Chapter 194: National Conscription
Chapter 194: National Conscription
As Chen Chuan stepped out, he heard a burst of cheers from outside. Apparently, the Wu Yi students had received news of his safety, not the one mentioned by the Judgment Hall, but the outcome was the same.
When he reached the platform outside the Judgment Hall, the students spotted him.
"He's out! He's out!"
The students below were excited, their eyes fixed on him as they gathered around.
Chen Chuan looked at the energetic Wu Yi students below. They had no complicated thoughts; they were here purely driven by their passion. Despite their youth, they held a very simple sense of right and wrong.
He understood Shen Zheng's approach. The latter had set an example for himself, and even if he failed, he would show later generations a possibility, no matter how slim. As long as someone stood up and kept going, even if they succeeded just once, a path would be forged.
Although Chen Chuan didn't follow in Shen Zheng's footsteps, he had taken a different route.
This path wasn't just his own; it was made possible with the help of many others and by riding the tide of the times. But this didn't prevent him from becoming a part of that tide, rising as the highest and most powerful wave, determined to break through the dam blocking his path.
As he looked at his classmates, he bowed to them in respect.
The students below were startled but soon became excited, returning his gesture with their own respectful bows.
After lowering his hand, Chen Chuan walked down from above. The students cleared a path for him. Just before getting into the car, he turned back and smiled, saying, "Classmates, see you in the next semester." As he spoke, he stepped into the car.
"Senior, see you in the next semester!"
"Junior Chen, see you in the next semester!"
The square echoed with their responses. They were not only bidding farewell to Chen Chuan but also encouraging each other for the upcoming semester.
From a distance, Lu Fang felt his eyes well up with emotion. If only his senior were here, how wonderful it would be. He turned and said to the members of the Determined Heart Society, "From now on, I entrust the society to you."
"Senior, rest assured. We will take good care of the society you founded," they replied.
Lu Fang smiled. "I have no doubts."
In the distance, Tai Dongwei muttered, "Do you think we still need to take the Infinite Defense Certificate exam?"
Deng Fu gave him a strange look. "Of course we do. Why wouldn't we? We've already registered, so why not take the exam? No one is forcing us to lose, and it would be foolish not to get the certificate."
Tai Dongwei looked up. "The exam is tomorrow. We can make it if we leave by car today!"
"That's right," said Deng Fu. "So let's not waste time. Let's go." He had only taken a few steps when a voice called out, "Brother Deng."
Deng Fu turned and saw Geng Zhen. "What is it?"
"Brother Deng, you're right," said Geng Zhen seriously. "As long as we stay alive and live longer, we might witness anything."
Deng Fu was taken aback. "It seems my words have some truth to them." He sighed, as if remembering something. "What if..."
Tai Dongwei and Geng Zhen both reacted, stepping forward to stop him. "Brother Deng, please don't say anything more. Can we wait until after the exam?"
Deng Fu looked at them, seeing the concern in their eyes. He sighed, "Alright, alright. I wasn't going to say anything. I just wanted to say..."
"Don't!"
After riding in Gao Ming's car, Chen Chuan soon arrived at his aunt's home. As he entered the courtyard, Yu Wan grabbed him and carefully examined him from head to toe, finally releasing a sigh of relief upon seeing he was unharmed.
"Auntie, don't worry," Chen Chuan said.
Yu Wan pretended to be calm. "What's there to worry about? Don't underestimate me. I've been handling cases in the middle of the night for years, sometimes not returning for days. I'm used to it."
Chen Chuan smiled. "Auntie, I'll take care of myself."
"Cousin is back! Cousin is back!" The two cousins clapped together.
Chen Chuan smiled slightly and took out the High-Energy Nutrient Syringe he had purchased earlier.
The phone in the living room rang, and his aunt's voice came through, "Chuan'er, your phone is ringing."
Chen Chuan answered, "Hello?"
"Chen Chuan, student," a familiar yet stern voice said. "Please hold on to your Infinite Defense Certificate and come to the alley."
Chen Chuan's heart stirred. He hung up and bid farewell to his aunt before walking out of the courtyard and into the alley. There, he saw the luxurious car he had encountered before, surrounded by figures in black trench coats. Inside, he recognized some of the people he had met on the edge of the wasteland.
One of the men extended his hand and opened the car door for him, gesturing, "Chen Chuan, please get in the car."
Chen Chuan thanked him and stepped inside. As he entered, he saw Cao ZHUAN, the Special Agent, sitting in the back seat. Chen Chuan nodded in greeting, "Special Agent Cao."
Cao ZHUAN nodded back and waited for him to sit down. After the car door closed, he spoke solemnly, "Student Chen Chuan, I told you when you received the Infinite Defense Certificate that you were essentially becoming a semi-enforcer. With power comes responsibility. Now, as the Special Agent of the Datong Administration Bureau, I am issuing a national summons to you. What is your response?"
Chen Chuan looked up and replied solemnly, "I, as a student, obey the national summons."
Cao ZHUAN showed no expression, but his eyes revealed satisfaction. He said, "Then, from this moment on, you are on standby, awaiting my orders at all times."
Chen Chuan nodded. He asked, "May I ask, Special Agent, what is the objective of the mission?"
Cao ZHUAN extended his hand, and immediately, someone handed him a document. It bore the official seal of the Datong Administration Bureau and the words 'National Summons'. As Chen Chuan took it, Cao ZHUAN spoke in a deep voice, "This mission, as you may have guessed, is to eradicate the Mo Lan Gaoling Corporation.
Their headquarters are in Central City, but don't concern yourself with that. Someone will handle it, and it's almost an empty shell anyway. Two years ago, the Mo Lan Corporation secretly transferred their primary implant research equipment and key technical documents to their branch."
Chen Chuan said, "Is there anything in Yangzhi that can compare to Central City?"
"Yes."
Cao ZHUAN spoke gravely, "The water in Yangzhi has unique properties that are highly beneficial to the Mo Lan Corporation's implant research. They've been trying to control Yangzhi's water sources, and if necessary... they can introduce a special toxin through the water supply, holding hostage the lives of millions in Yangzhi City and the surrounding towns and counties!"
Chen Chuan's eyes narrowed.
Cao ZHUAN spoke sternly, "This is the bottom line; we cannot allow them to cross this line. But through bribery, infiltration, and destructive means, they've forcefully obtained control of several water channels over the past two years, leaving us no choice but to take action."
Chen Chuan nodded. At that moment, he suddenly remembered that his classmate Han Shu's family was in the Water Affairs Bureau. Later, Han Shu joined the Mo Lan Corporation as a trainee. It seemed that the Mo Lan Corporation had been planning this all along.
If they indeed controlled the water sources, the Mo Lan Corporation would have a grip on the Dajun Republic's vital interests. The government couldn't possibly allow millions of people to be controlled and held hostage by the Mo Lan Corporation.
However, Chen Chuan also felt that Cao ZHUAN hadn't told him the whole truth. It was evident that other companies were involved, not just the Cang Hong Sky Canal. If it were only a government concern, these companies wouldn't need to get involved. There must be other reasons.
But since the other party didn't bring it up, Chen Chuan knew better than to ask further. After all, some matters might involve state-level secrets.
Cao ZHUAN gestured, and his assistant handed Chen Chuan a briefcase, "Inside is information about the Mo Lan Corporation's armed forces. Take it back and study it carefully."
Chen Chuan reached out and took the briefcase. Suddenly, Cao ZHUAN asked, "If your Recommendation Card is still valid, will you use it?"
Chen Chuan answered confidently, "No."
Cao ZHUAN looked at him, "Oh? Why? Don't you want to join those companies? You could even become a recommended student; with that card, your starting point would be much higher than others."
Chen Chuan replied frankly, "Whether it's joining a company as management or becoming a recommended student, it's not determined by a card. It's determined by the resources and background of the recommended student. The card comes after these factors, not the other way around. Since I have nothing to begin with, my choice is clear."
Cao ZHUAN stared at him for a moment, then nodded and said, "Student Chen Chuan, you may leave. Await my instructions."
The car door beside him opened, and Chen Chuan nodded, stepping out of the car. He carried the briefcase and walked down the alley across the street.
Through the window, Cao ZHUAN watched Chen Chuan's straight back disappear into the distance. His assistant asked, "Special Agent, can we trust his words?"
Cao ZHUAN replied, "Does it matter? He has already responded to the national summons and is now an enforcer of the state. As long as he obeys and serves the nation, that's enough. We don't need to worry about his thoughts; we can judge him by his actions.
Besides, his words were sincere. He's much better than those who only talk about serving the nation but think only of themselves when it matters. Let's go; we have much to do today."
"Yes, sir."
As the people outside got into their vehicles, the cars slowly drove out of the street, joining the vehicles parked at the street corner, and headed towards the Government Hall.
