Chapter 184: A Strange Trio
Chapter 184: A Strange Trio
Professor Quirrell's class on Dark Magic Defense remained as dreadful as ever, especially now that his injured arm required assistance, a task that fell upon the young wizard.
A lucky Gryffindor student near the podium was assigned this duty.
Kyle noticed that when he took the large lizard, his face turned pale, and he stood stiffly, afraid to move. As if he were holding a dangerous creature instead of a harmless little animal, akin to facing Professor Snape's Animagus form.
"I'm really sick of it..."
As Kyle left the classroom after class, he happened to overhear the student complaining to his friends.
"That lizard smells just like Professor Quirrell. I guess his diet consists solely of garlic... And now I bet I smell like it too! Ugh, I hope the Scouring Charm works, or I'll have to buy a new set of robes."
Kyle unconsciously took a sniff, and indeed, he had a hint of garlic on him, though not as strong as Professor Quirrell's. Since they had just come out of the Dark Magic Defense classroom, not many people noticed it.
No wonder he wanted to get a new set of robes; Kyle could empathize with him.
As a few students hurried past him, Kyle suddenly stopped when he reached the second floor.
He turned to the group beside him and asked, "I'm heading to the library. Would you like to come along?"
"No, no," Mick and Ryan shook their heads.
Kyle wasn't surprised. Aside from doing their homework, the library was a place they usually avoided.
"I won't go either," Connie hesitated and then shook her head. "I've been studying the notes Professor Snape gave me lately, and they need to be checked by Christmas. I don't have time to read any other books."
"Snape's notes?"
Kyle's eyes lit up. "Can I borrow them to take a look? Don't worry, I'll make a copy, so I won't waste your time."
Last year, he had received Professor Flitwick's notes on Charms, which not only included the professor's unique insights on charms but also many practical tips for casting them.
This extra knowledge, unavailable in textbooks, had benefited him immensely—the kind of invaluable knowledge that money couldn't buy.
"Well, of course, you can take a look if you want." Connie readily agreed. "You go to the library first, and I'll make a copy for you when I get back.
But... be careful when you read it. Don't let Professor Snape catch you; he told me not to share it with anyone else."
As she spoke, Connie's expression looked a bit strange.
In fact, when Snape gave her the notes, he specifically mentioned that she shouldn't share them with anyone else and even pointed out a certain person's name.
She just didn't dare to say it in front of that person.
"Don't worry, Professor Snape won't find out from me." Kyle assured her, patting his chest. "I'm the most tight-lipped person at Hogwarts."
"And..."
Connie continued, "My copying spell isn't as good as yours, so it'll probably only last about a week. You'd better read it quickly."
Kyle didn't mind this either.
With his quick-quill, he could easily transcribe it, and half a day would be more than enough, let alone a week.
After they decided, Connie and the others returned to the common room, while Kyle turned a corner and headed straight for the library.
There were quite a few young wizards and witches at Hogwarts who enjoyed reading. Even though class had just ended, the library was almost full.
Were they here to actually read books? Now, that was a rare occurrence.
Kyle didn't say much, merely greeting them briefly before heading towards Madam Pince.
"Harry..." As Kyle's back was turned, Ron whispered, "What do you say we ask Kyle if he knows who Nicolas Flamel is?"
"No way!" Hermione interjected before Harry could respond, "It's too dangerous. Don't forget, Snape tried to kill Harry last time. We can't involve Kyle in this."
"Yeah... Hermione's right," Harry nodded in agreement after a moment's hesitation.
He also felt it was better not to involve Kyle in this matter, and Ron's suggestion was merely a guess.
Just because Kyle was intelligent didn't mean he would necessarily know who Nicolas Flamel was.
Hermione was a prime example of that.
"Alright, I was just saying," Ron shrugged, "If you guys don't agree, then forget it."
As the trio discussed, Kyle had managed to borrow the book he wanted and was now leaving the library.
As he passed by, he noticed the three of them looking at him strangely, their smiles appearing forced and awkward.
Why would they be embarrassed to see him? Were they having some sort of mental breakdown? Confused, Kyle furrowed his brows and quickened his pace out of the library.
Although he didn't know what was going on, he decided it would be safer to keep his distance from them for now. Hermione was a perfect example of how spending too much time with them could make someone act strangely.
It was scary!
Back in the common room, Kyle found Connie and obtained Snape's notes. They weren't very thick, probably similar to the ones Professor Flitwick had given him, and they didn't seem to be complete.
"Just make sure Professor Snape doesn't find out, or he'll give me an earful," Connie reminded him.
"Don't worry," Kyle assured her as he took the notebook and found a quiet spot to sit down.
However, instead of immediately delving into the notes, he opened the book he had borrowed from the library.
"Legendary Alchemical Items"
The first page featured the self-stirring cauldron, which had been mentioned in last year's History of Magic class. Its invention significantly increased the success rate of potion-making and reduced potential accidents.
It was quite a remarkable invention.
The pages that followed described the flying broom, the Sneakoscope, and the Time-Turner, among other things.
However, Kyle wasn't interested in any of those, and he quickly flipped through the book until he found what he was looking for.
The Philosopher's Stone!
