Chapter 193: Good Deeds without Leaving a Name
Chapter 193: Good Deeds without Leaving a Name
Leaning against the wall, Kyle listened as the footsteps outside gradually faded away.
"Whew..." A sharp intake of breath sounded from nearby.
Harry whisked away his Invisibility Cloak, appearing out of thin air in the room as if by magic.
However, he didn't notice that there was someone else in the room. After uncovering himself, he began to survey the room curiously.
He discovered a rather imposing mirror and, intrigued, walked over to catch a glimpse of his current appearance.
Soon, as Harry approached the mirror, he found himself transfixed, unable to move another step.
Not far away, Kyle, who had witnessed the whole scene, rubbed his forehead in exasperation.
That mirror was the one he had seen last year in the headmaster's office—the Mirror of Erised.
Kyle was well aware of the mirror's immense allure to Harry, but now was definitely not the time for such distractions.
Hadn't Snape just mentioned checking the dormitories? How could he have forgotten so quickly?
With a sigh, Kyle decided to give him a nudge.
As he deliberately made his exit, Kyle created a loud noise, casually tossing a Knut as he left.
A skilled Seeker, Kyle displayed his usual precision as the Knut curved through the air, landing squarely on Harry's forehead with a satisfying thud.
Hopefully, that would snap him out of his trance.
By the time Kyle reached the fourth floor, there was no sign of any professors. After leaving the room, he quickly located the suit of armor and made his way through the secret passage to the classroom in the dungeons.
At that moment, several individuals were standing in the corridor outside the kitchen, roused from their sleep by the commotion and curious about what had transpired. Yet, they dared not venture beyond the corridor.
Using the Disillusionment Charm to his advantage, Kyle stealthily blended into the group. When Professor Sprout arrived, he seamlessly returned to the common room with the rest of the crowd.
"Kyle, when did you go out as well?"
In the common room, Connor asked drowsily, hugging a pillow, "What happened out there anyway?"
"I don't know," Kyle shook his head calmly. "I went out after being woken up by the noise, but it was pitch-black outside, and I didn't see anyone around."
Connor nodded vaguely, his eyes half-closed, seemingly only half-listening.
The next day, the entire Hogwarts buzzed with discussions about the previous night's events. During breakfast, almost half the students yawned intermittently.
"That was a close call," Ron prodded a piece of fried egg on his plate, his eyes heavy with sleep. "Professor McGonagall almost found out you weren't in your dormitory last night. How did you manage to get away with it..."
"I've told you countless times, Ron, it wasn't me!" Harry replied irritably. "I just went to the library, that's all!"
"But..."
"It was someone else!" Harry thought for a moment. "There must have been another person there. Remember the mirror I told you about?
I was so engrossed in looking at it that someone had to snap me out of it.
If not for them, I would've surely been caught by Professor McGonagall."
"In that case, they're not a bad person," Ron remarked in a low voice. "They could've ignored you and left you to face the consequences—deductions, detention, or whatever else. But instead, they made sure you were safe."
"Yeah, that's right, but who could it have been..."
Harry lifted his head, scanning the Great Hall. "Ron, do you think it's possible that someone else has an Invisibility Cloak like mine?"
He hadn't sensed anyone else's presence last night, just as Filch hadn't been able to see him.
He recalled how, before Christmas, Malfoy had spent a hundred galleons on a toy. If he wanted an Invisibility Cloak, it probably wouldn't have been difficult for him to get one.
"You're right," Harry agreed, shrugging. "But Malfoy's gone home for the holidays, so he wasn't at school yesterday."
"What a pity..." Ron sighed.
After a moment of silence, Harry's thoughts turned once again to the mirror, and the image he had seen within it involuntarily resurfaced in his mind.
Who were those two people... could they have been his parents?
The time had been too short for him to be sure, but he decided he would go back and look again tonight.
Unbeknownst to the pair, their conversation had been overheard by Fred and George, who were sitting nearby.
"Did you hear that, George? An Invisibility Cloak..." Fred raised an eyebrow.
"Of course," George whispered, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "There aren't many people in Hogwarts who own Invisibility Cloaks, and our friend just happens to be one of them."
"It's a good thing we didn't go home for Christmas, or we would have missed out on all the fun."
"It's all thanks to Kyle, making everyone wake up five hours earlier... What a brilliant idea!"
Fred craned his neck to look in the direction of the Hufflepuff table, a puzzled expression on his face. "I wonder where Kyle is, though. I was waiting to ask him about what happened."
"He's probably still asleep," George mused. "The Hufflepuff common room is right next to the kitchen, so they can just pop down for breakfast whenever they want."
"How convenient..." Fred sighed. "I wish we could move the Gryffindor common room over there, too."
"Yeah... Then we wouldn't have to run downstairs every night."
At the head table, the professors were also discussing the incident. They had conducted a surprise inspection of every house's dormitories the previous night, but no students had been absent.
"He must have snuck back before we arrived!"
Snape glanced at Harry and drawled, "I suggest we ask Madam Pomfrey if any young witches or wizards sneaked out of their beds in the middle of the night."
Professor McGonagall pursed her lips, giving Snape a thoughtful look.
"We never ask Madam Pomfrey about students, Severus," Dumbledore shook his head. "And it wouldn't be fair to the other three houses.
However, you could try asking the portraits in the corridors."
"I will..." Snape's expression soured, and he shot another glance at the Gryffindor table before rising from his seat and leaving the head table.
"In fact, I've already inquired," Dumbledore said, winking at Professor McGonagall as soon as Snape was out of earshot. "But they didn't see anyone. That young wizard is quite clever..."
Professor McGonagall furrowed her brow, appearing less than pleased with the "clever" assessment.
Dumbledore, however, seemed not to notice, as he continued to slice into a piece of smoked meat and said, "Hogwarts hasn't seen such excitement in a long while.
I daresay Hagrid must be delighted. He's been worrying about the increase of flesh-eating slugs in his vegetable patch, and now the problem is solved."
