Chapter 187: The Distant Door
Chapter 187: The Distant Door
"She hid the memory she couldn't bear to recall but couldn't bring herself to let go of, along with the location of that door."
In the dimly lit manor, the warlock toyed with a glass vial glowing with a dull silver light, speaking with a tone of amusement and derision.
"Now, the memory of the door's location is completely gone from her mind. Even if you use Veritaserum or the Imperius Curse, she will only say, 'No, I don't know anything.'"
"She truly doesn't know. That woman, thinking herself so clever, even used a Memory Charm to erase the memory of hiding this memory."
"Only when she tries to recall her painful past will she rediscover that the Department of Mysteries has such a place."
The young man kneeling on the ground said with utmost reverence.
"Her supposed cleverness is as foolish as a wild boar in the presence of the master."
The warlock gently stroked the young man's hair, as if praising his own child.
"Thanks to you, you are far superior to those useless fools."
"Will you take action yourself, Master?" the young man asked, looking up with excitement.
The warlock placed the vial containing the memory back on the round table and picked up a golden pendant box with a green, S-shaped snake engraved in the center. His cold, venomous eyes became even more profound as he gazed at the pendant box.
"There are more important matters for me to attend to. I believe you can handle this for me." He murmured softly, then suddenly called out the name of his most loyal follower, "Bella."
From the shadows in the corner, the deranged witch bowed her head and responded to his summons.
"I entrust this task to you. I trust your abilities, and I greatly hope you will not let me down."
"I swear on my life, Master, I will retrieve the item from that room for you!"
"I don't want your life. If you encounter trouble, summon me. There must be no mistakes in this matter!"
"Amy feels certain she'll roll two sixes this time!"
"Really? It's a genuine feeling, not just self-deception?"
"Of course! Amy really feels it, not just deceiving herself!"
"Really?"
"Really!"
"Then go ahead and roll the dice."
The two dice fell from Amy's hand, rolled a few times on the carpet, and finally came to a stop. However, the numbers facing up were not two sixes, but a two and a three.
Seeing the result, Amy hung her head in disappointment.
"Alright, Amy admits it. Amy thought from the start that the roll would be low."
After the numbers were revealed, the cartoonish Amy with a large sun hat also moved forward reluctantly, her face full of sorrow, to the property Sherlock had already purchased.
"Ah ha! Pay up! You owe me 500 pounds in rent!"
Amy clutched the few remaining banknotes in her hand, reluctantly handing over a 500-pound note to Sherlock.
"Amy is almost bankrupt again."
"So Amy is a little fool."
"Amy is not a little fool."
Ever since he decided to leave the Department of Mysteries, Sherlock's daily life had become much more relaxed.
He would still complete the tasks assigned by Madame Selwyn, as he was still an employee of the Ministry of Magic and received a salary. However, he no longer needed to exhaust himself investigating other matters.
He had already searched every possible location in the Hall of Time and found nothing of value.
Before that, he had also probed Madame Selwyn about any research related to time acceleration in the Hall of Time, but the result was Madame Selwyn praising his idea and suggesting he explore it further, promising that once he made progress, the Hall of Time would have the relevant information.
Of course, this was before the incident in the Memory Hall, after which Madame Selwyn's attitude toward him became noticeably more distant.
Since the Department of Mysteries had nothing he was looking for, Sherlock had no intention of staying at the Ministry of Magic for long.
At the end of the month, he would resign and continue his search elsewhere.
He already had some ideas for his next destination.
Since the Straw Golem had escaped from the German Ministry of Magic, he could go to Germany and perhaps encounter the young Silke.
After winning the game of Monopoly by bankrupting Amy, Sherlock took her out of the Ministry of Magic and to a restaurant in London's city center.
Eddie was also available today, so they had arranged to have dinner together.
When Eddie arrived, Amy was already on her third glass of juice, having been kept waiting for half an hour.
"Sorry, sorry, some unexpected business came up at the department, and I had to delay a bit."
He sat down with a weary look, clearly having gotten little rest over the past few days.
Sherlock gave him a curious glance.
"Have the Death Eaters been up to anything recently?"
"No, ever since they broke into the Ministry of Magic and killed Algernon, they've all seemed to vanish. There hasn't been a single attack since then", Eddie shook his head.
"However, the Wizarding World has more than just the Death Eaters to deal with. Today, a wizard living in Oxford, Wizard Kent, was found to be illegally keeping hinkypunks, and in quite large numbers. When Kent was arrested, he released all the hinkypunks, and we have to catch every last one of those blasted creatures!"
"Shouldn't that be the responsibility of the Dangerous Creatures Committee?"
"The hinkypunks are classified as Xxxxx level, and three members of the committee have already been sent to St. Mungo's. The Ministry can only send Aurors to help with the situation."
Sherlock looked at him with a sympathetic expression.
"You're in for a busy time. Who knows where those hinkypunks might turn up."
Eddie also looked troubled as he replied.
"The worst part is we don't know how many there are. Even Kent himself doesn't remember how many hinkypunks he had, just that it was probably a few dozen."
"The incident in Sheffield has already upset the Muggle Prime Minister. If the hinkypunks cause any Muggle deaths, it could lead to serious problems between our worlds."
Sherlock could only express his sympathy; he couldn't help much with these troubles.
"There's something I've wanted to ask you for a while", Sherlock said, looking at Eddie. "Why are you so dedicated to being an Auror?"
"To the point where you don't even have time for your daughter and have completely given up your personal life. Does being an Auror mean that much to you?"
Eddie touched the teacup in front of him and fell silent for a moment after hearing Sherlock's question.
"Everyone needs a purpose."
He said softly.
"My parents were both wizards and Aurors. They instilled in me from a young age the idea of becoming a noble Auror, stopping those who prey on the weak, saving those who face injustice, and maintaining the order that needs to be maintained."
"I grew up hearing these words. My parents dedicated their entire lives to these three principles, and they both died in the line of duty as Aurors."
His expression wasn't heavy, as if he were talking about something trivial.
Eddie shrugged.
"So, I became an Auror and have been striving for these three goals ever since. My father always told me that to master powerful magic, one must have a clear purpose. A person's heart is the key to magic. So, from the moment I entered Hogwarts, I've been preparing for what I'm doing now, never daring to forget."
Sherlock glanced at Amy, who had just returned from the bathroom, humming an unknown tune.
"What about your family? Don't they need your care?"
Eddie stared silently at his teacup.
"You know, Amy was an accident. I never thought I'd become a father so early." His gaze seemed to drift into the past. "I've wronged two people in my life: Amy and Sophie. But Sophie has moved on from my shadow and will have a better life. As for Amy..."
He watched as Amy returned to her seat and naturally took back the pinwheel she had previously placed in Sherlock's pocket, then shook his head and smiled.
"Maybe I can entrust her to you?"
Sherlock patted Amy's head.
"You really are heartless, willing to hand over your daughter like that."
"Being involved with me would be the worst thing for her. There are very few Aurors in the Auror Office who have families."
Sherlock thought for a moment and decided to share his plans.
"I'm planning to resign from the Ministry of Magic, probably by the end of this month."
Eddie was taken aback, staring at Sherlock in surprise.
"You've only been there for two months!"
"The length of time doesn't matter. It's just that the things I originally planned to do are no longer possible."
After spending time together, Eddie had a good understanding of Sherlock's character. Once he made a decision, he rarely changed his mind.
"So, where will you go after leaving the Ministry?"
Sherlock thought for a moment before replying.
"I don't have any specific plans yet, but I might go to Germany for a while. I could take Amy with me."
His expression suddenly became serious.
"If you want to entrust Amy to my care, I won't refuse, but I can't guarantee anything."
Eddie frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Perhaps, and I mean perhaps, I might have to go on a long journey someday, and I won't be able to take anyone with me."
