Chapter 184: Daily Life
Chapter 184: Daily Life
Just as Lyon was perplexed, a slightly irritated voice came from the direction of the Happiness Apartments lobby.
Anna rushed out from the main entrance, grabbed Melanie by the back of her collar, and caught the mischievous little sister who was about to escape. With one hand on her hip, she tugged at Melanie's ear and scolded, "Don't talk nonsense! Miss Amy just moved next door, and she's only visiting a neighbor. How can you call her your sister-in-law?"
Amy?
Hearing Anna's reprimand, Lyon recalled the young mistress from the Charles Department Store. He had recommended that she move to Happiness Apartments, not knowing she was the daughter of the department store owner.
However, after she was kidnapped by the Marsani family, the move was put on hold. Lyon had rescued her from Rose Manor, assuming she wouldn't consider moving again, but surprisingly, she had moved to Happiness Apartments.
"Anna," Lyon cautiously approached the fence, keeping an eye on the stern old man. Unable to bear seeing Melanie's ears being pulled and her cries, he pleaded, "She's still young and probably doesn't understand the implications of her words. Just give her a little scolding to teach her not to speak carelessly. There's no need to be too harsh..." He sighed, "Look, her ears are turning red."
"Yes, Anna, let go. Melanie doesn't understand anything," William added, nodding his head seriously.
Seeing Lyon speak up, William chimed in, "She just told me that after big brother and Miss Amy get married, she wants me to go through the trash cans with her to see if we can find our nephew or niece. She doesn't even know where babies come from, so it's probably just something she said without thinking."
"..."
That made sense.
Compared to Lyon's futile persuasion, William's words were effective. Anna's anger subsided instantly, and she unconsciously released Melanie's ear.
"Let's forget about it this time."
After rubbing Melanie's slightly red ears, Anna looked at her dejected sister and crouched down, gently patting her back as she explained, "I don't want to control everything you do, but Miss Amy isn't married yet. If people who like to gossip overhear these words, it might cause trouble for her. So, you mustn't speak carelessly, understand?"
"Oh..."
Melanie reluctantly replied, "But Miss Amy is really suitable. Why can't she marry him?"
"Well..."
Hearing Melanie's question, Anna glanced at Lyon and then said, "Whether or not Miss Amy marries is up to her. It depends on what Miss Amy wants..."
"Then I'll go ask her! I'll see if she's willing to marry him!"
"Hey, wait!"
Anna grabbed Melanie's collar again, stopping her from rushing off to propose. She felt something was amiss and asked sternly, "What's wrong with you today? Why do you insist on calling Miss Amy your sister-in-law?"
"I..."
"Maybe it's because Miss Amy is very generous."
William, acting like a little adult, put his hands behind his back and confidently deduced, "The lady with the plump chest who left our house this morning is also very pretty, but she only gave each of us one piece of candy as a gift. On the other hand, Miss Amy, on her first visit, gave Melanie a new dress.
I guess she thinks that since big brother has to get married, it's better to marry Miss Amy, who is more generous, so she can also get more gifts."
"..."
"I! I didn't mean it like that!"
Hearing Anna's increasingly heavy breathing, Melanie, feeling betrayed, realized the gravity of the situation. She struggled and tried to explain, "He's lying! I have a better relationship with Miss Amy! It's not because of the gifts!"
"She's lying."
After receiving Leon and Anna’s inquiring gazes, William betrayed his sister without any qualms and directly explained:
"Just now, while digging for earthworms, she told me that Big Brother seems to prefer sisters with bigger chests. She’s worried that Miss Amy might not be able to compete, so she forced me to steal a bowl of the papaya soup that Anna drinks every day and send it over, to see if it could make her a bit fatter."
"..."
Upon hearing this, Leon and Anna couldn’t help but stiffen slightly, feeling a bit embarrassed while also exchanging a glance.
You actually drink papaya soup every day?
No wonder you chose Miss Veronica!
After exchanging a surprised and awkward look, the two adults didn’t say anything but instead simultaneously turned their gazes to Melanie.
"You! You’re making it up!"
Sensing a looming crisis from Big Brother and Anna’s silence, Melanie struggled to defend herself with all her might:
"I never said those things!"
"You did."
William said with a serious face:
"You also promised me that if the stolen papaya soup could help Miss Amy become our sister-in-law, you would let me play with your favorite doll for two days."
At this point, William paused slightly before evaluating with a look of disdain:
"How childish, I’m long past the age of liking dolls. How could such a condition move me? If you had offered me a tin frog, maybe I would have helped you."
"Well, why didn’t you tell me!"
Realizing there was no escape, Melanie gave up on denying it and glared at him with hatred:
"If you wanted to play with the tin frog, I could have borrowed it for you. Why did you betray me?"
"Would a borrowed one be as good as having my own?"
William asked seriously:
"Helping you steal Anna’s papaya soup would end up with me getting beaten, and even if it succeeded, I could only play with the tin frog for a few days. But if I report you, Anna won’t beat me, and she might even buy me a tin frog directly. What would you choose?"
"..."
"Rest assured, you won’t have suffered in vain. Once my tin frog is bought, I can let you play with it for two days as well."
...
"Knock knock knock"
After knocking on the door of the neighboring apartment, a doll-faced girl, who had lost to a tin frog, held a large bag full of items and smiled brightly at Leon.
"Mr. Leon, I’ve moved in to be your neighbor!"
"Welcome, welcome."
Although curious about her intentions, Leon, out of politeness, didn’t ask why she had come to Happiness Apartments. Instead, he invited her inside and then looked at the bag in her hands.
"These are..."
"Some little gifts!"
The doll-faced girl blinked her big, watery eyes, laid out the items in the bag, and displayed them with a smile:
"Don’t worry, they’re all very ordinary things. The most expensive is this coat suitable for winter... Mr. Leon! When you saved me last time, your coat was torn by the roses at Peonflower Manor. I’ll return it to you, okay?"
As for the rest, this is perfume for Anna, the scent is something I adjusted myself, so it didn’t cost much besides the materials. There are also a few small toys for William and Melanie… Oh, where are they? I heard them walking upstairs just now?"
Upon hearing Amy’s question, Leon’s expression couldn’t help but stiffen, glancing at the closed door of the inner room before explaining with a stiff smile:
"Um… they might be doing homework in the inner room? The school assigns a lot of homework these days… um…"
"I! I was wrong!"
A very familiar cry interrupted Leon’s stammering.
"Miss Amy’s chest isn’t small! Not at all! She really doesn’t need to drink papaya soup! Neither do you, Anna! Ow! Stop hitting me! Sniff sniff, I really know I was wrong!"
