Chapter 185: Fugitives in the Wilderness
Chapter 185: Fugitives in the Wilderness
In the forest, Lindsey and Red approached the source of the sounds they heard.
The two moved almost silently.
However, they noticed something moving in the forest, heading towards the spot where the birds had fallen.
After just over ten seconds, they reached a spot concealed by layers of lush green foliage. Lindsey and Red witnessed the source of the commotion.
Several Treants, their bodies composed of plant vines, were standing in the same spot.
They moved hurriedly, greedily devouring the fallen birds to replenish their severely depleted energy.
"Escaped Treants... Have these plants turned carnivorous?" Lindsey and Red exchanged a glance.
Lowering their voices, the girl spoke first, "Should we take them out?"
Lindsey immediately shook his head, "We need to stay calm and not act impulsively."
"This forest is vast, and it's rare to encounter magical beasts of this caliber in a month. Let's observe as much as possible..."
"Hmm?"
Before Lindsey could finish his sentence, new sounds came from the distance.
The two looked towards the eastern forest, where the sound of a massive creature crashing through the trees was heard, heading straight for the Treants.
Despite the dense trees obstructing their view, countless birds and beasts were startled, almost drawing a clear path, indicating the presence of a barbaric force charging through like a tank.
"..."
This unexpected turn of events brought about a significant change.
Lindsey and Red's expressions were subtle.
But they remained cautious, continuing to observe.
In contrast, the Treants below had fallen silent, frozen with fear.
They stood up, looking at the direction of the sound with terror, and then fled without a backward glance.
Only then did they start to desperately plead in Beast Language.
"It's over, he's catching up!"
"Don't give up, run! We can escape!"
"Why the forest?"
The Treants frantically fled westward.
Hidden in the shadows, Lindsey followed, realizing the harsh reality these Treants faced.
Their speed was no match for the pursuer.
As expected, they would be caught up with in half an hour!
"Red, we'll decide whether to intervene based on the situation." Lindsey instructed, and Red nodded slightly, then joined the pursuit.
...
A quarter of an hour later, the anticipated situation unfolded.
Four fleeing Treants, despite their best efforts to push their speed to the limit, couldn't escape the pursuer behind them.
In the shadows of the dense forest, a three-meter-tall Graybear emerged, accompanied by a ferocious roar.
By its bulky body, over a dozen gray Forest Wolves were present. Some guarded the Graybear, while others moved faster, blocking the path of these Treants and surrounding them.
At this critical moment, the Treants were forced to stand together.
Facing the threat of death, the thorns on their bodies began to grow rapidly, intertwining with each other to form a deep green barrier filled with spikes.
Desperate pleas echoed from within the barrier:
"We just want to leave the forest!"
"Graybear, let us go, it's better for everyone!"
"Roar—"
A deafening roar reverberated through the forest.
This massive creature had no intention of communicating with the fugitives.
It charged forward, its enormous paw covered in a dark gray glow. With a single swipe, it tore open a gap in the barrier.
"Traitors, there's only one way out—death!"
The trapped Treants had no escape, and death loomed before them.
The treants stared desperately at the descending bear claws.
Then...
A sharp crack echoed.
The giant bear, which had cornered the treants, suddenly collapsed to the ground!
"Ah?"
The treants within the thorn barrier were left bewildered.
It was only then that they realized, at some unknown moment, an arrow had pierced the bear's head!
And this arrow didn't just cause a regular wound.
Where the arrow struck the bear's head, it left a dent as if someone had smashed it with a giant hammer.
Ice, fire, and corrosive energy.
Three different types of energy simultaneously took effect, turning the bear's brain into a colorful mush!
"..."
"?"
Where did this attack come from?
When did the arrow pierce its target?
Had a fifth-stage forest bear died just like that?
Countless questions flooded the treants' minds. They couldn't comprehend what had just happened, but regardless, the reality was right before them—they were saved!
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Almost simultaneously, several more sounds of piercing the air rang out.
Through the gaps in the thorn barrier, the treants finally saw clearly.
Several flaming spears shot out from the forest shadows.
The forest gray wolves that had surrounded them just a moment ago were now impaled, one after another, following the bear's collapse. Each wound bore the terrifying signs of scorching!
"Awoo—"
The lead bear was instantly killed, and the rest of the pack followed suit.
The remaining gray wolves lost all will to fight and turned tail, fleeing back into the dense forest.
There was no trace of their previous ferocity during the hunt.
It was only when the situation developed to this point that the treants finally saw who had come to their rescue.
It was a creature that resembled an ape in build but had sparse body hair and walked upright on the ground.
"A human?"
The first to appear, Lindsey, didn't pay any attention to the treants.
He left only a brief instruction, "Red, keep an eye on them," before his figure disappeared into the forest shadows, chasing after the fleeing gray wolves.
A moment later, his voice drifted back:
"Our activities in the forest must remain confidential. I'll be back soon."
Snap!
The sound of a sharp object being pulled out of a corpse once again caught the treants' attention.
They turned towards the direction of the sound and made another startling discovery.
The red spear that had just killed the gray wolves was now nowhere to be seen! The only gray wolf with a spear still embedded in its body had its neck crushed under the foot of a human female, who then pulled out the crimson spear.
"Tsk—"
Red disdainfully kicked the gray wolf beneath her.
After confirming its demise, she circled around the treants and delivered a finishing blow to each of the fallen gray wolves.
Satisfied that all the gray wolves were thoroughly dead, she approached the treants without saying a word.
"Human!"
Witnessing this merciless scene, a treant spoke in trembling Beast Language:
"Thank you for saving us. I..."
"Hold your thanks for now!"
Red interrupted the treant's trembling gratitude.
The girl didn't even spare a glance at the treants; instead, she kicked the fallen bear's head, which lay on the ground.
A fifth-stage magical beast.
Faced with a silent attack, it was struck by an arrow to the head and died on the spot.
Red preferred to contemplate combat scenarios.
She propped her chin with one hand, her gaze lifting slightly, as she began to envision the evening's combat training.
"If Lindsey uses this move against me during tonight's training..."
"Can I dodge it?"
