Chapter 194: Harry's Obsession with the Mirror
Chapter 194: Harry's Obsession with the Mirror
For the next period, a professor would patrol the castle every night after curfew.
Filch was driven mad by the omnipresent chicken feathers. Despite cleaning five times, he still spotted them after a while.
Sometimes they were at the corner of the corridor, sometimes next to the door frame... it was endless.
Because of this, Filch became even more irritable. He glared at everyone, and even the slightest loud voice would catch his attention, leading to a scolding.
Although the scolded students were frustrated, they had no choice but to avoid Filch, as his behavior was tacitly approved by a Potions professor, and any dissatisfaction would result in point deductions.
Kyle had also become more well-behaved recently. He spent his days in the library, writing assignments and reading books, returning to the dormitories at the designated time, and even temporarily putting aside his night walks.
Fred and George informed him that Filch mostly roamed the second floor at night, and the patrolling professors often checked the library.
Copying books at this time was too risky, so Kyle decided to wait until the situation calmed down.
However, someone clearly had other plans, like Harry Potter.
Ever since he figured out who the people in the mirror were, his mind was filled with only one thought—to return to the mirror, do nothing, and sit there for an entire night.
Ron had tried to dissuade him, but to no avail... Harry wasn't listening to anything at the moment.
Until the third night, when he ran into Dumbledore in his room.
"I... I didn't see you, sir!" Harry stood there with icy hands and feet, saying nervously.
It was then that he remembered that the professors had been strictly checking for night walkers recently. What if Dumbledore thought he was responsible for the previous night's incident...
The thought of Gryffindor losing two hundred points made Harry feel as if his organs were about to freeze.
"It's strange that you've become nearsighted after becoming invisible," Dumbledore said with a smile.
Harry saw the smile on his face and breathed a sigh of relief. Thankfully, Dumbledore didn't seem to be in the mood to deduct points.
He was like the Muggle grandpa from Hogsmeade who often went for morning walks, patient and gentle.
From him, Harry truly understood the purpose of the Erised Mirror.
"This mirror shows us our deepest and most intense desires."
Dumbledore spoke softly, "People waste their lives in front of it, becoming obsessed with what they see and even driven to madness.
Because they don't know if what they see in the mirror is real or possible."
Harry bowed his head and remained silent for a moment before stammering, "Sir... Professor Dumbledore, have you ever looked into this mirror?"
"Yes, more than once," Dumbledore smiled. "I must say, no one can resist its magic, not even me... oh, except for one person."
"Who is that person!" Harry asked curiously.
"A second-year student."
Dumbledore looked at Harry's surprised expression and blinked, "What, don't you believe me?"
Harry nodded.
If Dumbledore had mentioned a famous wizard or a professor, he could have accepted it.
But a second-year student accomplished something even Dumbledore couldn't... How was that possible?
"Just as you think, he is indeed better than me in this regard.
Professor Dumbledore paused in thought before replying, "He had two opportunities to view the Erised Mirror, but each time, he left without hesitation."
"Professor Dumbledore, could he have mistaken it for an ordinary mirror?"
"I initially thought so too, but it turns out that's not the case." Professor Dumbledore shook his head, "He knows about the Erised Mirror and is well aware of its purpose."
"Who is he?" Harry asked again, "Do I know him?"
But this time, Professor Dumbledore chose not to answer.
"That's enough for today, Harry."
He stood up and said, "The mirror will be moved to a new location tomorrow. I ask that you no longer seek it out. It's pointless to indulge in fantastical dreams and forget about real life. Remember that."
"Why not put on that incredible Invisibility Cloak and go back to sleep?"
Harry left the room with questions still lingering in his mind. Back in his dormitory bed, he continued to wonder about the identity of the second-year student Professor Dumbledore had mentioned.
However, he didn't know many second-year students, aside from a few in Gryffindor and Kyle.

"Could it be him?" Harry wondered, feeling uncertain.
And so it continued until the next day.
During lunch that day, Conna suddenly nudged Kyle, who was sitting across from her, and whispered, "Have you been up to something lately, like practicing Quidditch at the stadium or something?"
"Of course not," Kyle replied, confused. "I've been in the library these past few days and nowhere else. Besides, the rest of the team isn't here, so it's not like I can practice alone. Why are you asking this suddenly?"
"It's nothing," Conna said, discreetly pointing towards Gryffindor's direction. "It's just that Harry Potter has been staring at you. I thought maybe you had come up with some new Quidditch tactic that he noticed."
"Huh?"
Kyle instinctively turned around and caught a glimpse of Harry hastily lowering his head.
"It's not just this time," Conna continued. "I've noticed him sneaking glances at you several."
Kyle's heart skipped a beat.
Could it be that Harry knew he was in the fourth-floor room that day? No, that's unlikely. I had the Invisibility Charm on the whole time, so Harry couldn't have seen me.
And the chances of him guessing are slim... he's not that smart.
"It's probably because of Quidditch," Kyle said calmly. "After all, it's our match against Gryffindor right after Christmas. He's probably thinking up some tactics and using me as a stand-in."
"Tactics?" Conna frowned, puzzled. "But isn't he a Seeker? Does he need tactics?"
"It's probably some crazy idea of Wood's, who knows. Kyle said, "Forget about him... aren't you supposed to meet with Professor Snape for extra lessons today? How's your preparation coming along?"
"I'm all set," Conna replied, her voice lowered. "I have my books, quill, parchment, and ink."
At the mention of extra lessons, Conna became anxious, no longer paying attention to Harry Potter. She whispered, "Kyle, do you think I should bring my cauldron as well?"
"That's not necessary," Kyle replied, although he had never attended extra lessons himself. Just thinking about it, he knew that the one thing Professor Snape wouldn't lack was cauldrons.
