Chapter 19: Tallying the Harvest
Chapter 19: Tallying the Harvest
Upon returning to the Multiverse General Store, the System's voice echoed in Liam's mind.
— Introducing technology from other worlds to the Plants vs. Zombies World has led to unforeseeable evolutionary directions. Earned 3 Deviation Points.
How can it be so few? Liam furrowed his brow. This technological exchange could potentially alter the development of a Level 5 world, yet it only awarded 3 Deviation Points, which seemed rather meager.
Fortunately, as Liam's strength grew, the System provided more detailed information on the announcement board.
After reading through it, Liam realized that the current reward was just a provisional reward, reflecting the initial world shift caused by Dave, the Fate's Chosen, receiving the information, and that the next time he visited that world, the changes that occurred would be recalculated to determine the additional Deviation Points.
It turned out to be a long-term task, but a steady stream of rewards was a good approach. Liam now had 25 Deviation Points, and he could choose a world with potentially greater rewards for his next adventure.
Aside from the crucial Deviation Points, he also acquired a Greenhouse Farm, upgrading his planting base to a Small Plantation (Farm) + Micro Base (Yard). This allowed him to plant the new varieties of Plants without having to remove the existing ones to make space.
The two rows of Plants on the shelves behind the counter clearly demonstrated the harvest.
The lower row was densely packed, including the original Sunlight Sunflower, Peashooter, and Sun-shroom. In addition, there were seven new ordinary Plants:
Wall-nut, Repeater, Cherry Bomb, Grave Buster, Lantern Plant, Chomper, and Lily Pad.
Although they were all basic Plant varieties, they provided Liam with a versatile Plant army capable of handling most environments.
On the upper shelf, three pots of advanced Plants were placed: Fire Dragon Grass, Twin Sunflower, and Gatling Peashooter.
The ordinary Plants still produced ten per week, while the advanced varieties only produced two per week.
On the side cabinet, in addition to the original golden book, the Winter Home Industrial Manual, a new black book, Crazy Dave's Beginner's Guide to Plant Cultivation, had appeared.
Looking at the two books, Liam decided to learn from them. When he focused his mind on the books, he discovered that the cost to master them quickly differed.
Mastering the Winter Home Industrial Manual required 1 Deviation Point, as it was a regular mechanical book with just a hint of science fiction, making the learning cost minimal. On the other hand, Crazy Dave's Beginner's Guide to Plant Cultivation was a specialized guide for cultivating extraordinary Plants, and mastering it required 5 Deviation Points.
Liam thought for a moment and decided to study both books. Mechanical knowledge was useful in many situations, and the methods for cultivating extraordinary Plants, much like Herbology at Hogwarts, were directly linked to power.
Accumulating Deviation Points wasn't solely for the purpose of enhancing his power. If he hoarded Deviation Points and then suffered due to a lack of power, it would be a bitter regret. Therefore, the idea of only saving Deviation Points without spending them was the most foolish approach.
Liam sat down on the only chair in the shop and selected the Knowledge Infusion option, reducing his Deviation Points to 19.
At that moment, a beam of light appeared from each of the two books and connected to Liam's head. He heard a hypnotic melody echoing in his mind, and gradually, he drifted off to sleep.
In his dream, Liam found himself beside a lake. From the colorful clouds in the sky, two streams of water flowed into the lake, producing a pleasant tinkling sound.
Liam felt as if he were half-lying on the soft grass by the lake, gazing up at the sky, feeling an immense sense of relaxation.
One of the streams of water quickly ended, but the other took much longer to finish.
Just as everything finally calmed down, Liam felt a suction at the top of his head, and then everything went dark. He woke up to find himself still sitting in the chair.
"Why isn't there any needle-like pain like in the novels? Has the transfer not started yet?" He was a bit puzzled, but when he thought about it, he realized he had already memorized the knowledge from the two books. He just needed to practice to fully master it.
"Right, no one ever said that knowledge transfer must involve torture. I guess I was overthinking it. This is better; otherwise, each knowledge transfer would be as painful as being killed, and rolling around on the ground in agony would not be a good thing." After pondering this, Liam began to carefully review the knowledge in his mind.
The Winter Home Industrial Manual provided Liam with a wealth of mechanical knowledge, but since he had only ever fixed bicycles before, he couldn't immediately see how much he had improved in mechanics.
However, Crazy Dave's Beginner's Guide to Plant Cultivation was different. It not only taught him how to judge the condition of the Plants from Plants vs. Zombies and how to cultivate them, but it also complemented the Herbology knowledge he had learned at Hogwarts.
Liam was pleasantly surprised to find that his understanding of Herbology had become much more integrated, indicating that the book had been even more helpful than he had expected.
After roughly organizing the information transferred to his mind, he recalled the tension he had felt when the Zombies swarmed in. He thought to himself, "Indeed, effort and reward are proportional. This trip to the Plants vs. Zombies world, though risky, has yielded far more than my previous adventures in other worlds. Aside from the tangible rewards, the practical experience gained from using magic in battle is invaluable."
However, the crises he faced were largely anticipated, so the overall adventure was thrilling but not overly dangerous. Still, the near-miss with the Zombies hiding in the ground after repelling their attack taught Liam an important lesson: in any future actions, he needed to balance safety and expected gains, avoiding the pursuit of extreme rewards.
Finally, the gold he earned was equivalent to 1000 Galleons, which, while not an enormous amount, was still significant. Considering that Harry Potter had risked a 25% chance of death and spent an entire semester to earn the same amount in the Triwizard Tournament, Liam's gain was quite respectable.
After reflecting on the rewards of this adventure and finding nothing else to do, Liam stood up and looked around the shop with satisfaction. His gaze lingered on the first shelf, now filled with Plants, before he chose to return.
Back in bed, Liam noticed that only an hour had passed, which gave him a strange sense of time disorientation. After all, he had fought for an entire day in the Plants vs. Zombies world, and the first battle had kept him in a state of heightened excitement.
This made it difficult for Liam to fall asleep, but remembering that he had classes the next day, he forced himself to close his eyes.
After tossing and turning for what felt like ages, Liam finally drifted off into a drowsy sleep.
