Chapter 192: R.A.B
Chapter 192: R.A.B
With a wave of Ved's wand, he enlarged the goblet and scooped out a portion that almost filled half a basin.
However, when the cup left the surface of the potion, the liquid inside remained at its original height as if it had never diminished.
Ved controlled the "Toad Man," which was a piglet under a transformation spell, and had it drink from the cup.
After practicing on various insects, Ved had become quite skilled with the Confundus Charm. He easily convinced the piglet that the potion was its favorite food, and it gulped down the liquid with a few hearty swallows.
As the piglet swallowed, the surface of the potion in the stone basin finally began to lower. But it only decreased slightly, which didn't match the amount the piglet had consumed.
"Wow—"
Even Dumbledore couldn't help but exclaim in surprise, never expecting that such a clever method would actually work.
Ved, however, was still unsatisfied. "The amount of potion reduced is less than I expected."
"I believe it's because the magical power within its body is too weak," Dumbledore said. "Perhaps only magic can digest it."
"But... there's magic within the magical puppets too!" Ved said in confusion.
"The magic that the puppets possess is not innate; it is cast upon them by others," Dumbledore explained. "Perhaps the potion did reduce just now, but the amount was so minuscule that it couldn't even offset the speed at which the potion in the basin recovers."
Ved continued to force-feed the piglet the second cup of potion. By the third cup, the Confundus Charm was less effective, and the piglet struggled for a few seconds before reluctantly drinking it down.
The piglet began to roll on the ground in pain, and the Transfiguration spell cast by Professor Dumbledore started to wear off. A few seconds later, some of the piglet's limbs returned to their original form, making its appearance even more terrifying.
Suddenly, it became calm again—Dumbledore had intervened. He made the piglet drink the fourth, fifth, and sixth cups of potion before stopping.
The piglet, now completely back to its original form, lay on the ground, breathing weakly as if its end was near.
Dumbledore lowered his wand and said, "It still has a chance to be cured. If we continue, there will be no way back."
"Professor, there's also pork and lamb on the table," Ved reminded him.
"Yes," Dumbledore said. "But, killing other animals for survival is different from killing those who have helped us, my child."
"Alright, you've convinced me," Ved shrugged. "Luckily, I have quite a few animals in my care."
He turned and re-entered the wardrobe space.
Two young Kneazles were playing under a tree, a female magical puppet was tending to the Whomping Willow, and a Nimbus 2000 was chasing a Snitch that had pulled on its branches.
The scene was lively all around.
Ved walked through the midst of it, placing a young Diricawl that had landed on his shoulder back into its tree.
These magical creatures were gifts from friends, and they were all quite affectionate towards Ved. Naturally, he wouldn't sacrifice them to drink the poison.
However, there were also some magical creatures in the wardrobe space that Ved had acquired for other reasons.
Ved turned over a large stone, and before him was a structure resembling a prison, surrounded by high walls, with the top enclosed by barbed wire and magical spells.
He opened the door, and the creatures inside rushed forward with a clatter, their eyes fixed on Ved as if they wanted to tear him to shreds and devour him.
They were a group of man-eating Acromantulas.
Their eight legs were covered in thick fur, and their massive pincers clicked excitedly. Their eight eyes glared at Ved, full of murderous intent.
These man-eating monsters were probably no bigger than basketballs when Ved first "picked them up," but they grew rapidly, and now each one was larger than an ordinary goat.
These creatures were also highly prolific, capable of producing a hundred eggs at a time. If not for the magic confining them to this small space, they would have long occupied the entire wardrobe room.
However, due to the limited space and finite food supply, the Acromantulas were forced to control their numbers, never exceeding fifty at the most.
Ved waved his wand, controlling the fastest-moving spiders, shrinking them, and bringing them out.
"Pff!"
A spider behind him suddenly spat a strand of sticky web at Ved, trying to hold him back.
An invisible armor materialized out of thin air, blocking the gooey web.
Immediately after, Ved shut the door, and the light of the spell flashed by.
A bird's chirp sounded from above, and Michal folded his wings, diving from the sky. He slipped through the narrow gap between the wires and landed on the attacking Acromantula.
Flames engulfed the spider, causing it to shriek pitifully. In the blink of an eye, it turned into a pile of black ashes.
Michal proudly tilted his head back, flapped his wings, and let out a challenging call to the spiders, several times his size.
The spiders scurried away, retreating to the corners.
Ved smiled, turned a stone into a box, and placed the petrified, shrunk spiders inside before leaving the wardrobe room.
"Professor." He opened the box and asked, "I suppose these could be used as well?"
The eight-eyed giant spiders were naturally magical creatures, ranked as a five-X danger level in the magical creature classification, alongside creatures like fire dragons and Dementors. They were far beyond the capabilities of a mere pig with a sixteenth of magical blood.
The liquid in the stone basin began to decrease at a visible rate.
The last spider, unable to withstand the power of the potion, fell to the ground, its eight legs twitching uncontrollably.
At the same time, the golden pendant box in the stone basin finally revealed its true form.
Ved returned the remaining Acromantulas to the wardrobe room and, upon exiting, saw that Dumbledore had already retrieved the pendant box and was examining it intently.
"Professor?"
"Ah, Ved," Dumbledore replied.
He set down the pendant box and said, "I'm afraid we've targeted the wrong object."
He turned over his palm to allow Ved to see the pendant box clearly.
"As far as I know, Voldemort did indeed have a golden pendant box, a Slytherin heirloom with a unique 'S' mark on it. But there's nothing on this one..."
"...one can't say there's nothing. It is the last trace left in this world by a brave man..."
Dumbledore opened the pendant box to reveal a piece of parchment folded inside.
Ved unfolded the note, revealing a message he was quite familiar with:
["To the Dark Lord,
By the time you read this, I will be dead,
but I want you to know it was I who discovered your secret.
I have stolen the real Horcrux and intend to destroy it as soon as I can.
I face death in the hope that when you meet your match,
you will be mortal once more.
R.A.B."]
"R.A.B.," Dumbledore said in a low voice. "Regulus Arcturus Black. He did not die at the hands of his master but gave his life to oppose Voldemort."
