your magic foundation was zero, so learning the Spirit Orb would be impossible." Makarov felt that not learning such magic was normal.
Unless using ancient texts to 'infuse' Rod again, even with diligence, reaching the necessary knowledge level would take one or two years.
Rod helplessly, "So it's still you, a simple Spirit Orb will ensure our safety."
Makarov couldn't help but grin, "You know it's ultra-magic, even for me it's not easy to use!"
But he couldn't resist Rod's persuasion, and Makarov gave him a demonstration: "Maximum Defensive Magic Array · Three Pillars!"
The golden magic array spread out from his feet, three tall stone pillars rising up, standing at the edge of the magic array.
"Wow! That's impressive!" Rod was finally satisfied, walking to the edge of the magic array, holding the pendant, and reciting the initial incantation used for summoning beasts.
Three purple monsters appeared outside the defensive magic array, each one towering a person, with a single horn on their heads, full of fangs, and half-opened eyes, with purple eggs on their backs.
Upon closer inspection, the eggs seemed to have a small shadow inside.
Rod came to a fair assessment, these insects were a bit ugly, and they looked a bit scary.
Among the previous wild monsters, the ugliest was the swamp frog, but these ones clearly followed a different path.
Makarov finally understood Rod's mood.
"Step back, stop, shake your head, open your mouth, close your mouth..."
Rod tested some simple commands, and there was no difference from previous summonings.
Then, he opened the cage and released a white rabbit: "Catch it, but don't bite it to death."
The white rabbit, having never seen such terrifying monsters, immediately ran away upon hitting the ground.
The three insects tried to chase it for a few steps, but the purple-red eggs on their backs suddenly burst open.
Twelve basketball-sized blue larvae jumped out of the eggs, standing as tall as a person's knees when they rose up.
They chased the rabbit in a group, swarming it, with some biting its ears and others its legs, while those that couldn't get in just circled around in confusion.
When he looked at the three mother insects again, the broken eggs on their backs slowly recovered, taking about ten seconds to return to their original state.
The mother insects hissed softly, and the larvae eagerly dragged the rabbit back, jostling and pushing to make way for their siblings who were still feeding.
It seemed that the mother insects, like other wild monsters, had a certain degree of autonomous action and could be commanded normally, but the larvae had limited intelligence.
Rod squatted at the edge of the magic array and watched for a while, ensuring that the poor rabbit showed no signs of infection or mutation. Only then did he approach the mother insects closely.
"They are called Void Nest Insects. Their attack capabilities are average, their defense is mediocre, and their speed is also ordinary. Magic consumption... feels about the same as Red and Blue."
Rod introduced the basic information about the Void Nest Insects he had just obtained to the Guild Master.
Makarov asked, "Just ordinary summoned creatures? What about the small ones?"
"The small ones are called Void Worms. The Void Nest Insects seem to be able to produce these Void Worms endlessly, with each Void Nest Insect producing four Void Worms every 12 seconds."
"Four every 12 seconds, so three would produce 12 every 12 seconds, 60 a minute, and if they produce continuously for 24 hours, that would be... over 80,000 a day?"
Makarov was startled by this number. Over 80,000 worms could cover the entire forest, wouldn't they?
This, in an ideal state, means one person is an entire army?
Although these worms individually don't seem very strong, their sheer numbers are daunting. Even 80,000 rabbits would take some effort to deal with, let alone worms that can bite.
"They seem to have a special ability..." Rod pointed at the stone pillars Makarov had created, "Take care of them."
The eggs on the backs of the Void Nest Insects burst open again, producing another 12 Void Worms. The 24 worms hopped and pounced at the stone pillars, gnawing at any spot they found.
For a moment, the only sound was the gnawing.
The three Void Nest Insects didn't rush to attack directly but stood two meters away, spitting fist-sized dark purple magic orbs.
Each magic orb that hit the stone pillars corroded a hole.
After 12 seconds, the eggs on the backs of the nest insects burst open again, and another 12 worms climbed onto the stone pillars, gnawing away with a crunching sound.
Makarov watched as his Three Pillar Defense magic was gnawed to pieces, finally collapsing and shattering... This wasn't right!
Defense magic could be broken, but not like this!
Makarov asked, "The special ability you mentioned is... they are good at breaking defense magic, even gnawing through magic arrays?"
Rod sheepishly said, "They are good at dismantling structures, especially special buildings."
"..." Makarov pondered for a moment and then said firmly, "Absolutely do not summon them inside the guild!"
Lucy really is impressive; she can learn ultra-magic like the Spirit Orb at first glance.
This is probably the difference between someone who has received proper magical education and is a top student, and Rod, who is a self-taught mage.
