Chapter 188: Can I Give It a Try?
Chapter 188: Can I Give It a Try?
Ivan put on a fierce look, but for a moment, he really didn’t know what to do with Malfoy.
Fortunately, Ivan quickly thought of a way to intimidate him and turned to Harry and the others who were watching the commotion.
"Where’s that photography enthusiast, Colin? Get him to take a few pictures of Malfoy and print them out for everyone."
"I saw that kid just now; he should be in the corridor over there. We can have Colin take a lot of pictures so everyone can have a good look", George, who was always eager to stir things up, found the idea amusing and went off with a mischievous grin to find Colin.
Malfoy finally panicked. He didn’t really believe Ivan would go through with it, but he didn’t want to take the risk of becoming a laughingstock in the school.
Malfoy’s face turned pale and red, and after a long while, he managed to force out a few words.
"I’m sorry."
After saying that, Malfoy’s face didn’t look good, and he seemed quite uncomfortable.
Ivan wasn’t entirely satisfied. Malfoy had clearly been trying to say the word "Mudblood" again.
"Forget it, Ivan. Let him down. If Professor Mcgonagall sees this, you’ll be in trouble too", Hermione, thinking it was enough, shook her head and said.
Ivan glanced at her and then nodded. With a wave of his wand, Malfoy fell from the air, landing with a mouthful of mud.
"George, come back, no need to go!" Ivan turned his head and saw that George was already halfway there, so he quickly called him back.
That little troublemaker, Colin, would spread the news to the entire school if he knew about it.
On the other side, the stubborn Wood loudly shouted at the group of Slytherins.
"Get out of here now! This is our Gryffindor turf today!"
Marcus’s face darkened, and he was about to call the Slytherin team to leave, but Malfoy, who had just climbed to his feet, said resentfully.
"Why should we leave? This isn’t your Gryffindor territory."
"What? You want to fight?" Ron, eager to teach Malfoy a lesson, drew his wand and said.
George and Fred also looked at the opposite side with a playful expression.
Marcus frowned, intending to stop Malfoy from speaking, but then he heard Malfoy say,
"This is a Quidditch field. Whoever loses has to leave. Dare you?" Malfoy couldn’t hold back his anger and shot a challenging glance at Ivan.
He knew there was a significant gap in strength between him and Ivan, so he had to make up for it on the Quidditch field.
The Slytherin team members were also somewhat tempted. They included several upperclassmen, and being collectively defeated by this young wizard, Ivan, was humiliating for them.
Marcus, who had initially planned to dissuade them, temporarily closed his mouth.
With their new brooms, the Slytherin team had almost no chance of losing, and they indeed had the right to train on the field. There was no need to back down.
"Ivan isn’t a member of our Gryffindor team", Wood stepped forward to explain and was about to refuse outright.
After all, seven Nimbus 2001 brooms would significantly boost the Slytherin team’s strength. Before they could develop a counter-strategy, Gryffindor’s chances of winning were slim.
Unfortunately, before Wood could speak, George loudly shouted,
"Let’s do it! Loser leaves!"
"Exactly, so what if it's a new broom? Quidditch isn't just about the broom’s speed!"
The fired-up little lions of Gryffindor were not about to back down. Especially after Ivan’s recent performance, which had thoroughly embarrassed the Slytherins, significantly boosting their confidence.
Wood sighed, saying nothing more.
He thought it might be a good idea to face the Slytherins early, even if they lost. It would give them a chance to understand the speed advantage of the Nimbus 2001, which would help them develop strategies for the official match.
At worst, they would just lose some face.
"Can I try out for the team?" Ivan suddenly turned to Wood and asked.
Wood was taken aback for a moment, then felt a bit hesitant. "Are you sure you want to join? You haven’t participated in any training sessions and haven’t practiced with the team."
"That’s fine. I’ve studied the rules of Quidditch, and during the flying lessons, Madam Hooch was very impressed with my flying talent", Ivan said confidently.
Hearing this, Wood felt a bit more confident in Ivan, thinking he might be another flying genius like Harry.
Moreover, Wood was already unsure of their chances of winning, so after some thought, he said to Ivan,
"Ask the others and see who’s willing to give up their position."
Ivan turned to look at the Gryffindor Team members, about to ask, when Fred threw his broom to him and grinned.
"What do you think of being a Beater?"
"Sounds good. I heard that Beaters can hit people?" Ivan caught the old Nimbus 5 and joked.
"If you aim well enough", Fred shrugged. Beaters couldn’t directly hit players, or else Quidditch would turn into a free-for-all.
However, a skilled Beater could use the Bludgers to knock opponents off their brooms.
But that wasn’t easy.
Bludgers not only moved on their own but were also very fast, often darting around the field, making them hard to hit. Additionally, key players on the opposing team were usually well-protected.
"Hals, I thought you were just going to sit and watch from the sidelines", Malfoy had been feeling sorry that Ivan wasn’t a player, but now that Ivan had volunteered, he was excited.
This meant he could thoroughly humiliate him during practice.
"You’re asking for it, and I can’t stop you", Ivan said nonchalantly, holding the Nimbus 5.
Malfoy was so angry he could barely speak, and the Slytherins were riled up, exchanging glances to form a consensus.
"Great, Ivan. You’re taking Fred’s place, so let’s work together to knock them all off their brooms!" George was delighted to see Ivan shut Malfoy and his friends up, and he patted Ivan on the shoulder.
The other Gryffindor Team members welcomed Ivan’s addition, and Fred had blind faith in him. He had never seen anything Ivan couldn’t do.
This was why Fred was willing to give up his position.
The only one who knew the truth, Harry, hesitated. He remembered that during the first flying lesson, Ivan had used his foot to hook the broom and had successfully fooled Madam Hooch.
So Harry was skeptical about whether letting Ivan play was a good idea.
