Chapter 19: This is Supposed to be a Giant Lizard? Isn't This a Dragon?
Chapter 19: This is Supposed to be a Giant Lizard? Isn’t This a Dragon?
The two A-Rank quests that Yecheng accepted were to slay a certain venomous magical beast and to explore a recently discovered underground labyrinth.
The venomous magical beast was said to be a giant lizard, and the toxic gas it exhaled from its venom sacs had already caused significant harm to the surrounding villages, with multiple people falling ill due to the poison.
As for the underground labyrinth, it had been discovered not long ago. Based on the level of the monsters appearing within, the labyrinth itself wasn’t of a high level, but the final boss was an extremely troublesome magical beast.
Since the boss was only vulnerable to fire magic, the guild master, upon learning that Yecheng had the "Crimson Fire Cannon," assumed he was proficient in fire magic and thus entrusted him with the quest as well.
Whether it was slaying the venomous magical beast or exploring the underground labyrinth, neither task could be completed in a day. Given the distance alone, it would be impossible to make a round trip in one day.
Yecheng didn't want to eat flavorless roasted beast meat again, so he needed to stock up on necessary food and fresh water. In terms of equipment, although Yecheng didn't need any armor, he definitely needed a decent blade.
The bone knife Yecheng had previously used was made from the ribs of a slain magical beast. When he cleaved through the Crimson Fire Ball, the blade couldn't withstand his magical power and shattered into powder during the "God-Cleaving" attack.
With no money to his name, Yecheng couldn't afford a proper weapon, let alone food and water. In the end, he had no choice but to borrow money from Suya, thickening his face once more.
Since he was already eating soft meals, what difference did it make whether it was one bowl or two!
The long sword he bought from the weapon shop couldn't compare to his Zanpakutou, but it was far superior to the bone knife he had used before.
After purchasing the weapon and a large amount of food, Yecheng didn't rush to set off immediately. Instead, he first went to the house Suya had temporarily lent him.
He tidied up his room a bit, and only after closing the door did Yecheng finally prepare to depart.
Unfortunately, he didn't encounter the other powerful female tenant that Suya had mentioned. Otherwise, Yecheng wouldn’t have minded getting to know her. After all, they were living under the same roof, and if the girl needed help changing a lampshade or unclogging a drain, Yecheng would be more than happy to assist.
Five days later, on a vast grassland hundreds of kilometers south of the town, Yecheng, map in hand, finally arrived at the habitat of the venomous magical beast.
Over the past few days, Yecheng had first gone to the so-called underground labyrinth. It took him only a few hours to easily clear the labyrinth, which was supposedly only conquerable by A-Rank adventurers.
The boss guarding the bottom of the labyrinth was a massive ice python capable of releasing extremely cold breath.
When Yecheng arrived, he saw several adventurers frozen into ice statues, clearly the result of previous failed attempts to clear the labyrinth.
While the rewards for adventurers were substantial, and a lucky break could result in a big haul, it was a job that put one’s life on the line. One mistake could mean a trip to the afterlife, and these frozen adventurers were the best example.
Sensing the presence of an intruder, the ice python immediately let out a threatening hiss.
Magical beasts had far sharper instincts than humans. When the ice python, as the final boss, saw Yecheng, it immediately sensed that the human in front of it was not to be trifled with, far more formidable than the previous adventurers. Thus, it tried to scare Yecheng off with this display.
However, to his regret, Yecheng remained completely unfazed by the ice python's intimidation and slowly drew the longsword from his waist.
The anticipated intense battle did not occur, as the ice python's strength, in Yecheng's view, was at best comparable to a Menos Gigante in the Soul Society.
While its ice breath was somewhat impressive, it was not enough to withstand the bombardment of Yecheng's Kido techniques, "Crimson Fire Cannon" and "Blue Fire, Crash Down." Ultimately, the massive ice python met its end in less than a minute.
After collecting some rare materials from the ice python's body and finding the proof needed to demonstrate his successful conquest of the dungeon, Yecheng hurriedly set off for his next destination with his spoils.
After several days of travel, when Yecheng arrived at the current plain and found the so-called poison-type monster, he was utterly stunned.
Looking at the huge creature snoring at the entrance of a cave, Yecheng was speechless. Although he had only recently arrived in the Otherworld, he knew that the massive creature in front of him was definitely not the "giant lizard" described in the intelligence.
"This is a dragon from the Otherworld! No matter how you look at it, this thing has nothing to do with a lizard!
No, Western dragons do resemble large lizards, but who has ever seen a lizard with horns and wings!"
According to the information he obtained from the Adventurer's Guild, the poison-type monster he was supposed to slay was a large lizard-like monster about three meters in length.
Its ability was to release various types of poison mists, and its strength was at a level that A-Rank adventurers could handle.
But when Yecheng saw the real creature and compared it to the crude illustration on his mission brief, he finally understood what "the illustration is for reference only; the actual item may vary" truly meant! The creature described as being five meters long was now at least fifteen meters long in Yecheng's eyes!
Moreover, the so-called "lizard-like monster" now appeared to have a significant discrepancy. Even if it wasn't a pure dragon, it was at least a subspecies dragon.
Dragons, in any world, were apex predators, and the massive purple dragon in front of Yecheng certainly could not be an A-Rank existence!
"Damn it, either the intelligence is wrong, or I've been tricked!
A five-meter lizard, even if it was injected with growth hormones, couldn't possibly grow to this size in just a few days!"
When Yecheng said he had been tricked, he was not referring to being tricked by the Adventurer's Guild, but by the local villagers or lords who had posted the mission.
This was not a new occurrence. After all, the reward for slaying a five-meter, A-Rank lizard monster was vastly different from that for slaying a fifteen-meter-long, subspecies poison dragon!
Misreporting the mission's difficulty could significantly reduce the cost. If the adventurers who came to slay the monster succeeded, they would be making a huge profit.
If they failed, they could simply claim that their initial assessment was incorrect, that the monster was much stronger than they had thought, and then pay a bit more to ensure a higher success rate.
As for the adventurers who died, who would really care? After all, being an adventurer was a dangerous profession by nature.
Seeing the significant discrepancy between the actual situation and the intelligence, Yecheng, who was not used to being taken for a fool, turned around and prepared to leave.
However, just as he was about to leave, he noticed a beautiful elf maiden with long orange hair slowly approaching the poison dragon with a sword in hand...
