Chapter 190: Entering the Tomb Passage

Immortality, whether for a Muggle or a Wizard, has always been a tantalizing goal that drives people to commit countless atrocities. Just think of Qin Shi Huang, or Voldemort, who fragmented his soul like a loaf of bread, losing all semblance of humanity. Countless heroes and villains have fallen to this temptation. The Sorcerer King in the Amazon Rainforest is just one of many.
While Liam was contemplating this, more information flooded his mind. Soul Communication was indeed a very effective method, bypassing the cumbersome language barrier.
It turned out that after these people died, the Sorcerer King did not let them rest. He attached their souls to creatures known as Soul Devouring Worms, forcing them to guard his tomb for eternity while continuously draining the soul energy they produced from their suffering.
Over a thousand years of torment, they gradually lost their sense of self. It was only when Liam used a Transcendence Spell infused with a large amount of Righteous Power that they regained their sanity. In gratitude, they were willing to share all their knowledge with Liam, on the condition that he help them pass through the magic-warded door they could no longer cross, so they could take their revenge on the Sorcerer King.
Liam pondered for a moment. This meant allowing the worms to revert to soul form and attach to his body, exposing his soul to them. If they had any ill intentions, Liam would be doomed.
The three leading souls, who had extensive life experience, immediately recognized Liam's concerns. They proposed swearing an oath, with death itself as their witness, to ensure they would not harm him during the process.
They quickly took the oath, and Liam felt that the level of the vow was even higher than an Unbreakable Vow. With this assurance, Liam relaxed and opened his Mind Sea to accept the souls.
Hermione watched anxiously as Liam sat motionless, only the gentle rise and fall of his chest reassuring her that he was still alive.
Suddenly, Liam stood up and stepped off the cloth on the ground, walking toward the crystal arch bridge at the edge of the platform. Hermione instinctively tried to grab him, but she was a split second too late and could only watch as Liam left the platform's protection and stepped onto the bridge.
"No!" Hermione screamed as she saw the black mist from the Blood Pool begin to glow with the ominous blue light of the Omen of Misfortune. The entire mass of black mist surged into Liam's body, and more black mist continued to rise from the Blood Pool, heading toward him.
Just as she was about to rush onto the bridge, a white cloth at the entrance shot out a beam of light, binding her in place. She could only watch helplessly as more and more black mist entered Liam's body.
Finally, all the black mist had been absorbed into Liam's body. After a moment of stiffness, he regained his mobility, moving his limbs and turning around.
Seeing Hermione still immobilized by the magic, Liam waved his hand to release her. He had been concerned that she might rush over in a panic, so he had prepared in advance, and his fears were realized.
As soon as the binding was released, Hermione rushed forward and hugged Liam, then quickly stepped back and asked, "Are you okay now?"
"I'm fine. I just negotiated with the souls in the black mist. We made a simple, mutually beneficial deal. Now we can cross the bridge." With that, Liam put away the white cloth, and the two of them, accompanied by the five mummies, crossed the crystal bridge.
Sure enough, the black mist no longer bothered them as they crossed the crystal bridge. Hermione, seeing this, obediently refrained from asking what had just happened.
Reaching the platform opposite the Blood Pool, the golden gate appeared before them. With the help of the souls in his mind, Liam recognized the patterns on the gate as their writing. The entire golden gate was inscribed with the titles of the Sorcerer King from long ago.
" quite the grand entrance", Liam remarked as he followed the souls' instructions and read the inscriptions on the gate. As the last syllable fell, the golden gate swung inward, revealing a sloping passage made of small square stones.
Liam, as usual, ordered a Mummy to scout ahead. The Mummy had barely stepped into the passage when it was completely destroyed by an unknown force. Liam didn't even know where the force had come from.
"This must be the Chamber of Life that the Sorcerer King set up back then", a voice in Liam's mind said. It was the elder soul that had been chosen as the representative.
"Although I don't understand magic, I was a scholar who participated in the construction of this Pyramid Temple. I was among the last to be killed, for a minor mistake. Now I realize the Sorcerer King probably killed us to keep the secret", the soul said with a bitter laugh, continuing, "But before I was killed, I had seen the design plans for this Temple. The area behind the golden gate is called the Chamber of Life, and no undead creature is allowed to enter. It seems the magic on the golden gate prevented us from entering back then, possibly to avoid the risk of us, after enduring torture, choosing to enter the gate for eternal peace. That way, no one would be left to guard the Sorcerer King's Blood Pool."
It looked like the Mummies couldn't be taken away. Once inside the Pyramid, the Multiverse General Store recognized the ongoing combat state, so Liam couldn't store them inside.
After dispatching the Mummies, Liam and Hermione stepped into the Tomb Passage. Liam then realized that the entire gate was made of gold, the first metal humans had learned to use, clearly showing the tomb owner's opulence.
The entire Tomb Passage emitted a faint white light, a stark contrast to the darkness and silence they had encountered earlier. It seemed the tomb's owner truly believed in immortality, as the passage leading to the tomb chamber was designed to resemble the world of the living.
Naturally, there were no traps along this Tomb Passage. On one hand, the tomb owner might have thought the Blood Pool and the Soul Devouring Worms were enough to deal with any intruders, and he lacked the resources to set up another equally formidable defense. For those who could survive the initial defense, setting up lesser traps afterward would be redundant.
On the other hand, he might have considered himself immortal, viewing the tomb as his home. Most people only set traps outside their homes, not inside the living room.
After confirming there were no traps, Liam and Hermione sat down in the center of the Tomb Passage to rest. Liam took a bottle of water from his bag and handed it to Hermione. They had been walking for over an hour, so a good rest before facing the next challenge was essential.
