Chapter 19: Energy Runes
Chapter 19: Energy Runes
After a few pleasantries, Koy spoke of his purpose.
Upon hearing this, Mu Zhuo smiled and said, "If the lord has given an order, how could I possibly ignore it? I've gathered quite a bit of what you need. Let me show you."
He then shouted across the tavern, "Ota, stop drinking and come over here quickly!"
Ota, the beastman, had just defeated his opponent and was basking in the cheers and praise of the crowd.
Hearing Mu Zhuo’s voice, he wiped his mouth and strode over.
Approaching, Ota's eyes lingered on Su Nan for a moment, his pupils narrowing slightly before he turned to Mu Zhuo and grinned, "Boss, what's up?"
"We have some work to do." Mu Zhuo pointed to the back yard and then smiled at Koy and Su Nan, "Please follow me, gentlemen."
In the back yard, the Firefox Guild's carriages and goods were guarded by over a dozen fully armed men.
From their uniform attire and weapons, it was clear they weren't mercenaries but private soldiers trained by the Firefox Guild.
Su Nan's eyes flickered.
Any guild with the means to train private soldiers was undoubtedly a large and powerful one.
It seemed the Firefox Guild had considerable resources.
Following Mu Zhuo's instructions, Ota carried a heavy wooden chest from one of the carriages and set it down with a thud.
Opening the chest, it revealed over a dozen thick books and five small boxes.
"These are the items the lord requested," Mu Zhuo said with a smile.
To his surprise, Koy merely nodded without any further action.
Su Nan, however, walked over to the chest and crouched down to inspect its contents.
There were fourteen books in total, four of which were duplicates of the ones Su Nan already possessed.
This was unavoidable, as ordinary people couldn’t read the texts in the wizard books and thus couldn’t make informed selections, leading to duplicates.
The remaining eight books also didn’t trigger any new skills.
But Su Nan wasn’t disappointed.
Even if they didn’t grant new abilities, new knowledge was always valuable.
For a wizard, knowledge was power.
And with his player status, he could fully grasp the contents of a book as soon as he completed 100% of its reading progress.
This gave him a significant advantage over other wizard apprentices.
One book, however, caught Su Nan's interest.
The Extraction and Transformation of the Green Chameleon’s Abilities!
From the preface, it seemed the book detailed how to extract the color-changing bloodline from a green chameleon and integrate it into a human body, granting them a ‘camouflage ability’ similar to a chameleon.
"An intriguing experiment," Su Nan mused, putting the book down and planning to read it more thoroughly later.
He then opened the five small wooden boxes one by one.
Three of the boxes contained parchment scrolls.
The moment Su Nan opened the boxes, he could sense the energy particles emanating from the scrolls.
Clearly, these were spell scrolls.
Each one contained a first-level spell: Freezing Ray, Fog Cloud, and Summon Monster I.
"Excellent finds!"
A hint of joy flashed in Su Nan’s eyes.
His current mental energy wasn’t sufficient to learn first-level spells, but using first-level spell scrolls was entirely feasible.
Spell scrolls required only a small amount of mental energy to activate, making them accessible to any wizard apprentice.
Of course, using a spell scroll of a level too high for one’s own capabilities could result in injury from the energy fluctuations.
But first-level spell scrolls posed no such risk.
These three spell scrolls could play a significant role in battle!
Feeling elated, Su Nan turned his attention to the remaining two wooden boxes.
Inside were more parchment scrolls, but they contained something other than spells.
To Su Nan's surprise, the first scroll contained a recipe for an Energetic Elixir.
"The essence of Mindtree sap, Ghostsnake bone powder, Thousand Souls grass, and Magic Sound flowers are all rare and precious materials," Su Nan thought to himself, his lips curling slightly.
In the current Starlight Continent, gathering these materials would be no easy feat. It would require a significant amount of manpower and resources. Even if he wanted to use the synthesis cube to create suitable substitutes, it would take multiple experiments to get it right.
In comparison, it would be easier to synthesize the Energetic Elixir using a lower-tier version.
The second scroll detailed a technique called Energy Runes.
Su Nan had some recollection of this technique. Energy Runes were a branch of enchanting, where the practitioner manipulated energy particles to form a rune with elemental properties, which could then be attached to oneself or an object to imbue it with the corresponding elemental effects.
For example, attaching a Lightning Rune to a weapon would grant it temporary lightning damage and paralysis effects. Attaching a Wind Rune to one's body would make it lighter, significantly enhancing agility and flexibility.
In short, Energy Runes were a technique that could temporarily turn ordinary items into magical ones or provide temporary buffs to oneself.
Since Energy Runes consumed very little mental energy, they were highly practical in combat, especially when paired with melee combat. Once mastered, they could significantly boost one's combat effectiveness.
"Essentially, it's an advanced technique for manipulating energy particles, requiring a high level of proficiency in energy particle control. That's why it's restricted to at least Third-Class Wizard Apprentices," Su Nan mused.
However, he remembered that in his previous life, a player had developed a special method that allowed First-Class and Second-Class Wizard Apprentices to use Energy Runes.
If he could use this method, he might be able to master Energy Runes ahead of schedule.
"I'll give it a try when I get back!"
With a plan in mind, Su Nan closed the wooden box and placed it back in the chest, then slowly stood up. By now, Mu Zhuo had realized that Su Nan was the one truly interested in these items, so he smiled and said, "I hope these items meet your expectations, Sir Su Nan."
"They are quite good," Su Nan replied, nodding slightly. Though his expression remained neutral, he was inwardly quite pleased. The Energy Runes alone made him feel like he had made a significant gain.
Koy, noticing his brother's satisfaction, called over two soldiers to carry the items back to the inner castle. He and Su Nan then bid farewell to Mu Zhuo and left.
As Koy and Su Nan walked away, Mu Zhuo's expression turned contemplative. Books and items related to wizards were excellent collectibles, and many nobles had a passion for collecting such items. However, from what he knew, Koy and his brother were not in the best of situations. They should not have the inclination to collect such items, especially since they were quite valuable—enough to buy several sets of armor for dozens of gold coins.
But if not for collecting, why would Su Nan be gathering these items?
After pondering for a while, Mu Zhuo shook his head, deciding not to dwell on it. He then turned to see Ota staring intently in the direction where Su Nan and Koy had left.
"What's the matter?" Mu Zhuo asked, puzzled.
Ota hesitated before speaking, "That noble, Su Nan, gives me a dangerous feeling!"
" Dangerous?"
Mu Zhuo's expression changed. Due to his Beastman bloodline, Ota had a keen, animal-like intuition that allowed him to sense whether someone posed a threat to him. As the head of his guards, Ota himself was a Mid-Class Knight. For him to feel a significant danger, the person would have to be at least a Peak-Class Knight.
Su Nan, though not particularly muscular, certainly did not look like a Peak-Class Knight!
Mu Zhuo's confusion only deepened.
