Chapter 193: I Am a Remnant of the Old Era
Chapter 193: I Am a Remnant of the Old Era
Ace would not be killed—not yet. To do so would risk angering Garp, drawing Luffy’s wrath, and earning Whitebeard’s punishment. Worse still, letting Ace escape only to be recaptured later would be a disgrace. Dying on the execution platform was the only acceptable end.
“Ace…”
Whitebeard’s voice cracked as he steadied himself, his eyes brimming with grief. He had known Ace’s fate was sealed, but the old pirate had hoped to fight harder, until his body betrayed him.
Garp stood below, his face dark as storm clouds. For a moment, he’d seen Ace glance his way—a look of gratitude that stirred something deep within him. The boy had always been polite, never a burden. Now, duty and blood stood at odds.
“Why… why become a pirate, Ace?!” Garp roared, his fist trembling.
“Advance! Destroy the Whitebeard Pirates!” Akainu bellowed, charging first.
Suddenly, a deafening scream erupted across the square. Luffy knelt, head thrown back in a mindless howl, his eyes vacant.
“Dad… Ace…”
A captain wiped tears, his voice breaking.
Whitebeard’s gaze lingered on Luffy before he turned. “Take Luffy away.”
He gripped Murakumogiri’s twin blades, slashing at Akainu.
*
The ground shattered under the force, the execution platform collapsing in a chain reaction of shockwaves. Sengoku emerged from the ruins, his navy cloak billowing as he glared at Whitebeard.
“Freaking terrifying,” Kuro muttered, floating above, as another wave of marines fell.
Akainu staggered backward, retaliating with a Lava Fist that carved a smoldering wound into Whitebeard’s chest.
“Don’t let them escape!” Akainu snarled. “Eradicate the Whitebeard Pirates! And—”
He edged closer to Luffy. “This dragon’s son is just as evil! Kill them all!” His lava-coated arm drew back.
A thunderous fist slammed into his back. Whitebeard’s strike shattered Akainu’s lava, sending shockwaves through his body and drawing blood.
“Killing him? You’ll have to get through me first!” Whitebeard growled.
“Bissta!” Whitebeard roared as he turned to his crew. “Go! I won’t leave with you!”
“We can escape together! Buy you time—retreat first!” Bissta cried, blade raised.
Whitebeard shook his head, his arm swelling with power. “I’m a remnant of the old era. The new age has no ship for me!”
“Mad Dog!” Akainu lunged, his lava claw slashing.
*
The blow tore half Whitebeard’s face away. Yet his fist crashed into Akainu’s body, hurling him into the cracked earth, splitting the ground in a massive fissure that severed Whitebeard from his crew.
“Dad’s cutting us off!” Marco shouted, unshackling the pirates. Seeing Whitebeard leaning on his nitoryu, Marco’s eyes welled. “Retreat! Honor Dad’s wish!”
They knew his body was failing. Staying would only chain him.
Lucius Kro appeared on the cliff’s edge, firing lasers at pirates. “Whitebeard’s terrifying—dropping Sakazuki like that!”
Kuzan joined on the other flank, but to Kuro, both seemed to be coasting through the battle.
“Look!” Marines gasped, spotting a colossal figure behind the HQ—a giant in prison garb, scratching his head.
“Wait—someone’s still on the platform!”
Sengoku narrowed his eyes. “Blackbeard?!”
Whitebeard’s voice rumbled. “Marshall D. Teach…”
“Evil laugh!” Blackbeard cackled. “Dad! What a joy to see you before your end!”
“Those men—sixth-level criminals! They’re supposed to be extinct!” Vice Admiral Togeko paled.
San Juan Wolf, the giant warship. Abaro Pizarro, the Despot King. Basque Shot, the Drunken King. Catarina Devon, the Moon Hunter. Legendary threats the World Government erased.
“Shiryu?!” Sengoku frowned as the Impel Down officer spat smoke.
“Magellan? Impel Down?” Shiryu shrugged. “Ask them later. I’m with Blackbeard now.”
