Chapter 19: Dog Training and Exotic Meat
Chapter 19: Dog Training and Exotic Meat
Early the next morning, the pages began their dog trainer training. The instructor was an old man with a goat beard, accompanied by a slender dog similar to the Whippet breed from his previous life.
Rayn was familiar with this breed; they had long limbs, a body shaped like a bow, and an incredibly fast and explosive speed. Even their heads seemed designed to reduce wind resistance, narrower and longer than most dogs, but with powerful jaw muscles and a strong bite force, making them excellent hunting dogs for the nobility.
However, the old man seemed disinterested in teaching the pages, his eyelids drooping as if he was just going through the motions.
"In a while, each of you will receive a three-month-old Whippet puppy," he said. "During the examination, if you can make your puppy squat, attack, stop, and retrieve on command, you will pass the test."
The old man didn't seem inclined to say much more to the pages. Instead, he directed them to the kennels in the western part of the outer courtyard to choose a puppy, and then let them play with the dogs on their own.
The pages were a bit dazed, but having a small puppy to play with made them quite happy.
During this time, Rayn paid close attention to Browbeard's expression.
As expected, this guy had something up his sleeve.
When he played with the puppy, he often seemed distracted, frequently glancing at Rayn with the corner of his eye.
His eyes held confusion, as if something that should have happened hadn't.
Rayn smiled inwardly, but said nothing!
That bastard Browbeard, it was definitely him! Just as Rayn confirmed that Browbeard was the employer, Browbeard quickly found an excuse for Drunkard Jack, claiming that Jack hadn't had the opportunity to take action against Rayn the previous day.
"Damn it, that unreliable Drunkard Jack! He's always dragging his feet! I'll have to go and urge him again this Sunday to get him to act quickly!"
Now that Rayn was certain it was Browbeard, he relaxed and played with the puppy.
Playing with the dog was fun, but after a whole day of playing, Rayn's strength hadn't improved!
Additionally, Rayn was expecting a dog trainer profession panel to appear, but it didn't!
This left Rayn puzzled. Could it be that there was no dog trainer profession? That shouldn't be the case!
Rayn was perplexed and couldn't figure it out.
In the evening, after the dog training session ended, a beautiful maid in a gray uniform approached Rayn and said, "Rayn, Lady Shadiya, the head maid, wants to see you. Please follow me."
The maid's appearance this time wasn't in the evening of Saturday, as it had been previously.
So, as soon as the maid and Rayn left, the other pages started gossiping.
"Damn, that Rayn, when did he get close to Lady Shadiya, the head maid? My family hasn't even managed to get close to her, and Rayn's just a tenant. It's impossible for him to have such connections!" Freckles shook his head in disbelief.
However, the previous scene made Browbeard feel a stronger sense of urgency.
Rayn's swordsmanship talent was becoming more and more impressive, and now he had connected with the head maid. Soon, the guard position might be within his grasp.
"Damn it!" Browbeard cursed under his breath.
Meanwhile, Rayn followed the beautiful maid through the twists and turns of the castle to the rear garden, but they only passed through it. The maid then led Rayn to a room on the first floor of the castle.
"Knock, knock, knock!"
The maid knocked respectfully and announced, "Lady Shadiya, Rayn is here."
"Come in," a voice replied.
Lady Shadiya, the forty-year-old head maid, opened the door and gestured for Rayn to enter. She closed the door behind him and stood respectfully to the side.
As Rayn stepped into the room, he first noticed a faint, exotic fragrance—not a perfume, but a scent that seemed to stimulate one's appetite. Then, Rayn quickly surveyed the room.
The room appeared to be a spacious study, furnished with a tea table, several lambskin chairs, and an antique rosewood desk. A mountain-shaped lantern on the desk held a candle that glowed warmly.
But as Rayn looked around the study, he noticed a door at the back that seemed to lead to another place.
Miss Kylie, the youngest daughter of the Earl, was writing diligently on a scroll with a quill pen.
"Rayn, there's some Mammoth Bear Meat prepared especially for you on the side table. Go ahead and eat it," said Miss Kylie without lifting her head.
Rayn was taken aback, and Lady Shadiya, the head maid, subtly gestured towards the side table.
Indeed, on the side table, there was a covered silver platter.
Rayn walked over and opened it, revealing a palm-sized piece of meat emitting a mouth-watering aroma. It was the source of the scent he had noticed upon entering.
Mammoth Bear Meat?
A particularly delicious type of bear meat?
The meat smelled incredibly enticing.
However, the portion seemed rather small.
Rayn didn't use the small knife beside him; he simply used a fork to pick up the meat and began devouring it.
Delicious and chewy!
In just a few bites, Rayn finished the Mammoth Bear Meat, still feeling unsatisfied. "Delicious! But there's not enough!"
At that moment, a slightly mischievous smile appeared on Lady Shadiya's face.
Suddenly, Rayn felt a warm sensation spreading from his stomach to the rest of his body.
Soon, an intense feeling of fullness emerged from his stomach, as if he had eaten ten packs of military-grade compressed biscuits from his past life.
Rayn felt like his stomach was about to burst!
Poisoned?
Impossible!
There was no need for that.
Just then, Miss Kylie's voice, crisp as a nightingale, rang out, "Rayn, do you feel a bit full? This is Mammoth Bear Meat, which is extremely rich in nutrition and energy. Given your constitution, this amount is already your limit."
"Oh, I see!" Rayn understood, no wonder they only gave him a palm-sized portion.
Miss Kylie stood up and handed the scroll to Rayn.
"Rayn, take a look at this first."
Rayn took the scroll and opened it. On the top, there were seven small figures in different poses, with the words "Mammoth Breath Technique" written beside them.
It was written in Common Tongue, which Rayn could understand. The Empire had done well in promoting basic literacy among the common folk.
Is this the Breath Technique?
Rayn felt like he had suddenly stumbled upon a windfall. He greedily devoured the content of the Breath Technique.
The figures were outlined simply with lines, but they vividly demonstrated the key points of each movement. The accompanying text described the breathing rhythm, resembling a high-difficulty yoga routine Rayn had learned about in his past life.

"Mammoth Breath Technique? I was wondering about that. How does Miss Kylie have such strength to wield a seventy to eighty-pound greatsword?" Rayn glanced at the well-endowed Miss Kylie, as if he had figured something out.
But Miss Kylie was perceptive, capturing every move Rayn made. At only seventeen years old, she had already reached the level of a Full Knight.
Noticing Rayn's glance, Miss Kylie blushed slightly but quickly regained her composure. "Don't jump to conclusions! I don't practice the Mammoth Breath Technique!"
"The Mammoth Breath Technique primarily develops one's constitution and strength. I think it suits your current situation."
Goddamn, it suits my current situation!
Rayn had his thoughts exposed by Miss Kylie, and his face turned slightly red. But as soon as Miss Kylie finished speaking, Rayn realized what she meant.
She was indirectly calling him a weakling!
