Chapter 189: Hidden Currents
Chapter 189: Hidden Currents
At the Wei Family Estate in the southern part of the city, the butler, still bearing scars on his face, walked down the corridor adorned with famous paintings, stepping on a thick carpet until he reached the door of a study.
A servant standing by the door pushed it open and said softly, "Mr. An, Master Wei is waiting for you."
Mr. An straightened his attire and cautiously entered the elaborately decorated study, bowing respectfully to the elderly man sitting there, reading a newspaper. "Master."
Wei Hang was nearly ninety years old, yet he was well-preserved, with a head of thick, neatly combed black hair, only slightly graying at the temples. His skin showed no signs of sagging, and his chin was adorned with a meticulously groomed short beard. He appeared lean and spirited, looking no more than fifty years old, thanks to the medications provided by Central City.
His face betrayed no emotion, giving no hint that he had just lost a younger son. He slowly put down the newspaper and looked up.
"You're back. Has Little Jun's body been returned?"
Mr. An lowered his head. "The Secret Sect Bureau says the cause of death is still under investigation and the body needs to be kept there for a while."
"I see." Wei Hang said slowly. "Then let's leave it there for a few days. Once this matter is resolved, they will return him to us intact."
Mr. An raised his head, looking somewhat uneasy. "Master, the Two-Faced Cult issue may be difficult to handle."
Wei Hang said slowly, "Yes, once you get involved, it's not easy to wash your hands of it."
The biggest problem in the old factory incident was the secret sect ritual.
The Dachen Republic government was highly sensitive to such rituals, so the Secret Sect Review Bureau had significant power and an independent budget. It also had little interaction with other departments, making it difficult to influence.
If this matter is confirmed and thoroughly investigated, there could be many complications. The upper echelons might even use this to break the long-standing status quo in Yangzhi City, dismantling the high dam they had built.
At this moment, a breeze blew in, and despite it being summer, he felt a chill. "Old An, is the window open too wide?"
Mr. An quickly responded, "Master, I'll close it right away."
"Ah, no need to rush. The room is stuffy; a bit of fresh air is good."
"Yes, Master."
Wei Hang said slowly, "Have you completed the investigation I asked you to do?"
Mr. An stepped forward, placing a file he had been carrying under his arm reverently on the desk. "Master, it's all here, but... we couldn't find any information about Chen Chuan's parents."
"Couldn't find it?"
"His father is not from Yangzhi City, and his mother left Yangzhi many years ago. She later entrusted her son to her sister, leaving a gap in the information."
"Hmm, if you can't find it, it doesn't matter. These details are not important." Wei Hang was not concerned with this; he just needed to ensure there was no significant background to Chen Chuan.
"However, we found something noteworthy." Mr. An approached and pulled out a document from the file, handing it to Wei Hang.
Wei Hang took it, put on a pair of glasses handed to him by Mr. An, and carefully read the content, his expression growing serious.
"The Meng family's young miss is close to Chen Chuan?"
"Yes, it's well-known in the school. The young miss hasn't denied it. She even wanted to take him with her to Central City, but he refused. Even so, she gave him a name card before leaving, which many people witnessed, confirming the information."
Wei Hang pondered for a moment and said slowly, "This student must die. Otherwise, we won't be able to stand our ground in Yangzhi, and the high dam will collapse."
He saw clearly that the key now lay with Chen Chuan. As the sole survivor of the old factory incident and a key witness, he had to be eliminated to control the narrative and prevent the Secret Sect Review Bureau from delving deeper.
He looked at the swaying branches outside. "If there are any issues with the Meng family, I will have the Mu Lan Corporation intervene. They won't make trouble over a dead man."
He glanced at the clock, noting it was five minutes to seven. He closed his eyes, leaning back in his chair as if resting, and Mr. An did not dare to disturb him, standing there with his hands hanging by his sides.
Five minutes later, just as the clock began to chime, a servant announced, "Master, the guest has arrived."
Wei Hang opened his eyes and said, "Old An, my legs aren't good. Please go and welcome him."
Mr. An responded, "Yes, Master," and turned to leave. A few moments later, a young man in a corporate uniform was brought in. Wei Hang took a cane and slowly stood up from his chair.
The young man approached and smiled. "Greetings, Mr. Wei. Manager Luo sends his regards."
Wei Hang said, "Thank you for the greetings. Please, have a seat."
The young man sat down, maintaining a smile. "Mr. Wei, Manager Luo expresses deep sympathy for your younger son and the other victims."
Wei Hang nodded slightly.
The young man continued, "Manager Luo has heard your partners' concerns and promises to help you through this difficult time."
Wei Hang's expression relaxed a bit, and he said politely, "Please thank Manager Luo on my behalf. We will cooperate with your company in the upcoming Government Hall meeting to achieve your company's objectives."
The young man smiled. "Mr. Wei, the company appreciates your efforts. Manager Luo said he will be present tomorrow. Yes, he is waiting for my report, so I must take my leave." He stood up.
Wei Hang also stood with his cane. "Please convey to Manager Luo that the Wei Family Corporation is always his friend and partner."
"Rest assured, I will. Mr. Wei, please stay."
"Old An, see him out."
The young man left the study, walked out of the estate, and approached a car parked outside. He opened the door, got in, and respectfully said to the figure in the back seat, "Manager, Wei Hang has agreed. They will cooperate with our company."
In the dimly lit room, a figure spoke, "The death of Wei Hang's son is indeed a blessing in disguise. The company's long-standing demands have been difficult to push through, but with this incident, they might finally be achieved."
The young man replied, "Once these two pieces of the puzzle are in place, the company's plan in Yangzhi will be complete."
"It's not that simple," the figure said. "With the Water Affairs, 'Canghong Tianqu' being a state-owned enterprise, it's not easy to tear open their defenses. We'll have to take it slow. However, with private security, we can use this opportunity to potentially push Wu Yi out of the picture." He gestured, "Let's go."
The car started, and they drove out of the Wei Estate at a steady pace.
Inside the Patrol Bureau Headquarters in Ding'an District, Chen Chuan sat in the middle of a spacious room, flipping through a book.
Technically, he was under the control of the Patrol Bureau, but in reality, he was under heavy protection. His meals were brought in by dedicated personnel, and the facilities here were even better than those in the school dormitory.
There was a knock on the door, and he looked up, saying, "Come in."
After the door opened, Gao Ming entered, surveying the room before approaching. With a smile, he said, "Looks like the conditions here are decent, but I doubt you'll be staying for long, brother."
Chen Chuan put the book aside and asked, "Any news?"
Gao Ming sat down opposite Chen Chuan and said, "Before I came, I learned that there will be an internal trial tomorrow, held under the name of the Government Hall, mainly to discuss how to convict you."
