Chapter 181: The Secret to Handling Might Guy and His Son
Chapter 181: The Secret to Handling Might Guy and His Son
"Haha, who wouldn't want to be promoted if given the chance? No one would choose to be a genin forever." Might Dai laughed, but a hint of melancholy lurked in his eyes.
If he had been content with remaining a genin, he wouldn't have spent a decade tirelessly practicing the Eight Gates.
It had been a grueling test of body and mind to focus solely on this single taijutsu for twenty years, neglecting all else.
In the end, though he had mastered the Eight Gates as he had wished, the time it had taken was too long. His lack of opportunities to showcase his abilities during that period had made him an outcast, with little chance to prove himself.
Forget about A-rank or B-rank missions; even D-rank missions were hard to come by for him.
D-rank missions were often subsidized by the village to nurture newly graduated ninjas; they weren't meant to be handouts for the incompetent.
However, Might Dai didn't see this experience as entirely negative. At the very least, it had tempered his mind, making him mentally resilient. The setbacks he had endured weren't for nothing; they had been trials for Might Guy, and he wouldn't let his son walk down the same path he had.
"With the current state of affairs in the ninja world, Cloud and Earth countries harboring ill intentions towards Fire, and Leaf lacking in military might, it's unreasonable for a taijutsu master like you, Dai-senpai, to remain a genin forever." Mu Yue said with a pained expression.
Setting aside the unique situation of special jonin, there were only three ninja ranks, and each promotion brought about a qualitative change.
Genin were limited to following orders on the battlefield; they were always the ones being commanded. Chunin, on the other hand, could lead teams on missions that weren't of utmost importance, while jonin were the primary fighting force during wars, typically serving as team leaders whenever they went on missions.
Mu Yue then proceeded to recount the unexpected battle they had encountered during their C-rank mission.
"If things continue like this, the ninja world will descend into greater chaos, and a major war may break out soon." Mu Yue sighed.
"Has the situation deteriorated that badly?" Might Dai's expression turned solemn.
As a genin who had been stagnant for so long, he rarely received any information related to wars; no one bothered to discuss such matters with him.
"Due to certain special circumstances, I have relatively easy access to the Third Hokage. If you're willing to demonstrate your Eight Gates technique, Dai-senpai, I'm confident that even if you don't become a jonin, getting promoted to chunin should be possible." Mu Yue nodded.
After becoming an intern teacher, he hadn't immediately resigned from his position as a private tutor, but he no longer went to teach on a fixed weekly schedule like before.
Might Dai was capable of opening six gates without sustaining much damage, which essentially placed him on par with an elite jonin. With such strength, especially during a time of war, Mu Yue was certain that Hiruzen Sarutobi would be enticed by such a formidable asset.
Hiruzen might hesitate to promote Might Dai directly to jonin due to his sparse resume and lack of notable achievements, but chunin was certainly within reach.
There were two ways to become a chunin: passing the chunin exams or making sufficient contributions through the completion of missions.
In Konoha, everything was mission-oriented. Mu Yue's teaching duties at the Ninja Academy were considered a mission, and various war-time operations also counted as missions.
It was out of the question to have Might Dai participate in the chunin exams, as Might Guy's birthday was just around the corner.
While Might Dai's mission record might not meet the requirements, his exceptional strength could make up for that shortfall.
Once he became a chunin, Might Dai would have opportunities to showcase his abilities, and with his prowess and accomplishments, advancing to special jonin status wouldn't be difficult.
As for becoming a full jonin, Mu Yue felt it might be a bit challenging. Konoha had stringent standards for jonin, and specialists like Might Dai, who excelled in a narrow field, rarely made the cut unless they had made significant contributions during times of war.
"Even with just six gates, your strength surpasses that of many jonin, Dai-senpai. You're more than qualified to be a chunin."
"What do you think of my proposal, Dai-senpai?" Mu Yue asked, looking at Might Dai's rugged face.
"Excellent! As expected of Teacher Mu Yue!" Might Dai enthusiastically nodded and gave Mu Yue a thumbs-up.
"Thank you so much!" Might Dai stood up and bowed deeply to express his gratitude.
The only thing he knew, the Eight Inner Gates, Mu Yue also mastered, and Mu Yue's strength was unfathomable. Without using ninjutsu, Mu Yue could surpass his six-gate strength by merely opening two gates, so he didn't need Might Dai's help.
However, Might Dai eventually agreed to Mu Yue's proposal, not because he wanted to prove his strength to others but for Might Guy.
He had come a long way in his training, and he knew that building a powerful body required money. Various supplements and cultivation elixirs were expensive, and the consequence of not having money was a lower ceiling and a body riddled with hidden injuries.
He had let go of opportunities in the past, but now that one was right in front of him, he knew he had to seize it or fail as a father.
While accepting Mu Yue's help made him feel guilty, not seizing this chance to make Might Guy's path smoother would make him feel even more so.
"You don't have to do this, Dai-senpai. I'm doing this for Konoha as well," Mu Yue said with a smile.
With Might Dai's agreement, things were set. Tomorrow, he would definitely give Might Guy a big surprise.
"I also have a secret body technique ninja elixir here that can eliminate hidden injuries. Consider it an early celebration for your promotion, Dai-senpai," Mu Yue said as he took out a pill from his ninja tool pouch and handed it to Might Dai.
Now that elixirs could be bought directly with money, they weren't as precious, but helping the current Might Dai was akin to helping Might Guy in the future.
"Eliminate hidden injuries? At my age, I don't need it. You should take it back or give it to Guy," Might Dai refused with a shake of his head.
He had accumulated a lifetime of hidden injuries over the decades, and one elixir wouldn't make a dent. He would rather give such a precious item to Might Guy.
"I've kept one for Guy, and this one is extra. Give it a try, Dai-senpai," Mu Yue insisted, placing the elixir in front of Might Dai.
Although Might Dai was reliable, Mu Yue wanted to make sure he saw him consume it. The pill was too effective, and if it fell into the wrong hands, it could cause trouble.
"After all, I'm not as skilled as you with the Eight Inner Gates, Dai-senpai. I'll need your guidance in this area going forward for Guy," Mu Yue played his trump card.
He had figured out how to handle Might Guy and his father—to get Guy to agree, he had to go through his father, and to get the father to agree, he had to appeal to his desire to help his son.
With Mu Yue laying it all out, Might Dai, who wasn't one to dither, popped the pill into his mouth.
Might Dai soon felt a warm sensation, which gradually spread until his entire body felt relaxed in a way he had never experienced before.
Might Dai knew he now owed Mu Yue another debt of gratitude. This was definitely not an ordinary elixir; its effects were too potent and immediate.
He felt that if he could take a few more of these elixirs, his stagnant progress might experience another boost.
"Try to stay at home tomorrow, Dai-senpai. The Third Hokage will likely want to see your abilities for himself. If needed, I'll send a shadow clone to find you," Mu Yue reminded him.
Might Dai nodded and gave a thumbs-up to indicate that there would be no problems.
"The tea's ready!" Might Guy ran over with tea for Mu Yue and Might Dai.
After drinking a cup, Mu Yue bid them farewell and left.
"He only stayed for a short while," Might Guy said, scratching his head as he watched Mu Yue's departing figure.
"Dad, what did Teacher Mu Yue want?" Might Guy asked curiously.
"Haha! It's something incredibly awesome and youthful. You'll definitely be shocked when it's done," Might Dai laughed heartily after finishing his tea.
Mu Yue had asked him not to tell Might Guy until they had results, as there was a chance it might not succeed, and he didn't want to disappoint his student.
"What's so mysterious?" Might Guy's curiosity grew.
